A river runs through it: intraspecific variability in hotter-drought-related physiological traits across the Mississippi divide in Pinus taeda L.

Human activities are intensifying heatwaves and droughts, threatening forest ecosystems worldwide. However, understanding intraspecific variation in physiological traits that confer resistance to hotter drought is critical for predicting tree responses to climate change. In Pinus taeda L., long-term geographic isolation across the Mississippi River Valley after the last glacial maximum has resulted in distinct population genetic structures, likely reflecting historical adaptation to contrasting climatic conditions in western and eastern refugia. However, it remains unclear whether contemporary

Strengthening nutrient resilience in rice (Oryza Sativa L.) under elevated CO2: insights into physiological, biochemical, and transcriptomic responses to biochar and CeO2 nanoparticles.

The rise in atmospheric CO2 concentration is linked to a decline in the nutritional quality of staple crops, posing a significant challenge for human nutrition and food security. Mitigating the detrimental effects of elevated CO2 on crops is a significant issue. Cerium oxide nanoparticles and biochar have garnered attention in agriculture for their potential in enhancing crop productivity and quality. In this study, foliar applications of CeO2-NPs (0, 50, and 100 mg L-1) and biochar-amended soil were used to examine their combined regulatory effects on physiological, biochemical, and nutrient

Combined Effects of Epi-Brassinolide Priming and the Foliar Application of Hydrogen Sulphide in Soybean Under Nickel Stress.

Experiments were conducted to investigate the effects of epi-brassinolide (0.01 μM EBL) priming and the foliar supplementation of hydrogen sulphide (50 μM HS) on nickel (Ni)-stressed soybean growth, photosynthesis, and tolerance mechanisms. Treatment of Ni (500 μM NiCl2) reduced growth parameters and the content of δ-amino levulinic acid (δ-ALA), total chlorophylls, and carotenoids. However, EBL priming and foliar HS application mitigated the decline significantly. Seed priming with EBL and HS supplementation alleviated the Ni-induced decline in nitrate reductase activity, photosynthesis, stom

Nitric oxide induces stomatal closure and enhances the adaptive plant responses against drought stress.

Nitric oxide (NO) is a very active molecule involved in many and diverse biological pathways where it has proved to be protective against damages provoked by oxidative stress conditions. In this work, we studied the effect of two NO donors, sodium nitroprusside (SNP) and S-nitroso-N-acetylpenicillamine SNP-treated on the response of wheat (Triticum aestivum) to water stress conditions. After 2 and 3 h of drought, detached wheat leaves pretreated with 150 microM SNP retained up to 15% more water than those pretreated with water or NO(2)(-)/NO(3)(-). The effect of SNP treatment on water retentio

Less water, same buds: moderate drought as a water-saving strategy for indoor cannabis.

Drought stress (DS) can restrict plant growth while potentially enhancing secondary metabolism through adaptive physiological responses. However, its effect on cannabinoid production remains uncertain, with previous studies reporting inconsistent findings. This study investigated how DS intensity and timing affect inflorescence biomass, cannabidiol (CBD) concentration, and CBD yield in two chemotype III (CBD-dominant; high-CBD, low-THC) medicinal cannabis genotypes differing in architecture and growth habit.: Two DS intensities were imposed during flowering relative to a well-watered control h

Co-application of potassium and thiourea for mitigating salinity stress in wheat seedlings.

Salt stress disrupts ionic homeostasis and induces oxidative damage, leading to reduced plant growth and development. Determining the lethal dose of NaCl is essential for developing effective mitigation strategies. Potassium and other antioxidant regulatory compounds often prove insufficient in addressing salt-induced toxicity, especially in wheat. This laboratory experiment aimed to determine NaCl concentration that reduces plant growth by 50% and to evaluate the effectiveness of different mitigation approaches involving potassium and thiourea supplementation at 0 mM, 10 mM, and 15 mM under t

Multidimensional role of selenium nanoparticles to promote growth and resilience dynamics of Phaseolus vulgaris against sodium fluoride stress.

High fluoride (F) concentrations negatively affect the seed germination, plant growth, development, and yield of crops. Phaseolus vulgaris L. is an F-sensitive crop frequently grown on marginal lands affected by F salts. Selenium (Se) is a vital elicitor of the antioxidative enzymes involved in scavenging free radicals to alleviate abiotic stress. Recent studies have demonstrated that engineered nanoparticles (NPs) have the potential to induce tolerance to abiotic stress in plants. Phytosynthesis of NPs is a novel and sustainable approach to mitigate abiotic stresses. The present study was int

CRISPR-Cas9-mediated mutagenesis of the SlSRM1-like gene leads to abnormal leaf development in tomatoes.

BACKGROUND: Leaves, which are the most important organs of plants, can not only fix carbon sources through photosynthesis, but also absorb nutrients through transpiration. Leaf development directly determines the growth, flowering and fruiting of plants. There are many factors that affect leaf development, such as the growth environment, gene expression, and hormone synthesis. In this study, tomatoes were used to study the role of the transcription factor Solanum lycopersicum salt-related MYB1-like (SlSRM1-like) in the development of tomato leaves. RESULTS: Loss-of-function of the SlSRM1-like

Mass balance studies of volatile chlorinated hydrocarbon phytoremediation.

In field-scale mass balance studies of poplar remediation of carbon tetrachloride (CT), more than 95% of the mass of CT was degraded with all of the CT chlorine accountable as chloride ion accumulation in the soil. Atmospheric loss of CT through leaf transpiration and trunk diffusion was insignificant. These findings are consistent with previously reported uptake and degradation of trichloroethylene (TCE) by poplar. Poplar phytoremediation of CT and TCE results in little decrease in aqueous concentration, since water is taken up at about the same rate as the chlorinated compounds. From this re

A Combined Phenotypic and Metabolomic Approach for Elucidating the Biostimulant Action of a Plant-Derived Protein Hydrolysate on Tomato Grown Under Limited Water Availability.

Plant-derived protein hydrolysates (PHs) are an important category of biostimulants able to increase plant growth and crop yield especially under environmental stress conditions. PHs can be applied as foliar spray or soil drench. Foliar spray is generally applied to achieve a relatively short-term response, whereas soil drench is used when a long-term effect is desired. The aim of the study was to elucidate the biostimulant action of PH application method (foliar spray or substrate drench) on morpho-physiological traits and metabolic profile of tomato grown under limited water availability. Functional relationship of AtABCG21 and AtABCG22 in stomatal regulation.

Stomatal regulation is important for water transpiration from plants. Stomatal opening and closing are controlled by many transporter proteins in guard cells. AtABCG22 is a member of the ATP-binding cassette (ABC) transporters and is a stomatal regulator; however, the function of AtABCG22 has not yet been determined fully, although a mutant phenotype included a significant effect on stomatal status. Here, we further investigated the function of the AtABCG22 gene and its functional relationships with other subfamily genes. Among close family members, we found a functional relationship of stomat

Short-term responses of Spinach (Spinacia oleracea L.) to the individual and combinatorial effects of Nitrogen, Phosphorus and Potassium and silicon in the soil contaminated by boron.

Источник пометил публикацию как отозванную

While of lesser prevalence than boron (B) deficient soils, B-rich soils are important to study as they can cause B toxicity in the field and subsequently decrease crop yields in different regions of the world. We have conducted the present study to examine the role of the individual or combined application of silicon (Si) and NPK fertilizer in B-stressed spinach plants (Spinacia oleracea L.). S. oleracea seedlings were subjected to different NPK fertilizers, namely, low NPK (30 kg ha-2) and normal NPK (60 kg ha-2)], which were also supplemented by Si (3 mmol L-1), for varying levels of B in th

Intraspecific variation in the water relations of Salix arctica, an arctic-alpine dwarf willow.

The seasonal and diurnal water relations were investigated within arctic and alpine populations of the dwarf willow Salix arctica. Marked differences that were habitat dependent (e.g. xeric vs. mesic) occured both within and between the populations. The environmental variables that most affected plant water balance and the bulk tissue water relations were soil water potential (Ψsoil) and the leafto-air water vapor pressure gradient (Δw), however, low soil temperature (<4.0° C) also had a marked effect in the wet to mesic habitats. The effects of declining Ψsoil and increased ‡w were most prono

Physiological and biochemical responses of two cultivars of wheat to elevated levels of CO2 and SO2, singly and in combination.

In view of the present increasing trends of anthropogenic emissions of carbon dioxide (CO2) and sulphur dioxide (SO2) throughout the world, the present study was aimed at investigating the long-term influence of elevated concentrations of CO2 and SO2, singly and in combination on the physiological and biochemical characteristics of two cultivars of wheat (Triticum aestivum L. cv. Malviya 234 and HP1209). For this purpose, the plants were grown in open top chambers under field conditions and were fumigated with 600 ppm CO2, 0.06 ppm SO2 and 600 ppm CO2 + 0.06 ppm SO2 separately for 8 h daily (0

Two New Novophytoptus Species (Acariformes, Eriophyoidea) from Chile and a Novel Hypothesis on the Functioning of the Eriophyoid Digestive System.

Endoparasitism is a highly specialized form of symbiosis, prominently manifested among phytophagous eriophyoid mites in the genus Novophytoptus Roivainen 1947. These mites have been traditionally thought to be restricted to the subepidermal lacunae of herbaceous monocots of the order Poales, which they penetrate to feed and reproduce. Based on surveys in Chile, two new species of Novophytoptus are described: N. cyperin. sp. from Cyperus eragrostis (Cyperaceae) and N. eryngiin. sp. from Eryngium paniculatum (Apiaceae), with the latter representing the first record of Novophytoptus from a eudico

Hydraulic Activation of Stomata Induced by Hygroscopic Fertilizer Salts Alters Crop Carbon-Water Exchange: Field Evidence From Cereal Crops.

Hydraulic activation of stomata (HAS), driven by hygroscopic salt films on leaf surfaces, can create an additional pathway for water loss beyond conventional stomatal vapour diffusion, yet this process remains largely overlooked in studies of plant-atmosphere interactions. We conducted the first field-based assessment of HAS-related responses following foliar interception of hygroscopic urea ammonium nitrate (UAN) fertilizer, using eddy covariance (EC) data from five cropland sites (2005-2021). During the 10-day period following UAN application, vegetation conductance (Gveg) increased signific

Plant-Inspired Aerogels with Vertically Aligned Channels for Synergistic Solar-Driven Interfacial Evaporation and Catalytic Degradation.

The synergistic coupling of solar-driven interfacial evaporation with photocatalysis has emerged as a promising strategy for simultaneously producing clean water and removing pollutants. However, their practical application is hindered by limited interfacial evaporation and photocatalysis efficiencies, as well as the complexity of real-world aqueous environments-particularly the coexistence of high salinity and organic pollutants. Herein, inspired by plant transpiration, a novel biomimetic carbon nanotube (CNT)/chitosan (CS) aerogel with a vertical channel structure was fabricated via directio…

Repeated colonisation of alpine habitats by Arabidopsis arenosa involved parallel adjustments of leaf cuticle traits.

Cuticle function can be pivotal to plant success in different environments. Yet, the occurrence of intraspecific adjustments in cuticle traits resulting from acclimation or adaptation to different habitats remains poorly understood. Here, we used genetically well-characterised populations of Arabidopsis arenosa to investigate whether cuticle traits were adjusted as part of the parallel evolution from a foothill to an alpine ecotype. Six alpine and six foothill populations, representing at least three independent evolutionary origins of an alpine ecotype, were used in reciprocal transplantation

Phytomonitoring of chlorinated ethenes in trees: a four-year study of seasonal chemodynamics in planta.

Long-term monitoring (LTM) of groundwater remedial projects is costly and time-consuming, particularly when using phytoremediation, a long-term remedial approach. The use of trees as sensors of groundwater contamination (i.e., phytoscreening) has been widely described, although the use of trees to provide long-term monitoring of such plumes (phytomonitoring) has been more limited due to unexplained variability of contaminant concentrations in trees. To assess this variability, we developed an in planta sampling method to obtain high-frequency measurements of chlorinated ethenes in oak (Quercus
