Female victims of domestic violence: which victims do police refer to crisis intervention?

Factors associated with activation of a volunteer-based crisis intervention services program for victims of police-reported intimate partner violence (IPV) were examined to determine if those for whom services were activated were representative of the overall eligible population. The study population comprised 2,092 adult female victims of male-perpetrated police-reported IPV. Crisis intervention services were requested by responding patrol officers in 415 (19.8%) of these incidents. Activation of crisis intervention services was more likely for victims who were married to their abusive partne…

Jacobson v Massachusetts at 100 years: police power and civil liberties in tension.

A century ago, the US Supreme Court in Jacobson v Massachusetts upheld the exercise of the police power to protect the public's health. Despite intervening scientific and legal advances, public health practitioners still struggle with Jacobson's basic tension between individual liberty and the common good. In affirming Massachusetts' compulsory vaccination law, the Court established a floor of constitutional protections that consists of 4 standards: necessity, reasonable means, proportionality, and harm avoidance. Under Jacobson, the courts are to support public health matters insofar as these…

Police-reported intimate partner violence during pregnancy and the risk of antenatal hospitalization.

OBJECTIVES: Intimate partner violence (IPV) is a significant public health problem and the abuse of women during pregnancy is of particular concern. Few studies have addressed the relationship between IPV and antenatal hospitalization. This study utilized a novel approach to examine the impact of IPV during pregnancy on antenatal hospitalization not associated with delivery. METHODS: This retrospective cohort study included Seattle women residents 16-49 years of age. Exposed subjects were women with a police-reported IPV incident during pregnancy in the years 1995 through 1998 and who subsequ…

Bicycle accidents and injuries: a pilot study comparing hospital- and police-reported data.

Bicycle accident and injury data collected by two different samples of North Carolina hospital emergency rooms during the summers of 1985 and 1986 are examined and compared with state police-reported bicycle accident data for the same time periods. Of the 649 emergency room treated bicyclists, 62% were children aged 5-14 and 70% were male. Nineteen percent of the riders suffered moderate or worse injuries (AIS greater than or equal to 2), and 6% were hospitalized. In contrast, less than half of the police-reported accidents involved riders under 15 years of age, 85% of the riders were male, an…

Deliberate hydrocarbon inhalation among low-socioeconomic adolescents not necessarily apprehended by the police.

Nearly 600 low socioeconomic adolescents were given a 17-item multiple choice questionnaire designed by the authors. Demographic data tended, in some respects, to be consistent with previous research. In other respects there were some differences, e.g., sniffing tends to also be a problem with females. The data suggested that there are differences between chronic and social sniffers and that these differences should be taken into account when designing treatment/prevention programs. Another suggestion is that sniffing tends to be a social activity that is engaged in because (1) it is readily a

Embedded military medical support in high-risk police operations: Analysis of 242 operations.

BACKGROUND: The National Gendarmerie Intervention Group (GIGN) is the French National Gendarmerie's tactical unit, operating in high-risk environments involving armed suspects, hostage situations, or counterterrorism. Since 1984, the GIGN has relied on an original medical support model integrating a military physician-nurse team within its tactical elements. The study aimed to describe this support within the specific context of a physician-led prehospital emergency medical system. METHODS: We conducted a retrospective, descriptive, observational study of all GIGN operations identified from a

Headlight glare in police-reported crash data: Prevalence, contributing factors, and potential effects.

INTRODUCTION: This study investigates the prevalence and contributing factors of headlight glare in police-reported crash data across 11 U.S. states from 2015 to 2024. The purpose was to evaluate the degree to which glare is reported as a contributing factor in nighttime crashes and to identify conditions and populations most commonly associated with glare. METHOD: Rates of reported glare in all crashes were calculated across sun-altitude categories. Glare in nighttime crashes was examined using crash data combined across multiple states, matched-pair comparisons within states, and narrative …

Supporting Police Well-Being Through an Adaptive Shift Management System: Co-Design Study.

BACKGROUND: Police personnel work under challenging conditions commonly associated with complex shift patterns, unpredictable last-minute changes, and high stress levels, with shift work identified as the major contributor to police personnel health and well-being challenges. These challenges negatively impact their mental well-being, physical health, and job performance, leading to potential health concerns such as fatigue, poor sleep, long-term physical disabilities, anxiety, and poor work-life balance. Existing digital interventions fail to address the needs of shift workers due to focusing…

The American Psychology-Law Society scientific review paper on police-induced confessions (2.0).

Law and Human Behavior's inaugural issue of 2025 begins with the publication of an official Scientific Review Paper (SRP) of the American Psychology-Law Society (AP-LS; Division 41 of the American Psychological Association). The article, "Police-Induced Confessions, 2.0: Risk Factors and Recommendations" (Kassin et al., 2025), was approved by a unanimous vote of the eligible AP-LS Executive Committee members in November 2024, and it represents the fourth such SRP that AP-LS has approved since it was founded in 1969-one on eyewitness identifications (Wells et al., 1998) and its update (Wells et…

Characteristics of domestic violence perpetrators with dementia from police records using text mining.

AIM: Few studies have examined the characteristics of domestic violence (DV) committed by people with dementia. We provide an overview of DV perpetrated by people with dementia in the community based on police reports of attendances at DV events. METHOD: A text mining method was used on 416,441 New South Wales (NSW) police narratives of DV events from January 2005 to December 2016 to extract information for Persons of Interest (POIs) with mentions of dementia. RESULTS: Events involving those with dementia accounted for a relatively low proportion of total DV events (<1%). Of the 260 DV event…

Officer gunpoint during police stops: Repercussions for youth mental health and perceived safety.

Youth-police contact is increasingly acknowledged as a stressor and a racialized adverse childhood experience that can undermine youths' mental health. The present study investigates a particularly distressing feature of youths' direct and witnessed in-person police stops-officer gunpoint (i.e., officers drawing of firearms and pointing them at youth, their peers, or other community members). We examine patterns of youths' officer gunpoint exposure and associations with youth mental health and safety perceptions. Data come from the Survey of Police-Adolescent Contact Experiences (SPACE), a cro…

Moral Injury, Moral Identity, and "Dirty Hands" in War Fighting and Police Work.

In this article, I undertake three main tasks. First, I argue that, contrary to the standard view, moral injury is not a species of PTSD (post-traumatic stress disorder) but rather, on the most coherent conception of moral injury, PTSD is (in effect) a species of moral injury. In doing so, I make use of the notion of caring deeply about something or someone worthy of being cared deeply about. Second, I consider so-called "dirty hands" actions in police work and in war, and distinguish these from the morally legitimate, but harmful, actions of police officers and of war fighters, such as the mo…
