Modeling Hepatitis C Elimination Among People Who Inject Drugs in New Hampshire.

IMPORTANCE: The success of direct-acting antiviral therapies for chronic hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection led the World Health Organization to set elimination targets by 2030. For the United States to achieve these benchmarks, public health responses must target high-risk populations, such as people who inject drugs (PWID), a group with high rates of HCV incidence and low rates of treatment uptake. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate potential improvements in the HCV care cascade among PWID, focusing on improved testing, treatment uptake, and access to harm reduction. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS:

Predicting outbreaks: a spatial risk assessment of West Nile virus in British Columbia.

BACKGROUND: West Nile virus (WNv) has recently emerged as a health threat to the North American population. After the initial disease outbreak in New York City in 1999, WNv has spread widely and quickly across North America to every contiguous American state and Canadian province, with the exceptions of British Columbia (BC), Prince Edward Island and Newfoundland. In this study we develop models of mosquito population dynamics for Culex tarsalis and C. pipiens, and create a spatial risk assessment of WNv prior to its arrival in BC by creating a raster-based mosquito abundance model using basic

A medical cost estimation with fuzzy neural network of acute hepatitis patients in emergency room.

Taiwan is an area where chronic hepatitis is endemic. Liver cancer is so common that it has been ranked first among cancer mortality rates since the early 1980s in Taiwan. Besides, liver cirrhosis and chronic liver diseases are the sixth or seventh in the causes of death. Therefore, as shown by the active research on hepatitis, it is not only a health threat, but also a huge medical cost for the government. The estimated total number of hepatitis B carriers in the general population aged more than 20 years old is 3,067,307. Thus, a case record review was conducted from all patients with diagno

Spatiotemporal epidemiology of hepatitis B in Central China: urbanization drivers and implications for adult-targeted control strategies.

BACKGROUND: Hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection remains a significant global public health challenge. Hubei Province, a historically high-prevalence area in central China, continues to face persistently high rates of adult HBsAg carriers despite effective reduction of childhood transmission through universal vaccination, hindering progress toward HBV elimination goals. This study aims to identify key drivers behind the rising hepatitis B incidence in the region, forecast future trends, and inform targeted control strategies. METHODS: This population-based spatiotemporal epidemiological study an

Burden of disease scenarios by state in the USA, 2022-50: a forecasting analysis for the Global Burden of Disease Study 2021.

BACKGROUND: The capacity to anticipate future health issues is important for both policy makers and practitioners in the USA, as such insights can facilitate effective planning, investment, and implementation strategies. Forecasting trends in disease and injury burden is not only crucial for policy makers but also garners substantial interest from the general populace and leads to a better-informed public. Through the integration of new data sources, the refinement of methodologies, and the inclusion of additional causes, we have improved our previous forecasting efforts within the scope of th

Trends and Disparities in Mortality from Hereditary Ataxia in United States, 2000-2020: A Retrospective Analysis with Projections to 2050.

Hereditary ataxias are rare cerebellar disorders. Population level mortality patterns in the United States in the previous decades remain insufficiently described. We quantified national mortality trends associated with hereditary ataxias and described stratified trends by sex, race, census region, and urbanization. We analyzed U.S. Multiple Cause of Death data from CDC WONDER for 2000 to 2020. Decedents were identified using ICD-10 code G11 for hereditary ataxias. Age-adjusted mortality rates (AAMRs) per 100,000 were computed using the 2000 U.S. standard population, with 95% confidence interv

Global, regional, and national burden of lower extremities peripheral artery disease from 1990 to 2021 and forecast for 2050: a cross-sectional analysis from the 2021 global burden of disease study.

BACKGROUND: Lower extremity peripheral artery disease (PAD) represents a critical global health challenge, with rising burden due to population aging and increasing prevalence of risk factors. While previous Global Burden of Disease (GBD) studies have documented PAD disparities across socioeconomic regions and countries, updated analyses incorporating recent epidemiological transitions and forecasting future trends remain limited. MATERIALS AND METHODS: In this study, all overall age-standardized rates (ASRs) specific to the 40+ age population. Using GBD 2021 data, we analyzed ASRs of PAD pre

Convergent impact of vaccination and antibiotic pressures on pneumococcal populations.

Streptococcus pneumoniae is a remarkably adaptable and successful human pathogen, playing dual roles of both asymptomatic carriage in the nasopharynx and invasive disease including pneumonia, bacteremia, and meningitis. Efficacious vaccines and effective antibiotic therapies are critical to mitigating morbidity and mortality. However, clinical interventions can be rapidly circumvented by the pneumococcus by its inherent proclivity for genetic exchange. This leads to an underappreciated interplay between vaccine and antibiotic pressures on pneumococcal populations. Circulating populations have

Prioritizing removals of a highly cryptic invasive species using machine learning and demographic weighting.

Invasive species present substantial challenges to biodiversity conservation, particularly when low detectability and demographic heterogeneity obscure the population-level consequences of management actions. Invasive Burmese pythons (Python bivittatus) in South Florida exemplify this challenge, as metrics based on raw removals or body size alone may not reflect demographic impacts. To address this, we introduce the Weighted Removal Index (WRI), a demographic weighting framework that prioritizes removals based on expected contributions to survival and reproduction. Using survey data from the S

External evaluation of tacrolimus population pharmacokinetic models in adult lung transplant patients: How to enhance the predictive ability of the model?

PURPOSE: Tacrolimus is the cornerstone of current immunosuppressive strategies after lung transplantation. However, its narrow therapeutic range and considerable pharmacokinetic variability pose challenges for individualized treatment. Several tacrolimus population pharmacokinetic (popPK) models have been developed for precision dosing in adult lung transplant patients. However, their applicability across different clinical settings remains uncertain. The aim of this study was to evaluate the external predictability of these models and identify influential factors. METHODS: Published models w

Forecasting deep learning-based risk assessment of vector-borne diseases using hybrid methodology.

BACKGROUND: Dengue fever is rapidly becoming Malaysia's most pressing health concern, as the reported cases have nearly doubled over the past decade. Without efficacious antiviral medications, vector control remains the primary strategy for battling dengue, while the recently introduced tetravalent immunization is being evaluated. The most significant and dangerous risk increasing recently is vector-borne illnesses. These illnesses induce significant human sickness and are transmitted by blood-feeding arthropods such as fleas, parasites, and mosquitos. A thorough grasp of various factors is ne
