BACKGROUND: Posterior capsular opacification (PCO) is a common long-term complication of cataract surgery. Intraocular lens design and material have been implicated in influencing the development of PCO. This study evaluated the association of hydrophobic and hydrophilic intraocular lenses on preventing PCO.
METHODS: Medline, Cochrane, EMBASE, and Google Scholar databases were searched until August 3, 2016, using the following search terms: cataract, posterior capsule opacification, and intraocular lens. Eligible studies included randomized controlled trials (RCTs), retrospective, and cohort

A case of Dupuytren's contracture is described, in which, both clinically and histologically, knuckle pad lesions involved the extensor tendons. Surgical excision of the Dupuytren's tissue from the dorsal aspect of the proximal interphalangeal joints, freeing of the lateral extensor slips and posterior capsulotomy resulted in marked functional improvement.

We describe the results and the complications encountered in 69 lensectomies performed via a limbal approach with the Ocutome vitrectomy instrument, in which it was the intention at surgery to maintain the integrity of the posterior capsule. After operation 87% improved in visual acuity, and 68% achieved 6/12 or better. The main early complications encountered were perioperative rupture of the posterior capsule and iris damage. The main late complications were postoperative thickening of the posterior capsule, retinal detachment, and bullous keratopathy. Of the eyes in which the posterior caps

An 84-year-old woman developed high intraocular pressure with a shallow anterior chamber 2 months after an extracapsular cataract extraction with posterior chamber lens implant. The condition did not respond to peripheral iridectomy and removal of the implant but was treated successfully with YAG laser capsulotomy and anterior hyaloidotomy.

OBJECTIVE: The objective of this study was to assess the rate of posterior capsule opacification (PCO), under "real-life" conditions, as measured by rates of Nd:YAG laser intervention, rather than from a controlled study from which patients with conditions predisposing to PCO have been excluded.
METHODS AND ANALYSIS: This was a retrospective, multicenter study in an unselected consecutive cohort of patients undergoing surgery for senile cataract. Patients aged 18 years and older, previously implanted with the CT LUCIA 611P IOL, were contacted at 12, 18 and 24 months to ascertain if they had r

Posterior capsule opacification (PCO) significantly hinders the accurate assessment of glaucomatous visual field (VF) impairment. While pattern deviation (PD) is theoretically intended to correct for generalized sensitivity loss, its accuracy in eyes with PCO remains unverified. This study evaluated 52 eyes of 46 patients with open-angle glaucoma and PCO. Following laser capsulotomy, visual acuity significantly improved from 0.22 to 0.10 logarithm of the minimum angle of resolution (P < 0.01), and mean total deviation (mTD) improved from - 8.89 dB to -6.46 dB (P < 0.01). This post-capsulotomy

To determine the effect of zonular forces on lens capsule topography, a finite element (FE) analyses of lens capsules with no lens stroma and constant and variable thickness with anterior capsulotomies of 1.5 mm-6.5 mm were evaluated when subjected to equatorial (Ez), anterior (Az) and posterior (Pz) zonular forces. The lens capsule was considered in the unaccommodated state when the total initial zonular force was 0.00075 N or 0.3 N. From the total 0.00075 N zonular force, the Ez force was increased in 0.000125 N steps for a maximum force of 0.03 N and simultaneously the Az plus Pz force was

Extracapsular extraction of infantile cataract often leads to the development of secondary cataract. The object of this paper is to describe conditions leading to secondary cataract. Between 1960 and 1976, 251 children up to 12 years of age with bilateral congenital cataract were treated and followed up. Surgery was performed on 305 eyes (171 children). The total number of surgical interventions amounted to 707. In 125 cases, the occurrence of secondary cataract necessitated a second operation. Only through the posterior capsulotomy we were able to provide permanently clear optic media. In 85%…

This study investigates the etiology and clinical features of delayed vitreous prolapse after cataract surgery and evaluates the long-term surgical and visual outcomes. Consecutive patients with vitreous prolapse into the anterior chamber occurring ≥ 3 months after cataract surgery at two hospitals between December 2006 and June 2020 were retrospectively reviewed. The primary outcome was associated ophthalmological events that triggered delayed vitreous prolapse. Secondary outcomes included long-term visual and subjective symptom changes after treatment. Among 20 eyes (20 patients), all had vi

A 70-year-old woman with senile cataract had femtosecond laser-assisted cataract surgery under local anesthesia in her left eye. Anterior capsulotomy and lens fragmentation were planned with the laser. After the laser was successfully docked, the anterior capsulotomy was performed without complications. During lens fragmentation, the patient moved abruptly. The suction ring lost adhesion, but the laser continued firing for a fraction of a second. Under the operating microscope, a grid pattern was visible in the peripheral cornea. An intraocular lens was implanted without complications. Six wee

A rare complication after extracapsular surgery of the cataract, blood effusion is often a fortuitous discovery when a drop in visual acuity occurs. The subject reported herein is a 76-Year-old patient who presented an endocapsular blood effusion with no liquid level 1 Year after the extracapsular surgery of the cataract, discovered while examining a decrease in visual acuity. Questioning led to the discovery of eye trauma due to Nd: YAG laser posterior capsulotomy 3 Months before, which had progressed spontaneously and favorably for 2 Months, with a reduction of the effusion and better visual…

We aimed to survey whether the timing of neodymium:yttrium-aluminum-garnet (Nd:YAG) laser capsulotomy would alter the corneal endothelial morphology and density. A retrospective cohort study was conducted, and 48 patients with unilateral posterior capsular opacity (PCO) and Nd:YAG laser capsulotomy performance were enrolled. The participants were divided into the early Nd:YAG group (timing ≤ 12 months, n = 20) and late Nd:YAG group (timing > 12 months, n= 28) depending on elapsed months between phacoemulsification and Nd:YAG laser capsulotomy. A diabetic woman had been suffering from progressively blurry vision in the right eye for 1 year after cataract surgery. Slit lamp examination revealed bilateral band keratopathy with quiescent anteriorchamber reaction, an intumescent cataract in the left eye, and dense posterior capsular opacity in the right eye. Capsulotomy was performed, but this led to neovascular glaucoma. Because of a refractory elevation in intraocular pressure, trabeculectomy with mitomycin C treatment, vitrectomy with panretinal photocoagulation, and intravitreal injection of bevacizumab were performed. A positive rap

Posterior capsular opacification (PCO) is a common complication following cataract surgery in the pediatric age group. Despite various techniques to prevent its occurrence, cases often require postoperative Nd:YAG laser capsulotomy. Cases with PCO are described in which the Nd:YAG laser was ineffective in clearing the visual axis and pars plana capsulovitrectomy was performed to penetrate the thick pupillary membranes.
