BACKGROUND: Commercially available edible mushroom polysaccharide (EMP) products often contain impurities such as maltodextrin, proteins and polyphenols, which interfere with accurate quality evaluation. We studied the outward currents elicited by an odorous compound, isoamyl acetate, in isolated olfactory receptor neurons of the grass frog under whole-cell perforated-patch voltage-clamp recording. Skin electrodes are the most convenient reference electrodes for clinical measurements of electrical potential differences (pd) across the epithelium of the alimentary tract but the presence of an electrical charge on normal skin introduces an error. Skin lesions were produced by application of 50% potassium iodide to twelve patients with dermatitis herpetiformis (DH). Perivascular cellular infiltrates were found to be characteristic of developing lesions. The cells were mainly round cells; alpha-naphthyl acetate esterase staining revealed that in 24-h lesions the mean percentage of T-lymphocytes was 43%, that of mononuclear phagocytes 6% and that of non-T/non-M cells (mainly B-lymphocytes) 44%. The potential of airborne bacteria as a sustainable alternative for agriculture was evaluated. Bacteria were isolated from air samples and evaluated for their plant growth-promoting (PGPB) and antifungal properties as biocontrol of phytopathogens.
