Time-resolved synchrotron X-ray absorption near edge structure (XANES) spectroscopy was used to study changes of chromium speciation in soils upon soil-water interaction. The time resolution was 30-45 min. In a flow-column apparatus operated near the synchrotron beamline, two different types of soil were treated with potassium-dichromate solution, and soil samples were taken and directly analysed by XANES. Fumes generated from mild steel and stainless steel welding were collected on paper filters and tested in the BHK and SHE cell transformation assays. Fumes from the manual metal arc welding of stainless steel (MMA/SS) had a toxic and transforming effect attributable to their Cr(VI) content. The administration of trivalent and hexavalent chromium compounds produced inhibition of the activity of succinic dehydrogenase, adenosine triphosphatase and acid phosphattase accompanied by cellular degeneration with complete absence of spermatocytes in the testis of rabbits. The biochemical and histological changes were more marked in the animals treated with the trivalent chromium than those exposed to hexavalent chromium and were progressive with the duration of exposure.

The effects of three organotin compounds-trimethyltin chloride, dimethyltin dichloride, and dibutyltin diacetate-and two heavy metals-cadmium and hexavalent chromium-on Artemia franciscana mortality are investigated in this study. We present a rare case of single pulmonary arteriovenous malformation (PAVM) with multiple metal allergies, including for platinum. A 47-year-old woman presented to our hospital without any symptoms. Enhanced computed tomography showed a single PAVM in S6 of the right lung. Interviews prompted us to suspect a history of palmoplantar pustulosis associated with metal dental filling.
