Porcine thyroid follicles were preincubated with 0-100 mM (0-0.58%) ethanol in the presence of 0-1280 microU/ml bovine TSH for 24 h; these follicles were then incubated with the mixture of Na125I and NaI to measure iodide uptake, iodine organification, and de novo thyroid hormone formation. We report an immunocompetent male child with chronic, indolent subcutaneous limb infection akin to basidiobolomycosis, but was shown by PCR method to be caused by a mucoralean fungus Saksenaea vasiformis. Treatment with oral potassium iodide solution was effective. This finding highlights the consideration of treatment decision according to the phenotypic severity as opposed to species identified.

A case of cutaneous, lymphatic Sporotrichosis, in a farm labourer, is presented. The diagnosis was established by isolating fungus from the lesion. Dimorphic nature of the fungus was established in vitro by demonstrating the mycelial phase at 25-30 degrees C and yeast phase at 37 degrees C. The patient responded well to oral administration of Potassium iodide.

A 41-year-old man developed classic lymphocutaneous sporotrichosis on the left arm; his 2-year-old son developed a single lesion of the "fixed" type on the right leg. Both patients responded rapidly to therapy with oral potassium iodide. Seven previous reports of familial sporotrichosis are listed, and therapy is reviewed briefly.

Basidiobolomycosis is an uncommon cutaneous zygomycete infection typically seen in immunocompetent individuals. Diagnosis can be made by biopsy and fungal culture of the lesion. Treatment with Potassium iodide and co-trimoxazole is simple and effective. Early and accurate diagnosis of basidiobolomycosis is essential to avoid dissemination and mortality. We present a case with basidiobolomycosis resembling Fournier's gangrene.

The authors report a case of subcutaneous mucormycosis in a diabetic patient with verrucous lesions in the fourth finger of the right hand. Initially diagnosed as a fixed cutaneous sporotrichosis case, success was obtained with the use of potassium iodide with healing of the lesion in a period of nearly 5 months. At present the patient remains under clinical observation with no treatment or relapse.
