From Psychologia Anthropologica to Psychotherapeutics: A Reconstruction of the Development of the Idea of Medical Psychology From the 16th to the 19th Century.

The article undertakes a historical analysis of the concepts of psychology, psychiatry and psychotherapy, assuming that, despite current institutional differences, they share a common interest in the soul or mind. The aim of this paper is to present an alternative path for the development of psychotherapy as a practical continuation of the concept of psychologia anthropologica introduced by Otto Casmann in the late 16th century. The text traces the conceptual evolution from the first appearances of the term Psychologia, Otto Casmann's two-volume treatise (Psychologia anthropologica, 1594, 1596

The impact of different forms of psychological abuse on battered women.

Battered women receiving either shelter (n = 30) or nonshelter services (n = 30) from a domestic violence agency were interviewed regarding psychological abuse and its aftermath. Four types of abuse were derived from factor analysis: ridiculing of traits, criticizing behavior, ignoring, and jealous control. Sheltered women experienced ridicule and jealous/control more often than nonsheltered women. For the entire sample, ridiculing of traits was rated as the most severe form. Ignoring was the strongest predictor of low self-esteem. Both psychological abuse and physical abuse contributed indepe

Rated casemix of general practitioner referrals to practice counsellors and clinical psychologists: a retrospective survey of a year's caseload.

Although evidence-based guidelines are beginning to be produced as to which psychological therapies might be appropriate for which patients, little is known about how general medical practitioners (GPs) in practice distribute referrals between different psychological therapy services. In a retrospective survey, 19 practice counsellors and 10 clinical psychologists from the same geographical area rated a year's caseload of GP referrals using identical data collection methods. Rated casemix was found to be broadly similar, although practice counsellors rated relationship and bereavement problems

Psychological Flexibility as Shared Process of Change in Acceptance and Commitment Therapy and Exposure and Response Prevention for Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder: A Single Case Design Study.

Changes in psychological flexibility were tracked in a combined protocol of exposure and response prevention (ERP) and acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT) for adults with OCD to assess if changes in psychological flexibility processes were unique to ACT intervention (e.g., not impacted by ERP). Using a nonconcurrent multiple baseline design, four participants received sessions of ERP and ACT while data was collected on psychological flexibility processes of change and OCD symptom severity. Results indicate treatment response for three of four participants based on OCD scores. Contrary to p

School psychology and institutional initiatives for school inclusion processes.

The aim of this article is to discuss inclusion from the perspective of critical school psychology, highlighting institutional initiatives to understand and construct a more plural, interdisciplinary and inclusive school environment. Initially, conceptions and concepts on the subject were reviewed in their historical and social processes, relating them to educational policies and to the possibilities for the school psychologist to act in order to raise awareness and to develop subjects in anti-capacity practices. Subsequently examples of the school psychologist's work are addressed as a feasib

From Evidence to Practice: Implementing the 2026 Canadian Clinical Practice Guideline Update on Vaccination-Related Distress in the Dutch National Immunization Program.

Vaccination-related distress (VRD) encompasses a range of stress reactions associated with vaccination, including pain, needle fear, and stress. VRD is a significant barrier to immunization, contributing to up to 8% of vaccination refusals in children and even higher rates in under-vaccinated populations. Beyond immediate discomfort, VRD can lead to long-term psychological and physical consequences, underscoring the need for effective VRD-mitigation strategies. The updated knowledge synthesis and clinical practice guideline by the HELPinKids&Adults team provides evidence-based recommendations

Frequent attenders in general practice: problem solving treatment provided by nurses [ISRCTN51021015].

BACKGROUND: There is a need for assistance from primary care mental health workers in general practice in the Netherlands. General practitioners (GPs) experience an overload of frequent attenders suffering from psychological problems. Problem Solving Treatment (PST) is a brief psychological treatment tailored for use in a primary care setting. PST is provided by nurses, and earlier research has shown that it is a treatment at least as effective as usual care. However, research outcomes are not totally satisfying. This protocol describes a randomized clinical trial on the effectiveness of PST p

Beyond ovarian Morphology: Integrative stress profiling for distinguishing polycystic ovary syndrome from functional hypothalamic amenorrhea.

INTRODUCTION: Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS) and Functional Hypothalamic Amenorrhea (FHA) are two prevalent causes of secondary oligo/amenorrhea (OA) in women. Women with polycystic ovarian morphology (PCOM) frequently exhibit features of both PCOS and FHA, creating diagnostic challenges in clinical practice. This exploratory study explores how psychological and metabolic stress markers, combined with hormonal profiling, can distinguish FHA-PCOM from PCOS-PCOM. METHODS: In this prospective observational exploratory study, ninety-one women with OA were recruited from the general population.

Health visiting as therapy: a phenomenological perspective.

In the course of their work British health visitors encounter many individuals and families with problems. Support is usually offered, but if that support is for psychological health needs, it is less likely to be accepted as legitimate health visiting practice. Where a referral is either not accepted, or placed on a waiting list, the health visitor will support the client through a holding relationship until the other appropriate professionals can accept the referral. From a literature review, helping styles and holding relationships provide a 'listening to' opportunity, a 'being there for' a

Job stressors and their impact on dental hygienists' job satisfaction and intention to leave practice.

BACKGROUND: Job stress and demand were known to contribute to physical and psychological distress, poor job satisfaction, and burnout among dental hygienists prior to the pandemic. Added stress from the COVID-19 pandemic likely influenced these factors. Little research has been conducted to examine the influence of these factors on dental hygienists. OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to characterize job stressors, physical distress factors, and psychological distress factors for dental hygienists working during the COVID-19 pandemic. It aimed to assess if these factors were directly as

Pre-field conceptualizations of psychological first aid among disaster and emergency management students: A reflexive thematic analysis.

Psychological First Aid is recognized as a fundamental early psychosocial intervention in disaster response. This study explored how undergraduate students enrolled in a Disaster and Emergency Management program conceptualize Psychological First Aid before field experience, focusing on their anticipated helping approaches, emotional and cognitive orientations, and emerging understandings of professional roles and identities. A qualitative study using reflexive thematic analysis was conducted. Data in the form of open-ended questionnaires were collected from 32 students. Following reflexive the

Mindfulness and life satisfaction in post-earthquake young adults: longitudinal mediation by psychological adjustment.

Large-scale traumatic events such as earthquakes have profound and long-lasting impacts on individuals' psychological well-being. However, the protective mechanisms that may foster adjustment and support life satisfaction in the aftermath of such disasters remain insufficiently explored. This longitudinal study examined the mediating role of psychological adjustment in the relationship between mindfulness and life satisfaction among young adult earthquake survivors. Data were collected through two web-based surveys conducted approximately six months apart. The final sample consisted of 277 Tur

Case Report: Family-mediated prognostic non-disclosure and psychological deterioration in terminal cancer.

Prognostic non-disclosure is a common practice in Indian palliative care, often driven by family members' intentions to protect patients from emotional distress. However, the psychological consequences of sustained non-disclosure remain insufficiently documented within psycho-oncology literature. This case report, structured according to the CARE guidelines, describes the psychological trajectory of a 34-year-old male police officer with metastatic gastric carcinoma whose terminal prognosis was withheld at his family's request. Initially, the patient remained hopeful following a total gastrect

Cognitively Based Compassion Training for HIV Immune Nonresponders-An Attention-Placebo Randomized Controlled Trial.

OBJECTIVE: Chronic inflammation is associated with increased morbidity and mortality for people with HIV (PWH). Psychological stress is an important contributor to this chronic inflammation. We hypothesized that a cognitively based compassion training (CBCT) approach could reduce inflammation and psychological stress in immune nonresponder PWH. DESIGN: An attention-placebo randomized controlled trial design to evaluate the acceptability of CBCT among PWH and its effects on key aspects of stress and immune function compared with an active-attention control group (NCT02395289). The future of psychological treatments: The Marburg Declaration.

Although psychological treatments are broadly recognized as evidence-based interventions for various mental disorders, challenges remain. For example, a substantial proportion of patients receiving such treatments do not fully recover, and many obstacles hinder the dissemination, implementation, and training of psychological treatments. These problems require those in our field to rethink some of our basic models of mental disorders and their treatments, and question how research and practice in clinical psychology should progress. To answer these questions, a group of experts of clinical psyc
