Forensic application of 3D scanning and printing technology is gaining momentum with 3D printed evidence starting to be produced for court. However, the processes for creating these forensic 3D models requires still rigorous assessment to ensure they adhere to the relevant legal standards. Although, previous work has examined the accuracy of 3D prints created from medical grade Computed Tomography (CT), no such assessment has been carried out for Micro Computed Tomography (micro-CT) which offers superior resolution and the ability to capture forensically relevant injuries. This study aimed to …

3D printing in adult cardiac and vascular surgery has been evaluated over the last 10 years, and all of the available literature reports benefits from the use of 3D models. In the present study, we analyzed the current applications of 3D printing for adult cardiovascular disease treated with surgical or catheter-based interventions, including the clinical medical simulation of physiological or pathology conducted with 3D printing in this field. A search of PubMed and MEDLINE databases were supplemented by searching through bibliographies of key articles. Thereafter, data on demographic, clinic…

In recent years, scaffolds produced in 3D printing technology have become more widespread tool due to providing more advantages than traditional methods in tissue engineering applications. In this research, it was aimed to produce patches for the treatment of tympanic membrane perforations which caused significant hearing loss by using 3D printing method. Polylactic acid(PLA) scaffolds with Chitosan(CS) and Sodium Alginate(SA) added in various ratios were prepared for artificial eardrum patches. Different amounts of chitosan and sodium alginate added to PLA increased the biocompatibility of th…

Despite great progresses in bioprinting materials and technologies, immense challenges still remain when printing tubular tissues or organs with satisfying mechanical and chemical properties, such as blood vessel, colon, and trachea. Herein, a promising extrusion system based on an interfacial diffusion printing (IDP) technique for one-step printing of tubular tissue grafts is proposed. Specifically, this technique offers great convenience to prepare hollow hydrogel fibers with excellent mechanical properties and satisfactory biocompatibility. The tubular diameter can be readily adjusted withi…

Three-dimensional (3D) printing elastomers, as a combination of transformative technology and widely used materials, have received great demand in many fields. However, commercial photocuring elastomer inks for 3D printing usually exhibit poor mechanical strength, inferior resilience, and lower elongation at break. In this study, photocuring inks that can be employed for digital light processing 3D printing are developed with acryloyl-modified polyethylene glycol (Acryl@PEG). The resultant photocuring inks exhibit not only high tensile strength of 14.1 MPa and elongation of 245.0%, but also ex…

OBJECTIVES: Currently, most of the artificial airway organs still require scaffolds; however, such scaffolds exhibit several limitations. Alternatively, the use of an autologous artificial trachea without foreign materials and immunosuppressants may solve these issues and constitute a preferred tool. The rationale of this study was to develop a new scaffold-free approach for an artificial trachea using bio-3D printing technology. Here, we assessed the circumferential tracheal replacement using scaffold-free trachea-like grafts generated from isolated cells in an inbred animal model.

A transfer printing (TP) method is presented for the micro-assembly of integrated photonic devices from suspended membrane components. Ultra thin membranes with thickness of 150nm are directly printed without the use of mechanical support and adhesion layers. By using a correlation alignment scheme vertical integration of single-mode silicon waveguides is achieved with an average placement accuracy of 100±70nm. Silicon (Si) μ-ring resonators are also fabricated and show controllable optical coupling by varying the lateral absolute position to an underlying Si bus waveguide.

With the advances in affordable three-dimensional (3D) printing technology, 3D reconstruction and patient-specific 3D printed models are establishing a crucial role in the field of medicine for both educational purposes and procedural planning. 3D printed models provide physicians with increased 3D perception and tactile feedback, and enable a team-based approach to operational planning. However, performing an effective 3D reconstruction requires an in-depth understanding of the software features to accurately segment and reconstruct the human anatomy of interest from preacquired image data fr…

Rotational angiography (RA) has proven to be an excellent method for evaluating congenital disease (CHD) in the cardiac cath lab, permitting acquisition of 3D datasets with superior spatial resolution. This technique has not been routinely implemented for 3D printing in CHD. We describe our case series of models printed from RA and validate our technique. All patients with models printed from RA were selected. RA acquisitions from a Toshiba Infinix-I system were postprocessed and printed with a Stratasys Eden 260. Two independent observers measured 5-10 points of interest on both the RA and th…

Hydrogels have good water retention, biocompatibility and biodegradability, so they are well used in the medical industry. Here, we have active polysaccharide exacted from Chinese traditional medicine and carboxymethyl chitosan cross-linked to form hydrogel and characterized them by Scanning electron microscopy, FTIR analysis, swelling, degradation, release and cytotoxicity tests. We printed the composite hydrogel into patches with three different shapes by Hot-Melt extruded 3D printer and studied the effects of different shapes on the release of drug. The results show, under acidic or alkalin

INTRODUCTION: Craniosynostosis is a rare condition and requires a personalised surgical approach, which is why we consider the use of 3D printed models beneficial in the surgical planning of this procedure.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: Acrylonitrile butadiene styrene plastic skull models were designed and printed from CT images of patients between 3 and 6 months of age with craniosynostosis of different sutures. The models were used to simulate surgical procedures.
RESULTS: Four models of four patients with craniosynostosis were produced: two with closure of the metopic suture and two with sagittal

OBJECTIVE: To report preoperative planning using 3D printing to plan thumb reconstructions with second toe transplant.
METHODS: Between December 2013 and October 2015, the thumbs of five patients with grade 3 thumb defects were reconstructed using a wrap-around flap and second toe transplant aided by 3D printing technology. CT scans of hands and feet were analyzed using Boholo surgical simulator software (www.boholo.com). This allowed for the creation of a mirror image of the healthy thumb using the uninjured thumb. Using 3D images of the reconstructed thumb, a model of the big toe and the se…

BACKGROUND: A comprehensive knowledge of mitral valve (MV) anatomy is crucial in the assessment of MV disease. While the use of three-dimensional (3D) modelling and printing in MV assessment has undergone early clinical evaluation, the precision and usefulness of this technology requires further investigation. This study aimed to assess and validate 3D modelling and printing technology to produce patient-specific 3D MV models.
METHODS: A prototype method for MV 3D modelling and printing was developed from computed tomography (CT) scans of a plastinated human heart. Mitral valve models were pr…

We used three-dimensional printing technology to create an anatomical three-dimensional model of a very rare and complex cyanotic CHD in a newborn, consisting of double-outlet left ventricle, ventricular septal defect, and pulmonary stenosis. This case demonstrates how this new innovative technology allows better understanding of the anatomy in complex CHDs and permits to better plan the surgical repair.
