We describe an elderly woman in whom keratoacanthoma developed from one nodule of prurigo nodularis that had been treated with cryotherapy for 3 months. Since in our case keratoacanthoma developed after treatment with liquid nitrogen for prurigo nodularis which had been constantly scratched in the past, we hypothesize that irritations of cryotherapy in addition to repeated mechanical traumas of scratching might have played a role in the formation of this tumor.

Study of 14 patients with prurigo nodularis revealed that clinically the lesions were multiple, verrucous, and discrete and were set in normal-appearing skin. Microscopically, the lesions showed a vascular acanthomatous mass. The dermal nerves showed a tendency toward hyperplasia in parallel with the epidermal and vascular changes, but no evidence of neuroma formation was seen. Prurigo pigmentosa (PP) is an uncommon inflammatory dermatosis first described in 1971. It is characterized by recurrent crops of pruritic erythematous papulovesicles that resolve with a macular reticulated hyperpigmentation. Mycosis fungoides (MF) is the most common type of cutaneous lymphoma and accounts for approximately 50% of all lymphomas arising primarily in the skin.
