Acute behavioral effects of exposure to some organic solvents -psychophysiological aspects.

Acute low-level exposure to organic solvent vapours may result in prenarcotic states of CNS-depression, often characterized by behavioral dysfunction. Behavioral findings from experimental acute human exposures to toluene, trichloroethylene (TCE), and methylene chloride (MC) are covered in this review. Perceptual measures (e.g. critical flicker fusion = CFF), measures of sustained attention (vigilance), measures of psychomotor performance (as e.g. reaction time, motor speed, coordination) as well as EEG-measures (sensory evoked potentials) are used to illustrate the main effects from such stud

Psychophysiological reactions to noise as modified by personal control over noise intensity.

Effects of personal control over noise intensity were studied in experimental situations where subjects performed mental arithmetic under noise exposure. Every other subject was offered a choice between noise intensities, and the next subject, serving as his yoked partner, had to submit to the same noise. Mean measures of catecholamine and cortisol excretion, and of heart rate and subjective effort and discomfort showed that subjects were more aroused in the yoked situation. There were, however, considerable interindividual differences, subjects classified as 'internals' or 'externals' on the

The influence of frontal alpha-asymmetry on the processing of approach- and withdrawal-related stimuli-A multichannel psychophysiology study.

The approach-withdrawal model of hemispheric activation suggests that left frontal cortical areas mediate approach, while right frontal cortical areas mediate withdrawal motivation. Within this framework, the present study investigates the association of frontal cortical asymmetry with attentional and emotional responses toward approach- and withdrawal-related emotional stimuli. Resting frontal asymmetry was measured from 43 students before they passively viewed negative, neutral, and positive emotional pictures. The startle reflex, skin conductance response, and subjective ratings of valence

Applied psychophysiology, clinical biofeedback, and rehabilitation neuropsychology: a case study--mild traumatic brain injury and post-traumatic stress disorder.

This article presents a case study of a 39-year-old European American married woman with a history of child and adolescent incest, marital rape, and physical abuse from her husband for more than 10 years. She was referred to a pain clinic for treatment of headaches and Tourette's syndrome. The client was evaluated with the Ackerman-Banks Neuropsychological Rehabilitation Battery to identify neuropsychological strengths and weaknesses. The Vulnerability to Stress Audit was used to identify life events that were positively and negatively influencing her life. The client was treated for mild traum

Accessing the Unspoken: A Systematic Review on the Use of Psychophysiology in Research on Persons With Severe or Profound Intellectual Disabilities.

BACKGROUND: Accessing the emotional experiences of individuals with severe or profound intellectual disabilities is difficult. Physiological measures offer a promising way to bypass communicative, cognitive, and motor limitations in this population. Yet this emerging field lacks a comprehensive overview of methods used, variables studied, and potential values and pitfalls. METHOD: A multidatabase systematic review (2008-2025), pre-registered in PROSPERO (ID: CRD42024629708), was conducted following JBI and PRISMA guidelines. From 5495 records, studies were screened at title, abstract, and ful

A holistic focus on the psychophysiology of reinvestment: A systematic review on reinvestment-related neural, cardiac vagal and oculomotor activity.

BACKGROUND: Reinvestment is a psychological phenomenon during which people consciously engage in controlling their movements (i.e., movement-specific reinvestment) or decision making (i.e., decision-specific reinvestment). This can result in performance deterioration and can have detrimental consequences for individuals in various sports. OBJECTIVES: This systematic review aimed to identify psychophysiological correlates of reinvestment to tackle the need for more objective measurements of reinvestment and to develop interventions to counteract performance-related decrements in the future. General Criminality as a Marker of Heterogeneity in Domestically Violent Men: Differences in Trauma History, Psychopathology, Neurocognitive Functioning, and Psychophysiology.

This study examined whether involvement in general criminal behavior was a useful marker of critical historic, psychological, and cognitive aspects of heterogeneity in domestically violent men. Two subgroups of domestically violent men, those with (n = 56) and without (n = 54) a history of criminal involvement, were compared with a group of nonviolent men (n = 82) on internalizing psychopathology, substance abuse, maltreatment in the family of origin, cognitive and executive functioning, and psychophysiological factors. Results found that domestically violent criminal men scored higher than th

Differing subjective and psychophysiological response patterns to a music-based auditory intervention for anxiety.

Anxiety comprises partially dissociable cognitive and somatic components, yet it remains unclear whether brief interventions modulate these systems in parallel. This randomized controlled trial examined subjective and psychophysiological responses to a brief music-based auditory intervention relative to an active auditory control (pink noise) in undergraduate students reporting recent generalized anxiety symptoms. Participants (N = 83) were randomized to the auditory intervention or pink noise. Cognitive and somatic anxiety were assessed before and after the intervention, while salivary cortis

The effect of positive emotions on psychophysiological recovery and performance in athletes - investigating the undoing-hypothesis.

Athletes have to cope with psychosocial and physiological stressors, requiring recovery to ensure subsequent performance. According to the undoing-hypothesis, positive emotions (PE) may enhance psychophysiological recovery. The present two studies investigated the undoing hypothesis and its benefits for athletes' cognitive (Study 1; n = 60) and motor (Study 2; n = 30) performance. After a combined psychosocial-physiological stressor, participants either completed a five-minute PE induction (music; imagination exercise) or were assigned to a resting condition. Emotions, perceived stress-recover

Effects of public space recreational service configurations on psychophysiological restoration: A virtual experiment.

Urban public spaces are increasingly recognized as important settings for psychophysiological restoration, which refers to recovery from stress as reflected in changes in psychological states and physiological responses. However, existing research has focused mainly on individual dimensions of recreational environment, recreational facilities, or management services, whereas multidimensional configurations of public space recreational service (PSRS) remain insufficiently examined. Using a typical community park recreational zone in Shanghai as the prototype, 28 PSRS configuration scenarios wer

Psychophysiological correlates of professional experience among female teachers of secondary schools in Kazakhstan.

Teaching is widely documented as one of the most psychologically and physiologically demanding knowledge-intensive occupations, with chronic exposure to combined intellectual, emotional, and regulatory workloads placing teachers at elevated risk for autonomic dysregulation, cardiovascular strain, cognitive decline, and occupational burnout. A question that occupational health research has not adequately resolved is whether the functional consequences of career-long teaching are driven primarily by biological ageing or by the accumulation of occupationally specific stressor exposure, two proces

Autonomic and psychophysiological effects of a 13-week mindfulness-based intervention in university students.

INTRODUCTION: Academic stress represents a multifactorial psychophysiological phenomenon that can disrupt emotional well-being and autonomic balance in university students. Mindfulness-based interventions (MBIs) have shown promise in enhancing emotional regulation and physiological balance. This study aimed to evaluate the autonomic and psychophysiological effects of a 13-week mindfulness-based intervention (MBI) in university students. METHODS: A quasi-experimental longitudinal study was conducted with 93 Colombian university students (86% female; mean age = 18.8 ± 2.35 years). Participants

A semi-randomised control trial assessing psychophysiological effects of breathwork and cold immersion.

The paradoxical nature of stress lies in its ability to both enhance and hinder psychological, physiological, and cognitive functioning. While chronic stress impairs functioning, acute stress can enhance resilience, cognition, and performance. We examined whether intentional short-term stress induced by cyclic hyperventilation and cold exposure (the Wim Hof Method (WHM)) improves psychophysiological and cognitive outcomes compared to an active control (mindfulness meditation). In this semi-randomised controlled trial, healthy adults (N = 404; 226 females, 177 males, 1 other; mean age = 37) com

Psychophysiological fidelity: A comparative study of stress responses to real and simulated clinical emergencies.

INTRODUCTION: Experiencing psychological stress may affect clinician performance in acute emergencies. While simulation is used extensively in healthcare education, it is unknown whether simulation effectively replicates the psychophysiological stress of real-world conditions. Thus, this study explored whether measurable differences exist in psychophysiological responses to acute stress in simulated compared with real-world clinical practice. METHODS: In this within-subjects observational study, stress appraisals, state anxiety and heart rate variability (HRV) were recorded during simulated a

Lifetime Stressor Exposure and Psychophysiological Reactivity and Habituation to Repeated Acute Social Stressors.

This study addressed whether lifetime stressor exposure was associated with psychophysiological reactivity and habituation to a novel laboratory-based stressor. Eighty-six participants (Mage = 23.31 years, SD = 4.94) reported their exposure to lifetime non-sport and sport-specific stressors before completing two consecutive trials of the Trier Social Stress Test, while cardiovascular (i.e., heart rate) and endocrine (i.e., salivary cortisol) data were recorded. Exposure to a moderate number of lifetime non-sport and sport-specific stressors was associated with adaptive cardiovascular reactivit
