Functional and psychosocial outcomes 1 year after mild stroke.

BACKGROUND: Mild stroke survivors are generally discharged from acute care within a few days of the stroke event, often without rehabilitation follow-up. We aimed to examine the recovery trajectory for male patients and their wife-caregivers during the 12 months postdischarge. METHODS: A descriptive study was undertaken to examine functional outcomes, quality of life (QOL), depression, caregiver strain, and marital function in a prospective cohort of male survivors of mild stroke and their wife-caregivers during the 12 months postdischarge. Data from each point in time were summarized and rep

Factors associated with functional psychosocial status in first-episode psychosis.

AIM: This study aimed to determine which of demographic/premorbid, psychiatric or neuropsychological variables are most closely associated w … s weakly related to functional status. CONCLUSIONS: Psychiatric factors were the main influence on psychosocial functioning in first-episode psychosis at baseline. Evidence suggests the relationships between symptoms, cognition and demographics with function might change over time, depending on the stage of illness being examined.

Neuropsychological function and psychosocial status of alcohol rehabilitation program residents.

This investigation examined the relationship between changes in psychosocial status and changes in neuropsychological function of clients undergoing treatment for substance use. A sample of 74 adults enrolled at a rehabilitation program for substance use were randomly assigned to two groups (one serving as a comparison group for practice effects). Participants were tested three times over 60 days on self-esteem, motivation, depression, and neuropsychological function. Consistent with other studies, participants demonstrated impaired baseline neuropsychological function that improved with alcoh

Clinical, functional, and psychosocial characteristics of an incontinent nursing home population.

Although urinary incontinence is recognized as a prevalent, disruptive, and costly problem among nursing home residents, the factors associated with this condition have not been carefully studied. We compared clinical, functional, and psychosocial characteristics of 50 incontinent and 50 continent nursing home residents. In spite of a selection bias due to the informed consent process that resulted in the exclusion of many of the most functionally impaired incontinent residents, the incontinent study participants had significantly greater impairments in functional abilities related to toiletin

Consequences of worksite hypertension screening. Differential changes in psychosocial function.

To evaluate reports of psychosocial dysfunction after worksite screening, a three-stage blood pressure screening was performed using standardized screening and labeling procedures. Of a heterogeneous group of 5,888 workers, 296 with sustained hypertension were identified and randomly assigned to traditional arousal or reassurance debriefings, matching each hypertensive subject with one to three normotensive control subjects on eight sociodemographic and occupational variables. Subjects exhibiting absenteeism increases or persistent hypertension six months after screening were randomly assigned

Effects of childhood maltreatment on emotional intelligence and psychosocial functioning in adult euthymic bipolar disorder patients compared with healthy controls.

BACKGROUND: Childhood maltreatment (CM) has been linked to poor emotional intelligence (EI) and psychosocial functioning (PSF) in patients with bipolar disorder (BD). However, no study has investigated whether EI mediates the relationship between CM and PSF in patients with BD. Here, we aimed to assess the association of CM with EI and PSF in euthymic patients with BD compared with healthy controls (HCs). METHODS: We assessed 124 euthymic participants with a BD diagnosis and 124 HCs by means of the Mayer-Salovey-Caruso Emotional Intelligence Test, the Functioning Assessment Short Test and the…

Psychosocial Functioning, Dietary Patterns and Socioeconomic Determinants of Quality of Life in Polish Women with Fibromyalgia: A Cross-Sectional Study.

BACKGROUND: Fibromyalgia is a chronic pain syndrome associated with impaired psychosocial functioning, reduced quality of life, and substantial socioeconomic burden. Although nutritional approaches to fibromyalgia management are increasingly investigated, the relationships between dietary patterns, socioeconomic determinants, and quality of life remain unclear. This study aimed to assess associations between fibromyalgia severity, psychosocial functioning, dietary patterns (DPs), socioeconomic factors, and self-rated quality of life among Polish women with fibromyalgia. METHODS: A cross-secti…

Latent class analysis in a transdiagnostic psychiatric population to identify classes of psychosocial functioning: Using data from routine clinical practice.

INTRODUCTION: Current diagnostic classifications in psychiatry show symptomatic overlap, and considerable symptom diversity in diagnosed individuals. Data-driven clustering techniques may help to clarify this complexity. In a psychiatric transdiagnostic population we aimed to 1) identify transdiagnostic latent classes of psychosocial functioning, and 2) examine whether the classes are differently associated with mental healthcare utilization and functioning at one year follow-up. METHODS: Routine healthcare records of 9062 patients (55.8 % female, mean age 38.4 years (sd = 13.4)) from four Du…

Psychosocial functioning and determinants of the health-related quality of life in children with neurofibromatosis type 1 and cognitive impairments.

PURPOSE: Neurofibromatosis type 1 (NF1) is an autosomal dominant genetic condition associated with cutaneous and neoplastic manifestations and other physical manifestations, as well as cognitive, psychosocial, and behavioural difficulties. NF1 negatively impacts the health-related quality of life (HRQoL) of children. There is limited evidence regarding the determinants of HRQoL of children with NF1. The aim of this study was to (i) compare the HRQoL of children with NF1 and cognitive impairments to published data of healthy children and children with cancer and (ii) identify specific determina

Effect of three group interventions on psychosocial functioning in adolescents exposed to interpersonal violence in Chile: A pilot clinical trial.

BACKGROUND: In Chile demand for specialist care following exposure to interpersonal violence (IPV) in youth far exceeds capacity. Group interventions may improve access to care for youth. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the effectiveness and acceptability of two low-intensity group interventions: Trama Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (TF-CBT); Interpersonal Psychotherapy (IPT); and treatment as usual, Art therapy-based support (ATBS). Outcomes measured were post-traumatic stress symptoms, depression, interpersonal functioning and affect regulation. PARTICIPANTS AND SETTING: Participants were 67

Anhedonia predicts poor psychosocial functioning: Results from a large cohort of patients treated for major depressive disorder by general practitioners.

BACKGROUND: Anhedonia is a core symptom of major depression and a key prognostic factor that is often poorly explored in clinical trials of major depressive disorder (MDD). Beyond symptomatic remission, psychosocial functioning also reveals difficulty in achieving remission in patients with MDD. The main objective of this study was to explore the interrelationships between social functioning and anhedonia on a longitudinal basis. METHODS: In total, 1570 outpatients treated for MDD with agomelatine were included. Severity of depression and levels of anhedonia and of psychosocial functioning we…
