This experimental study examined effectiveness of two group therapy models on chemically dependent women's perceptions of self-efficacy and personal control. Participants were randomly assigned to two therapeutic approaches (experiential or cognitive) or the control group. OBJECTIVE: The authors compared psychoanalytic psychotherapy and cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) in the treatment of bulimia nervosa.
METHOD: A randomized controlled trial was conducted in which 70 patients with bulimia nervosa received either 2 years of weekly psychoanalytic psychotherapy or 20 sessions of CBT over 5 months. The main outcome measure was the Eating Disorder Examination interview, which was administered blind to treatment condition at baseline, after 5 months, and after 2 years. Twenty-one adolescents had therapy in a group containing three volunteer adolescents over a period of ten months. Fifteen adolescents came to five sessions or more. A description of the group shows how many of the group members model their behavior and attitudes on those of the volunteers. It is suggested that using volunteers is a useful method of initiating and maintaining a group of adolescents.

BACKGROUND: Non-didactically delivered curriculum based group psychoeducation has been shown to be more effective than both group support in a specialist mood disorder centre in Spain (with effects lasting up to five years), and treatment as usual in Australia. It is unclear whether the specific content and form of group psychoeducation is effective or the chance to meet and work collaboratively with other peers. The main objective of this trial is to determine whether curriculum based group psychoeducation is more clinically and cost effective than unstructured peer group support.

In 30 preschool children the efficacy of various psychotherapeutic methods in the treatment of spasmophemia was estimated. The effect of group psychotherapy, play therapy and age-modified variants of autogenous training is described. Importance of family psychotherapy is determined, and attempts at specifying the most typical pathological family situations are made. It is noted that the psychotherapy plays an important role in the treatment of spasmophemia at the preschool age, and contributes to a stable social adaptation of the child.
