Factors influencing the adoption of a healthy eating campaign by federal cross-sector partners: a qualitative study.

BACKGROUND: The Eat Well Campaign (EWC) was a social marketing campaign developed by Health Canada and disseminated to the public with the help of cross-sector partners. The purpose of this study was to describe factors that influenced cross-sector partners' decision to adopt the EWC. METHODS: Thematic content analysis, based primarily on an a priori codebook of constructs from Roger's diffusion of innovations decision process model, was conducted on hour-long semi-structured telephone interviews with Health Canada's cross-sector partners (n = 18). RESULTS: Dominant themes influencing cross-

Regression of Hard-Won Advances in Socialized Medicine: The Emergence of the Private Sector in Health Care in Serbia.

Dual practice physicians are those who work in both the public and private sectors: for example, in the morning seeing patients in a state-r … opulation. All of this contributes to rising health care costs, poorer care in both the private and public sectors, overworked physicians, and the shortsighted complicity of the guilds. This is an attack on the right to health: the poor will often get insufficient care, while the patients who are financially better off are at risk of overtreatment and overdiagn …

Leveraging the private sector for health system development in sub-Saharan Africa.

Development assistance has historically supported major gains in health and health-system development in sub-Saharan Africa, but recent reductions in development assistance have intensified financing and service-delivery pressures across the region. As governments seek more durable and domestically sustained strategies, the private health sector may play a larger role in expanding financing, specialised care, innovation, workforce retention, and public-private partnerships. However, private sector expansion alone is not sufficient and may worsen inequities if it remains disconnected from natio

[Good governance of publicly-produced health services: ideas for moving forward].

The good performance of publicly-produced health services is of vital importance, well beyond the health sector. Taking into account the great complexity of the health services in the public sector due both to their public and professional nature, we identify seven Gordian Knots as being responsible for the most frequent problems of publicly produced health services in Spain and Latin America. From the concept of good governance we take its character as a normative and ethical benchmark and its potential to renew and invigorate the government of the public sector. From comparative analysis of …

The global programme to eliminate lymphatic filariasis.

Ten years ago, no one foresaw that in the year 2000 there would be a Global Programme to Eliminate Lymphatic Filariasis (GPELF) that is already 2 years old, active in 18 of the 80 endemic countries, and operating under a wholly new paradigm in public health - a paradigm affirming that public/private sector partnerships are essential in sharing both responsibilities and responses to global health problems. What has driven the LF Elimination Programme to this point? Where it is now headed? What will be required to sustain its momentum? What will its impact be? These are the issues addressed belo

Brazilian private health system: history, scenarios, and trends.

BACKGROUND: Health care is a complex economic and social system, which combines market elements and public and social interest. This combination in Brazil, like systems in China and United States of America, is operationalized through the public and private system. The sector represents approximately 9% of the country's GDP, of which 56% is privately sourced and 44% is of public origin. In the private sector includes a structure with 711 private health institutions, 47 million beneficiaries and revenues of US$30 billion a year. The role of non-governmental organizations in the social and the health system.

The article presents the definitions, objectives, fields and tasks of non-governmental organizations in social life, health system and health policy. In addition, the article addresses the issue of effectiveness and quality of NGOs' activity. The term "NGOs" (Non-governmental Organizations) includes different categories of entities that operate not to obtain financial gain, and also do not belong to the government sector. Non-governmental Organizations' fields of activity were described in the International Classification of Non-Profit Organizations (ICNPO). NGOs are an integral part of a demo

Public-private dialogue: an essential approach to engage non-state actors in a mixed health system.

Evidence shows that low-income and middle-income country (LMIC) governments are still facing challenges to systematically engage the private sector in health. Barriers to greater interactions between public and private health partners include mistrust of the private health sector's motives and misunderstanding of the profit motive, based on deep-rooted philosophical beliefs and personal experiences. This paper examines the implementation of public-private dialogue (PPD) as a means for addressing the aforementioned barriers facing the engagement of the private sector in health in LMICs. The pape

Financing cures in the United States.

True cures in health care are rare but likely not for long. The high price tag that accompanies a cure along with its rapid uptake create challenges in the financing of cures by public and private payers. In the US, the disaggregated nature of health insurance system adds to this challenge as patients frequently churn across multiple health plans. This creates a 'free-rider' problem, where no one health plan has the incentive to invest in cure since the returns will be scattered over many health plans. Here, a new health currency is proposed as a generalized version of a social impact bond tha

Better working conditions won by 'nurse wave' action: Japanese nurses' experience of getting a new law by their militant campaign.

Japanese nurses, like their counterparts in many other countries, are suffering from staff shortages and severe working conditions. The Japan Federation of Medical Workers' Unions (Nihon Iroren) launched a campaign in 1989 for nurses called the 'Nurse Wave'. Their demands were many: to increase the numbers of nursing staff, the regulation of night shifts, the implementation of a five-day working week everywhere, a fair appraisal of nurses' work, better vocational training, etc. Nurses in white uniforms assembled at meetings, marched and took part in nation-wide strikes. They collected over 5.4

Making waste management public (or falling back to sleep).

Human-produced waste is a major environmental concern, with communities considering various waste management practices, such as increased recycling, landfilling, incineration, and waste-to-energy technologies. This article is concerned with how and why publics assemble around waste management issues. In particular, we explore Noortje Marres and Bruno Latour's theory that publics do not exist prior to issues but rather assemble around objects, and through these assemblages, objects become matters of concern that sometimes become political. The article addresses this theory of making things publ

Engaging the private sector to increase access to HIV services and increase sustainability of the HIV response.

BACKGROUND: Public health facilities often manage high volumes of HIV clients and face challenges with long wait times, poor client satisfaction, and low retention in care. The private sector is a major provider of health services in many countries but is a relatively untapped resource for reducing congestion in high-volume public HIV facilities and increasing access to HIV services, particularly for clients who already use the private sector as their first point of care. Private banks, corporations, and clients themselves can also be a resource for generating additional financing for HIV and

The contribution of private and public centres to innovation in fertility care: acknowledging the past and preserving the future.

The remarkable advances in the efficacy and safety of IVF treatment that have been achieved since the first IVF baby was born in 1978 stand comparison with any other branch of medicine. These advances have continued despite the withdrawal of public investment in clinical reproductive medicine and research, raising a number of questions. How is this global shift from public to largely private sector care provision affecting the quality and direction of research, innovation and clinical training? This Commentary reviews the implications, both positive and less so, for academic reproductive medic

Enhancing tuberculosis care in Madhya Pradesh through public-private partnerships: An evaluation of the patient provider support agency (PPSA) model.

BACKGROUND: The quality of care that patients receive in the private sector has been reported to be poor. Madhya Pradesh began adopting the PPSA model in September 2020, initially covering 44 districts. By April 2022, the state achieved 100% coverage, becoming the first state in the country to implement PPSA across all 52 districts. Although PPSA is now operational in every district, health indicators in the private sector have shown little improvement, and notifications from the private sector remain significantly below the annual targets The patient provider support agency (PPSA) pilot progr
