Altered Reinforcement Learning from Reward and Punishment in Anorexia Nervosa: Evidence from Computational Modeling.

OBJECTIVES: Anorexia nervosa (AN) is associated with altered sensitivity to reward and punishment. Few studies have investigated whether this results in aberrant learning. The ability to learn from rewarding and aversive experiences is essential for flexibly adapting to changing environments, yet individuals with AN tend to demonstrate cognitive inflexibility, difficulty set-shifting and altered decision-making. Deficient reinforcement learning may contribute to repeated engagement in maladaptive behavior. METHODS: This study investigated learning in AN using a probabilistic associative learn

Executive Functioning, Reward/Punishment Sensitivity, and Conduct Problems in Boys With Callous-Unemotional Traits.

Callous-unemotional (CU) traits are thought to characterize children exhibiting persistent and severe conduct problems (CPs). Reward and punishment sensitivity have often been investigated, yet executive function problems have mostly been studied in adults. Moreover, the level of co-occurring CPs is important to take into account. Therefore, the current study investigated differences in reward responsivity, punishment sensitivity, and executive functioning (EF) between four subgroups of general community boys ( N = 346, Mage = 14.01 years, SD = 1.19): high CU/high CP, low CU/high CP, high CU/l

Age, sex and individual differences in punishment sensitivity: factors influencing the feedback-related negativity.

The anterior cingulate cortex (ACC) is central to evaluating performance outcomes and has been linked to individual differences in affective responses to feedback. We used electrophysiological source localization to examine the feedback-related negativity (FRN) and related ACC activity during a gambling task in relation to punishment and reward sensitivity among 16- to 17-year-old adolescents (n=20) and 18- to 29-year-old adults (n=30). The FRN was larger for monetary loss compared to win feedback and larger for high relative to low monetary value feedback, with no age differences in the FRN f

Reduced prefrontal cortical gray matter volume in young adults exposed to harsh corporal punishment.

OBJECTIVE: Harsh corporal punishment (HCP) during childhood is a chronic, developmental stressor associated with depression, aggression and addictive behaviors. Exposure to traumatic stressors, such as sexual abuse, is associated with alteration in brain structure, but nothing is known about the potential neurobiological consequences of HCP. The aim of this study was to investigate whether HCP was associated with discernible alterations in gray matter volume (GMV) using voxel-based morphometry (VBM). METHODS: 1455 young adults (18-25 years) were screened to identify 23 with exposure to HCP (m

Severe physical punishment: risk of mental health problems for poor urban children in Brazil.

OBJECTIVE: To examine the relationship between specific types of child mental health problems and severe physical punishment, in combination with other important known risk factors. METHODS: We conducted a cross-sectional study in Embu, São Paulo, Brazil, as the Brazilian component of a multicountry survey on abuse in the family environment. From a probabilistic sample of clusters that included all eligible households (women aged 15-49 years with a son or daughter < 18 years of age), we randomly selected one mother-child pair per household (n = 813; attrition rate: 17.6%). This study focused

Mesocorticolimbic circuitry in episodic migraine: reward- and punishment-related responses and resting-state connectivity.

BACKGROUND: Clinical evidence suggests an involvement of the dopaminergic system in migraine pathophysiology; however, its functional role remains poorly understood. We investigated neurofunctional alterations within mesocorticolimbic/dopaminergic circuits in individuals with episodic migraine compared with healthy controls. METHODS: We employed a Monetary Incentive Delay (MID) fMRI task to assess mesocorticolimbic function during reward and loss anticipation in individuals with episodic migraine (n = 25) and control subjects (n = 27). Group differences in task-related activity were examined w

Adolescent Attitudes, Peer Norms, and Teacher Corporal Punishment in Five Sub-Saharan African Countries.

PURPOSE: Corporal punishment by teachers remains one of the most pervasive forms of school-based violence in sub-Saharan Africa, undermining adolescent well-being and educational attainment despite statutory prohibitions. While most research has focused on prevalence, teacher behaviors, or household risk factors, little is known about how adolescents' own beliefs and peer normative environments shape their vulnerability to teacher violence. METHODS: This study analyzed nationally representative violence against children surveys from five countries: Eswatini (2021), Mozambique (2019), Kenya (2

A Procedure to Study Stress-induced Relapse of Heroin Seeking after Punishment-imposed Abstinence.

The punishment-imposed abstinence procedure models the self-imposed abstinence that humans initiate due to the adverse consequences associated with drug-taking. This model has been implemented in experiments using different types of substances of abuse such as methamphetamine, cocaine, and alcohol. However, punishment-induced abstinence in heroin-trained animals has not been demonstrated. Furthermore, acute stress is a key trigger for relapse in humans and animal models. It was previously demonstrated that acute food deprivation robustly induced reinstatement of extinguished cocaine and heroin

Amygdala inputs to prefrontal cortex guide behavior amid conflicting cues of reward and punishment.

Orchestrating appropriate behavioral responses in the face of competing signals that predict either rewards or threats in the environment is crucial for survival. The basolateral nucleus of the amygdala (BLA) and prelimbic (PL) medial prefrontal cortex have been implicated in reward-seeking and fear-related responses, but how information flows between these reciprocally connected structures to coordinate behavior is unknown. We recorded neuronal activity from the BLA and PL while rats performed a task wherein competing shock- and sucrose-predictive cues were simultaneously presented. The corre

Establishing the dopamine dependency of human striatal signals during reward and punishment reversal learning.

Drugs that alter dopamine transmission have opposite effects on reward and punishment learning. These opposite effects have been suggested to depend on dopamine in the striatum. Here, we establish for the first time the neurochemical specificity of such drug effects, during reward and punishment learning in humans, by adopting a coadministration design. Participants (N = 22) were scanned on 4 occasions using functional magnetic resonance imaging, following intake of placebo, bromocriptine (dopamine-receptor agonist), sulpiride (dopamine-receptor antagonist), or a combination of both drugs. Attitudes toward free speech, content moderation, and punishment of misinformation spreaders during infectious disease outbreaks.

INTRODUCTION: During infectious disease outbreaks, the spread of false information online may undermine public health interventions. At the same time, free speech is a core value in democratic societies, and in the early stages of a novel pathogen there is a legitimate need for open discussion among scientists, policymakers, and the public to negotiate responses under conditions of uncertainty. Any restrictions on speech on social media should therefore reflect public attitudes and normative trade-offs. Currently, no standardized instrument exists to measure public attitudes toward free speech

Corporal Punishment and Child Development in Low- and- Middle-Income Countries: Progress, Challenges, and Directions.

Most studies and reviews of studies on the developmental consequences of corporal punishment have focused on samples from the U.S. and other high-income countries. This study conducted a rapid review of the literature on the associations between corporal punishment and children's cognitive and social-emotional development in low- and- middle-income countries (LMICs). Information from more than 42 studies of children younger than 18 years living in 64 LMICs was reviewed. Overall, the reviewed studies show associations between corporal punishment and negative cognitive and social-emotional outco

Identifying Barriers to Trainees Addressing Corporal Punishment and Effective Discipline Using Simulation and Semistructured Debriefing.

OBJECTIVE: The objective of the current study was to examine (1) physician trainee interventions when confronted with a situation in which corporal punishment (CP) occurs in a simulated medical setting and (2) their knowledge, comfort, and experiences shared during a semistructured debriefing. METHODS: Themes were developed from simulation sessions from 2018 to 2019, where a convenience sample of training physicians was invited to participate. The simulation involved a medical visit where a caregiver becomes increasingly aggravated, eventually striking her child on the back of the head. There

Public policy and parent-child aggression: Considerations for reducing and preventing physical punishment and abuse.

Parent-child physical aggression, including both physical punishment and abuse, remains a prevalent problem in the United States. In this paper, we briefly review the prevalence and harms of parent-child aggression and discuss changes in social norms and policies over the past several decades. Then, we discuss broad social policies influencing risk for parent-child physical aggression, policies relevant to reducing and preventing physical abuse, and policies relevant to reducing and preventing physical punishment. We close by considering future directions to strengthen research and evaluation

Three Rostromedial Tegmental Afferents Drive Triply Dissociable Aspects of Punishment Learning and Aversive Valence Encoding.

Persistence of reward seeking despite punishment or other negative consequences is a defining feature of mania and addiction, and numerous brain regions have been implicated in such punishment learning, but in disparate ways that are difficult to reconcile. We now show that the ability of an aversive punisher to inhibit reward seeking depends on coordinated activity of three distinct afferents to the rostromedial tegmental nucleus (RMTg) arising from cortex, brainstem, and habenula that drive triply dissociable RMTg responses to aversive cues, outcomes, and prediction errors, respectively. Reciprocity in Undesirable Parent-Child Behavior? Verbal Aggression, Corporal Punishment, and Girls' Oppositional Defiant Symptoms.

Parental verbal aggression and corporal punishment are associated with children's conduct problems and oppositional defiant disorder (ODD). The strength of bidirectional relationships among specific disruptive behaviors has been inconsistent across gender, and the direction of influence between parental aggression and girls' ODD symptoms is particularly understudied. This study tested reciprocal effects between aggressive parent behaviors and girls' ODD dimensions of oppositionality, antagonism, and irritability. Data from the Pittsburgh Girls Study (N = 2,450) were used, including annual chil

Maternal use of physical punishment in response to child misbehavior: implications for child abuse prevention.

OBJECTIVE: The objective was to examine the roles of cognition and affect in maternal use of physical punishment. METHOD: Through a review of the literature, distal and proximal predictors (cognitive and affective) of physical punishment use were identified. One hundred and ten mothers of 3-year-old children were interviewed regarding two disciplinary situations that occurred during the previous 2-week period that elicited their strongest reactions: one which resulted in the use of physical punishment (if this occurred) and one which did not. The individual and combined contributions of the p

When Parent-Teacher Collaboration Turns Violent: Corporal Punishment in American Schools and Subsequent (Secondary) Trauma.

Methods. Through the lens of childhood trauma theory, a qualitative phenomenological study was conducted using purposive and snowball sampling methods to gain a deeper understanding of the experiences of former students with corporal punishment and how those experiences have shaped their academic and psychological outcomes. Interviews were conducted via Zoom with 19 men and women of different ages and races who attended schools in Mississippi. Results/Conclusions. The study revealed that parents and school personnel collaborated to punish the student corporally both on campus and at home. Rela

Applying the Integrative Model to Predict Intention to Use Corporal Punishment Among Low-income Parents.

Child corporal punishment (CP) is associated with child physical abuse, which is a public health problem in the United States. Informed by the integrative model of behavioral prediction, this study surveyed low-income Black, Hispanic, and White parents who had children younger than 6 years old (N = 260) to identify major risk factors that determined intention to use CP to discipline children. Structural equation modeling revealed that attitudes, descriptive norms, and perceived efficacy of alternative discipline strategies were associated with intention to use CP. Additionally, parents' childh

Parental corporal punishment and child anxiety in China: The moderating role of HPA-axis Activity.

BACKGROUND: Although negative associations between parental corporal punishment and child anxiety are well-documented, the potential moderators of these associations are not well characterized. Contemporary developmental perspectives suggest that biological vulnerability may influence the degree to which the environment affects child development. Thus, this study investigated the moderating role of one potential physiological marker, HPA-axis activity, in the relations between both maternal and paternal corporal punishment and child anxiety in China. METHODS: Participants were 158 elementary
