Neurodegenerative diseases (NDs) can induce subtle changes in eye movements, which can be used for diagnosis or evaluation. This study employs deep learning models to classify NDs using raw eye-tracking data from 133 participants: 51 healthy controls (CTL), 25 with Alzheimer's Disease (AD), 39 with Parkinson's Disease (PD), and 18 with Parkinson's Disease Mimics (PDM)-PD-like diseases often misdiagnosed as PD. Eye movements were recorded during smooth pursuit, text reading, and picture description tasks. Results suggest the text reading task, being structured and cognitively demanding, best di

Several psychophysiological abnormalities associated with schizophrenia have been proposed as genetic trait markers of vulnerability to the disorder. Smooth pursuit eye tracking dysfunction and abnormal long latency event-related potentials are the most promising candidates. Both are independent of the effects of psychotropic medication or mental state at the time of testing, and twin studies demonstrate that each has a high level of heritability. Having recorded smooth pursuit eye tracking and event-related potentials in 20 high-density schizophrenic families, we find abnormalities in one or

Movement of the body, head, or eyes with respect to the world creates one of the most common yet complex situations in which the visuomotor system must localize objects. In this situation, vestibular, proprioceptive, and extra-retinal information contribute to accurate visuomotor control. The utility of retinal motion information, on the other hand, is questionable, since a single pattern of retinal motion can be produced by any number of head or eye movements. Here we investigated whether retinal motion during a smooth pursuit eye movement contributes to visuomotor control. When subjects purs

OBJECTIVE: To investigate whether oculomotor features can distinguish Parkinson's disease (PD) patients with depression (PD-D) from those without depression (PDND), and to assess their association with depression severity in PD.
METHODS: Seventy-six PD patients were classified into PD-D and PDND groups based on clinical evaluation using the Hamilton Depression Rating Scale (HAMD). Eye movement data were collected using smooth pursuit, overlapping saccade, and anti-saccade tasks. Group differences in oculomotor parameters were analyzed. Receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curves were used

A mother and son suffer from hemiplegic migraine with onset in childhood. Both have nystagmus which has not changed for many years, but the date of onset is uncertain. They have an asymmetrical tremor, clinically indistinguishable from essential tremor. Neuroophthalmological examination revealed inability to produce smooth pursuit, gaze-paretic nystagmus, rebound nystagmus, failure of fixation suppression of the vestibuloocular reflex both horizontally and vertically, and low gain of the optokinetic system. These abnormalities, confirmed by electrooculography, are commonly seen in disease of t

Neural activity in the frontal eye fields controls smooth pursuit eye movements, but the relationship between single neuron responses, cortical population responses, and eye movements is not well understood. We describe an approach to dynamically link trial-to-trial fluctuations in neural responses to parallel variations in pursuit and demonstrate that individual neurons predict eye velocity fluctuations at particular moments during the course of behavior, while the population of neurons collectively tiles the entire duration of the movement. The analysis also reveals the strength of correlati

BACKGROUND: Schizophrenia is thought to arise from the interaction of genetically mediated and environmentally triggered abnormalities in brain function. Reduced frontal activation, reported in schizophrenic patients, may be one expression of genetic risk. The present study investigated whether frontal activation in relatives of schizophrenic patients would be related to eye tracking deficits (ETD), which are considered a behavioral marker of risk for schizophrenia.
METHODS: Subjects were first-degree relatives of schizophrenic patients (n = 17) and controls (n = 11). Relatives were divided i

Saccadic eye movements, fixation and smooth pursuit were studied in 28 children with Gilles de la Tourette syndrome and found to be normal. A link has been postulated between Gilles de la Tourette syndrome and other movement disorders. The results obtained in the present series do not support this hypothesis.

When intercepting a moving object, ocular and hand movements are often associated. The neural control of both tasks is known to combine sensory information with predictive mechanisms. When interacting with free-falling targets, the brain may integrate visual signals with an internal representation of gravity, which can be recruited also in virtual settings, when contextual cues about the environment naturalness are available. This internal representation may be shared between oculomotor and manual control. At the same time, concurrent execution of hand and eye movements may alter the oculomoto

Vision is essential for goal-directed locomotion, yet self-generated optic flow during movement through space blurs images, limiting high-acuity vision. One solution that mitigates this challenge for the visual system is aligning specialized regions of the eyes-acute zones or foveae-with optic flow minima, such as the focus of expansion during translation, while keeping periods of rotational optic flow as short as possible. Gaze stability thus arises from coordinated interactions between visual motion processing and precisely timed movements across the body. Although the specific motor program

Tourette syndrome (TS) is a neuropsychiatric disorder that is characterised by the presence of multiple vocal, facial, and motor tics which change with time, and a number of other behavioural phenomena. Previous studies have not revealed any ocular-motor abnormalities. We report the eye movement studies of a patient with TS, using electrooculography and simultaneous video recording. Intrusive saccades occurred during smooth pursuit and optokinetic nystagmus. Reflexive and voluntary saccades were dysmetric and there was a complete failure of antisaccades. These abnormalities are characteristic

Background: Despite their high lifetime prevalence, major depressive disorder (MDD) is often difficult to diagnose, and there is a need for useful biomarkers for the diagnosis of MDD. Eye movements are considered a non-invasive potential biomarker for the diagnosis of psychiatric disorders such as schizophrenia. However, eye movement deficits in MDD remain unclear. Thus, we evaluated detailed eye movement measurements to validate its usefulness as a biomarker in MDD. Methods: Eye movements were recorded from 37 patients with MDD and 400 healthy controls (HCs) using the same system at five Univ

Representational momentum (RM) refers to the forward displacement of a moving object's remembered position in the direction of motion. Although RM in continuous motion is known to depend on oculomotor tracking, it remains unclear whether manual visuomotor tracking also modulates this bias and, if so, whether the effect reflects tracking-related predictive processing or compensation for proprioceptive uncertainty. In Experiment 1, participants (N = 21) observed a horizontally moving target through a semi-transparent mirror that spatially aligned the target with the tracking hand, without provid

PURPOSE: Vertical vergence is a critical involuntary eye movement used to make relatively small and slow adjustments of the vertical position of each eye to achieve and maintain binocular fusion for daily activity. Little is known about the mechanisms driving vertical vergence, beginning with the contribution of specific extraocular muscle (EOM) groups and extending to its neural control. Here, we describe activity of cyclovertical extraocular motoneurons during vertical vergence in non-human primates to determine their role in generating this movement.
METHODS: In two non-human primates, we

Precise binocular alignment of the visual axes is of utmost importance for good vision. The fact that so few of us ever experience diplopia is evidence of how well the oculomotor system performs this function in the face of changes due to development, disease and injury. The capacity of the oculomotor system to adapt to visual stimuli that mimic alignment deficits has been extensively explored in laboratory experiments. While the present paper reviews many of those studies, the primary focus is on issues involved in maintaining good vertical and torsional alignment in everyday viewing situatio

We present a new method for the analysis of reading eye movements based on the methods of nonlinear dynamics. In this preliminary study, the eye movements of normal and abnormal readers were analyzed for evidence of chaotic, nonlinear dynamical behavior. Both power spectral density analysis and fractal dimension determination showed evidence of nonlinearity as manifest in chaotic behavior. The computed fractal dimension of the system's presumed attractor seemed directly related to qualitative assessment of reading ability. Representative subjects did not differ in a similar analysis of pursuit

Pursuit eye movements give rise to retinal motion. To judge stimulus motion relative to the head, the visual system must correct for the eye movement by using an extraretinal, eye-velocity signal. Such correction is important in a variety of motion estimation tasks including judgments of object motion relative to the head and judgments of self-motion direction from optic flow. The Filehne illusion (where a stationary object appears to move opposite to the pursuit) results from a mismatch between retinal and extraretinal speed estimates. A mismatch in timing could also exist. Speed and timing e

A woman with superior oblique myokymia (SOM) was cured of her condition by performing a Harada-Ito procedure. This procedure involves transposing the anterior portion of the superior oblique tendon, which is responsible for cyclorotation, nasally to create an effective weakening of the anterior portion of the tendon instead of temporal displacement utilized for superior oblique paresis. We measured the patient's eye movements before and after surgery, using the magnetic search coil technique, and confirmed that (1) the SOM was abolished and (2) vertical eye movements, including saccades, were
