Insecticide resistance is an increasing problem worldwide that limits the efficacy of control methods against several pests of health interest. Among them, Aedes albopictus mosquitoes are efficient vectors of relevant pathogens causing animal and human diseases worldwide, including yellow fever, chikungunya, dengue, and Zika. Different mechanisms are associated in conferring resistance to chemical insecticides. One of the most widespread and analysed mechanisms is the knockdown resistance (kdr) causing resistance to DDT and pyrethroids. The mechanism is associated with mutations in the voltage

BACKGROUND: Pyrethroids are synthetic derivatives of naturally occurring pyrethrum. These molecules are widely used in agriculture for ant, fly and mosquito control and for lawn and garden care. Pyrethroids are the optically active esters of 2,2-dimethyl-3-(2-methylpropenyl)-cyclopropane carboxylic acid, also known as chrysanthemic acid. However, their intense use has resulted in the development of resistance in many insect species. Herein, specific structural modifications of the pyrethroid scaffold and their effect on insecticidal activity, especially on resistant pests strains, are reported

Contact and noncontact behavioral actions of wild-caught Anopheles dirus in response to the operational field dose of three synthetic pyrethroids (bifenthrin, α-cypermethrin and λ-cyhalothrin) were evaluated using an exito-repellency test chamber. DEET was used as the repellency standard for comparison with the other three synthetic pyrethroids. Results showed that test specimens rapidly escaped from the test chamber when exposed to direct contact with a surface treated with each of the three synthetic pyrethroids and DEET. Alpha-cypermethrin demonstrated the strongest irritant action (84.9% e

Topical treatment (at the neck and along the vertebral column) with deltamethrin (Butox 7.5 pour on) of cattle (30 ml/400-kg body weight) and sheep (10 ml/60-kg body weight) was done to find out, whether the insecticide may reach in a sufficient dosage the legs, which are known to be the main biting site of Culicoides specimens that are the vectors of the recently introduced Bluetongue virus in central Europe. At days 7, 14, 21, 28, and 35 after treatment, some hair was cut off from the legs--close to the claws. Freshly (the night before) caught Culicoides obsoletus specimens were then exposed

The pyrethroid flumethrin (Bayticol) was tested in camels (Camelus dromedarius) as a pour-on for the control of the camel tick, Hyalomma dromedarii. Two, small, naturally infested camel herds, one heavily infested and the other lightly infested, each composed of eight head of animals, were used for this field trial. In each herd, four camels were randomly selected for treatment and the other four untreated camels were kept as controls. The heavily infested herd was treated with 2 ml 10kg-1 body weight per animal whereas the lightly infested herd was treated with 1 ml 10kg-1 body weight per ani

Pyrethroids are synthetic insecticides which world-wide increasingly replace DDT, Lindane, Organophosphate-pesticides etc. in fields like agriculture, hygienics, household, wear- and building industry. Being lipophilic and strongly neurotoxic substances, a considerable health risk has been predicted in regard of pyrethroid applications. On the other hand the published experimental data are often interpreted as proof of a small, calculable and, therefore, controllable risk. The present paper attempts to specify the reasons for these contrary judgements with regard to the pyrethroid effects. Sin

Aedes albopictus is a major global vector of arboviruses. Pyriproxyfen, an insect growth regulator, is increasingly used for mosquito control, but the potential for resistance and cross-resistance with pyrethroids poses a serious threat. Through 13 generations of laboratory selection, we established a highly pyriproxyfen-resistant Ae. albopictus strain (Lab-R, RR50 = 10.12). This strain developed moderate to high cross-resistance to the permethrin, deltamethrin, and beta-cypermethrin (RR50 = 8.11-10.30). Resistance was associated with significant fitness costs, including prolonged larval devel

This study assesses pesticide in crops from Togo, West Africa's Plateaux region and evaluates health risks associated with farmers' exposure during pesticide application. A survey was conducted involving 350 farmers and 48 pesticide sellers. Operator exposure was assessed using the British predictive operator exposure model and the European Food Safety Authority calculator. A multiresidue analysis of 51 pesticides was carried out after a quick easy cheap effective rugged safe (QuECHERS) extraction and purification using a gas chromatography system on six types of agricultural products during b

Chemical interventions targeting mosquito vectors may unintentionally affect non-target beneficial mosquitoes occupying similar ecological niches. This study evaluated the susceptibility of the beneficial mosquito Toxorhynchites rutilus septentrionalis (Dyar & Knab) to commonly used mosquito control products at operational field rates and compared its responses with those of Aedes aegypti L. Two adulticides, permethrin-based Aqua-Kontrol 30-30 and bifenthrin-based Talstar P Professional, and 3 larvicides, Vectobac 12AS (Bacillus thuringiensis israelensis [Bti]), Natular DT (spinosad), and Alto

Cypermethrin, a synthetic pyrethroid, has been found to contaminate water bodies adjacent to agricultural lands and is reported to be moderately toxic to the organisms living therein. This study examined the effects of cypermethrin on respiratory biomarkers in Oreochromis niloticus at four sub-lethal concentrations, including a control (0.0, 0.3, 0.6, and 1.0 µg/L) over 96 h. The actual concentrations were analytically confirmed through GC-ECD, with an average recovery rate of 93±0.21%. Cypermethrin-exposed O. niloticus showed higher mean opercular movement rates and oxygen consumption than th

Symbiotic bacteria are closely associated with insect adaptability and survival, particularly in species with nutritionally limited diets. In the tropical bed bug Cimex hemipterus, these microbial partners synthesize essential nutrients such as B vitamins and amino acids that are absent from blood meals. The global resurgence of bed bug infestations, fueled by increased international travel and insecticide resistance, has challenged conventional control methods. Microbial symbionts are increasingly suspected to contribute to resistance mechanisms, but their role remains poorly defined. This st

Chlorfenapyr is a frequently used insecticide in vegetables, and understanding its translocation and distribution are important for determining the residues and dietary safety in these crops. In this paper, we studied the translocation, subcellular distribution, and dissipation of chlorfenapyr and tralopyril in soil-cultivated cherry radish. Both upward and downward translocations were observed for the analytes, although the extent was limited, as indicated by the bioconcentration and translocation factors (both <1). The analytes were primarily accumulated in the cell walls. Chlorfenapyr dissi

Synthetic pyrethroid insecticides are widely used in agriculture but pose increasing concerns due to their persistence, chemical complexity, and accumulation in food systems. Recent toxicological findings have integrated molecular-initiating events, as ion-channel perturbation, with downstream oxidative stress, endocrine disruption, and adverse outcomes relevant to food safety. This review highlights recent advances in understanding their chemical behavior in food matrices, including their stability, interactions, and transformation during processing. Analytical developments-such as improved s

Malaria continues to be a major public health issue in Ghana, contributing significantly to hospital outpatient visits. Vector control remains central to malaria prevention; however, the growing resistance of malaria vectors to insecticides presents a major obstacle to control and elimination efforts. This review examined the evolution of insecticide resistance in Ghana from 2001 to 2024, summarising resistance mechanisms across the country's bioclimatic zones to inform evidence-based vector control strategies aligned with Ghana's malaria elimination goals. A systematic literature search was c
