Mutagens produced by the pyrolysis of opium and its alkaloids as possible risk factors in cancer of the bladder and oesophagus.

Samples of opium pipe scrapings (opium dross, called sukhteh locally), but not of crude opium, collected in an area with a high incidence of oesophageal cancer in north-east Iran, were shown to contain pro-mutagens, producing mostly frameshift mutations in Salmonella typhimurium strains TA1538 and TA98 after metabolic activation. Pyrolysis of opium and of its major alkaloid, morphine, yielded smoke condensates with mutagenic activities 10 and 100 times higher, respectively, than that of the sukhteh samples tested. Heterocyclic aromatic hydrocarbons and primary aromatic amines present at differ…

Innovative model-optimized machine learning for high-accuracy predicting and exploring nitrogen transformation in biomass pyrolysis.

To enhance the environmental benefits of producing "zero-carbon" fuels from waste biomass pyrolysis, it is essential to suppress the formation of nitrogen oxides (NOx) at the source. The key lies in precisely regulating the migration and transformation behavior of nitrogen during the pyrolysis process. Addressing the limitations of traditional experimental methods in analyzing this complex process, this study proposes for the first time the Pyro-SPIN (Source Parameter-based Integrated Nitrogen Migration) model, which enables the synergistic prediction and optimization of nitrogen migration pat…

Fast Pyrolysis of Deashed High-Urea-Formaldehyde Resin Biomass Waste for Platform Chemical and Carbonaceous Fuel.

High ash andsss urea formaldehyde (UF) resin contents in particleboard sanding powder (SP) have restricted the effective resource utilization of SP and make it a hazardous biomass material for particleboard enterprises. To achieve high-value resource utilization of SP while addressing its hazardous disposal issues, different HCl concentration-oriented deashing pretreatments of SP coupled with fast pyrolysis was proposed for producing value-added pyrolytic sugar levoglucosan (LG) and high-quality pyrolytic char. The results show that H+ ions released from HCl solution could effectively remove s…

Oat straw pyrolysis with ammonium chloride doping: Analysis of evolved gases, kinetic triplet, and thermodynamic parameters.

The purpose of this work was to determine the effect of the addition of NH4Cl to oat straw on the evolved gases, kinetic triplet, and thermodynamic parameters of the pyrolysis process at 873 K. A complementary approach allowed to assess the effects of the pyrolysis of chlorine- and nitrogen-enriched biomass. The thermal analysis of biomass was performed for four heating rates (5, 10, 20, and 30 K/min). The doping of NH4Cl in the straw favoured i) carbonisation of the chars, ii) formation of C-N bonds, iii) reduction of evolved CH4 and CO2, and iv) an increase in the mean values of the effectiv…

Nutrients enriched biochar production through Co-Pyrolysis of poultry litter with banana peduncle and phosphogypsum waste.

Poultry litter (PL) utilisation has been widely studied for production of phosphorus (P) rich biochars. Recent research documented co-pyrolysis of PL with nutrient rich chemical additives like rock phosphate, phosphoric acid and magnesium (Mg) salts for production of P-Mg enriched biochar with improved P use efficiency. However, research is highly scarce on utilisation of waste materials for production of PL biochar enriched in P, potassium (K) and sulphur (S). In this context, present work investigated co-pyrolysis (700°C, 10°C/min, 1h residence time) of PL with banana peduncle (BP) and phosp…

Variation behavior of organic compounds in melamine-urea-formaldehyde impregnated bond paper in different pyrolysis stages.

Melamine-urea-formaldehyde impregnated bond paper (MUF) is widely used as panel coating and decorative raw paper. Inappropriate treatment of MUF may lead to environmental pollution. In this study, routine MUF and MUF treated with additional titanium (MUF-T) were subjected to fast pyrolysis, and the product properties at different temperatures were investigated. The pyrolysis temperature was selected considering the reaction stages determined by Gaussian curve-fitting on thermogravimetric analysis curves. It was found that the presence of additional titanium changed the decomposition order of t…

Co-pyrolysis of sewage sludge and Ca(H2PO4)2: heavy metal stabilization, mechanism, and toxic leaching.

The presence of unstable heavy metals in sewage sludge (SS) restricts its resource utilization. In this study, Ca(H2PO4)2 and SS were co-pyrolyzed to produce biochar, which contained relatively stable heavy metals. X-ray diffraction spectroscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, and inductively coupled plasma atomic emission techniques were used to analyze the physical and chemical properties and heavy metal content of the biochar. The results indicated that co-pyrolysis of SS with Ca(H2PO4)2 resulted in the production of more stable heavy metals in the SS. The optimal co-pyrolysis con…

Transformation of Cyanobacterial Biomolecules by Iron Oxides During Flash Pyrolysis: Implications for Mars Life-Detection Missions.

Answering the question of whether life ever existed on Mars is a key goal of both NASA's and ESA's imminent Mars rover missions. The obfuscatory effects of oxidizing salts, such as perchlorates and sulfates, on organic matter during thermal decomposition analysis techniques are well established. Less well studied are the transformative effects of iron oxides and (oxy)hydroxides, which are present in great abundances in the martian regolith. We examined the products of flash pyrolysis-gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (a technique analogous to the thermal techniques employed by past, current…

Chitosan-derived biochars obtained at low pyrolysis temperatures for potential application in electrochemical energy storage devices.

N-rich biochars were obtained via pyrolysis treatment of chitosan (a low-cost biopolymer from natural biomasses) at mild conditions (in the 284 °C-540 °C range), thus offering an energy efficient and low carbon footprint synthesis. These low surface area N-doped biochars were morphologically and physicochemically characterized, and tested as hosting material in lithium-sulfur (Li-S) batteries. Sulfur/biochars cathodes thus obtained showed good capacity retention and improved Coulombic efficiency compared to a standard N-rich high surface area carbon and multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWCNT) ref…

Effect of chemical pretreatment on pyrolysis of non-metallic fraction recycled from waste printed circuit boards.

The non-metallic fraction from waste printed circuit boards (NMF-WPCB) generally consists of plastics with high content of Br, glass fibers and metals (e.g. Cu), which are normally difficult to dispose. This work aims to study the chemical pretreatments by using alkalis, acids and alkali-earth-metal salts on pyrolysis of NMF-WPCB. Char (60-79%) and volatile matter (21-40%) can be produced via the pyrolysis process. In particular, the ash content can reach up to 42-56%, which was attributed to the high content of glass fibers and other minerals. Copper (Cu, 2.5%), calcium (Ca, 28.7%), and alumi…

Pyrolysis of Yellow Passion Fruit Peel Waste: A Route to Bio-Oil and Value-Added Chemicals.

This study explores the pyrolysis of yellow passion fruit peel, focusing on bio-oil yields and the chemical characterization of the resulting products under different temperature conditions of biomass drying (373, 378, and 423 K). The liquid product obtained from the pyrolysis process was analyzed using NMR spectroscopy and GC-MS, revealing that acidic groups, ketones, and aromatic compounds predominate in the bio-oil, while alcohols were present in smaller amounts. The effective diffusivity (Deff) of moisture during drying was low, suggesting that moisture moves slowly through the peel, which…

A feature-centric predictive and sensitivity analysis framework for bio-oil yield assessment in biomass pyrolysis.

Accurately predicting bio-oil yield from biomass pyrolysis is a real challenge due to nonlinear interactions between feedstock physicochemical properties and operating conditions. In addition, high feature dimensionality, uncertainties in experimental measurements, and multicollinearity make prediction accuracy and interpretability even more difficult, which explains the demand for a feature-driven and explainable modeling framework. We developed an advanced regression feature-based machine learning framework trained on a very comprehensive dataset of both biomass characteristics and pyrolysis…

Catalytic Pyrolysis of Polypropylene to Benzene, Toluene, and Xylene (BTX) Using a Double-Fluidized-Bed Reactor.

The current plastic value chain is highly linear, leading to large amounts of waste plastics that harm the environment and human health. Recycling is required, and among the options, catalytic pyrolysis is particularly suited to convert polyolefin-rich plastic waste into useful chemicals such as benzene, toluene, and xylene (BTX). In this paper, we demonstrate ex situ catalytic pyrolysis of polypropylene in a continuous double-fluidized-bed reactor to produce BTX. The optimal pyrolysis temperature in the first fluidized-bed reactor was 550 °C, giving a BTX yield of 22.3 wt % (based on PP input…

Experimental investigation on pyrolysis of coking waste salts: Mechanism of organic compounds removal and salt agglomeration.

Evaporative crystallization of high-salinity wastewater produces hazardous waste salts. This study aimed to investigate coking waste salt (CWS) and employed pyrolysis to eliminate organic impurities. The pyrolysis mechanism, properties, and agglomeration characteristics of CWS were examined. Results showed that pyrolysis disrupts the functional groups of organic compounds, but benzene rings are resistant to removal. Below 500 °C, pyrolysis in air was more effective than pyrolysis in N2, whereas above 500 °C, the difference between pyrolysis in air and N2 was negligible. Agglomeration was prima…
