Association Between the Medial-Lateral Quadriceps and Hamstring Muscle Thickness and the Knee Kinematics and Kinetics During Single-Leg Landing.

BACKGROUND: Muscle thickness can influence the joint kinematics and/or kinetics during dynamic activities. The relationship between the muscle thickness of individual quadriceps and hamstrings or medial-to-lateral thigh muscle thickness ratio and the knee kinematics/kinetics with respect to anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury risk remains unclear. HYPOTHESIS: Higher medial-to-lateral thigh muscle thickness ratio would be associated with lower knee valgus angle/moment and lower tibial internal rotation angle/moment during single-leg landing. STUDY DESIGN: Cross-sectional. LEVEL OF EVIDEN

Different time course recovery of muscle edema within the quadriceps femoris and functional performance after single- vs multi-joint exercises.

This study aimed to verify the time course recovery of muscle edema within the quadriceps femoris and functional performance after lower-body single- and multi-joint exercises. For this within-participant unilateral and contralateral experimental design, fourteen untrained young males performed a unilateral knee extension exercise (KE), and a unilateral leg press (LP) exercise in a counterbalanced order. At pre-, post-, 24 h, 48 h, 72 h, and 96 h after exercise, the peak torque (PT), unilateral countermovement jump (uCMJ) performance, and rectus femoris (RF) and vastus lateralis (VL) muscle th

Recovery process of the muscle activities during walking with efficient early quadriceps training and gait exercises after total knee arthroplasty.

BACKGROUND: Total knee arthroplasty (TKA) by the trivector approach is less invasive to the knee extensor mechanism; early quadriceps training is possible and a good prognosis is expected after surgery. However, investigations regarding lower limb muscle activity during gait have not been reported after using the trivector approach. To determine an effective postoperative rehabilitation program, we analyzed the recovery processes of leg muscle activities during walking. METHODS: Fourteen subjects with severe knee osteoarthritis (OA) who underwent early exercises after TKA by trivector approac

Effect of a high intensity quadriceps fatigue protocol on knee joint mechanics and muscle activation during gait in young adults.

The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of impaired quadriceps function on knee joint biomechanics and neuromuscular function during gait. Surface electromyograms, three-dimensional motion and ground reaction forces were collected during gait before and after 20 healthy adults completed a high intensity quadriceps fatigue protocol. Pattern recognition techniques were utilized to examine changes in amplitude and temporal characteristics of all gait variables. The fatigue protocol resulted in decreased knee extensor torque generation and quadriceps median power frequencies for 18 o

A network pharmacology-based study to investigate the mechanism of curcumin-regulated regenerative repair of quadriceps femoris muscle in KOA rats.

BACKGROUND: Knee osteoarthritis (KOA) is a very common musculoskeletal disorder, and patients with KOA often exhibit significant quadriceps femoris muscle atrophy. It is well established that curcumin (CUR) exerts protective effects on skeletal muscle. However, the efficacy of CUR in treating KOA-induced quadriceps femoris muscle atrophy and its underlying mechanisms remain uncertain. In this study, we employed network pharmacology to investigate the mechanism by which CUR promotes regenerative repair of the quadriceps femoris muscle in rats with KOA. METHODS: The potential targets of CUR wer

Bilateral isokinetic peak torque of quadriceps and hamstring muscles in professional soccer players with dominance on one or both two sides.

AIM: Dominance of one leg may cause asymmetry between the contralateral muscle groups and develop predisposition for injury to the leg with the weaker muscle strength. The purpose of this study was to examine the strength balance in the extensor and flexor muscle groups, as well as the hamstring to quadriceps (H/Q) ratios of both legs in professional soccer players with dominance on one or both legs. METHODS: Forty-two professional soccer players of the first Greek division participated in this study. Participants were divided into 3 groups according to their leg use during training sessions

Relationship Between Quadriceps Muscle Strength Asymmetry and Lower Limb Biomechanical Asymmetry During Running in Patients Who Underwent Anterior Cruciate Ligament Reconstruction.

(1) Background: Postoperative anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction often involves quadriceps strength asymmetry, leading to abnormal lower limb biomechanics during running. While previous studies have examined the relationship between isokinetic strength and walking or jumping, the association between running, a key criterion for return to sport, and lower limb biomechanics remains unclear, particularly regarding isokinetic strength asymmetry at different angular velocities. (2) Methods: Isokinetic quadriceps strength, running kinematic, and kinetic data were collected from 39 ACLR indivi

Decreased passive muscle stiffness of vastus medialis is associated with poorer quadriceps strength and knee function after anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction.

BACKGROUND: Muscle deficits of the quadriceps and hamstrings are common after anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction, and increase the risk of knee reinjury. Muscle stiffness is an important factor for dynamic joint stability. However, the changes in quadriceps and hamstring muscle stiffness and its influence after anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction remain unclear. METHOD: Twenty-five male subjects with anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction and twenty-one matched healthy subjects participated in this study. The passive muscle stiffness of the quadriceps and hamstrings was assess

Persistent Human Quadriceps Muscle Volume Deficits Following ACL Reconstruction Are Associated With No Detectable Between-Leg Differences in Vastus Lateralis Muscle Signaling at Rest or Immediately Following Resistance Exercise.

Quadriceps muscle deficits following anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury can persist years beyond reconstruction (ACLR), but the underlying molecular mechanisms remain largely unexplored. This study investigated whether persistent muscle deficits following ACLR are associated with defects in hypertrophic signaling pathways in response to acute resistance exercise. Twelve participants (7 females, 5 males; age 26.7 ± 4.1 years; 2.6 ± 1.5 years post-ACL injury) underwent MRI scanning and one-repetition maximum (1RM) testing to determine muscle volume and unilateral leg-press strength in the A

Ultrasound evaluation of quadriceps muscle thickness and body fat distribution in children receiving maintenance hemodialysis: a cross-sectional case-control study.

UNLABELLED: Children on hemodialysis (HD) are at multifactorial nutritional risk. Nutritional assessment in these children is challenging because conventional anthropometric and dietary indicators are influenced by growth failure, chronic inflammation, and fluid shifts. Ultrasound (US)-based muscle assessment has emerged as a practical bedside method for evaluating muscle mass, while data on US-derived fat distribution in this population are limited. This cross-sectional case-control study was conducted at a tertiary HD center and enrolled 42 children on HD and 42 age- and sex-matched apparent

The past and future of peri-operative interventions to reduce arthrogenic quadriceps muscle inhibition after total knee arthroplasty: A narrative review.

Total knee arthroplasty (TKA) improves patient-reported function by alleviating joint pain, however the surgical trauma exacerbates already impaired muscle function, which leads to further muscle weakness and disability after surgery. This early postoperative strength loss indicates a massive neural inhibition and is primarily driven by a deficit in quadriceps muscle activation, a process known as arthrogenic muscle inhibition (AMI). To enhance acute recovery of quadriceps muscle function and long-term rehabilitation of individuals after TKA, AMI must be significantly reduced in the early post

MRI-Based Volumetric Analysis of the Quadriceps Muscles Correlation With Knee Extension Strength in Patients Undergoing Anterior Cruciate Ligament Reconstruction.

BACKGROUND: Preoperative quadriceps and hamstring muscle weakness may predispose patients to strength deficits and prolonged recovery in the setting of anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury. Three-dimensional (3D) magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) analysis has been developed to provide a comprehensive assessment of the thigh musculature. PURPOSE: To (1) describe the magnitude of quadriceps and hamstring muscle weakness relative to the uninjured limb preoperatively in patients with known ACL tears, and (2) determine if preoperative quadriceps and hamstring muscle volume correlate with quadric

Knee flexion range of motion does not influence muscle hypertrophy of the quadriceps femoris during leg press training in resistance-trained individuals.

This study investigated the effect of knee flexion range of motion (ROM) during the leg press exercise on quadriceps femoris muscle hypertrophy in resistance-trained individuals. Twenty-three participants (training age: 7.2 ± 3.5 years) completed a within-participant design, performing four sets of unilateral leg presses to momentary failure twice weekly for 8 weeks. In one leg, the knee flexion range of motion (ROM) was fixed at approximately 5-100°, while for the other leg, participants used their maximum individualized ROM (5-154 ± 7.8°). Quadriceps muscle thickness was assessed via B-mode

Single-nucleus RNA sequencing reveals molecular determinants of functional and physiological differences between extraocular and quadriceps muscles in Macaca fascicularis.

Extraocular muscles (EOM) display distinct physiological and pathological characteristics compared with limb skeletal muscles. To define the molecular basis of these differences, we performed single-nucleus RNA sequencing on EOM and quadriceps femoris muscle (QFM) from Macaca fascicularis. Transcriptomic profiling revealed distinct cell type compositions, with EOM enriched in fast-twitch fibers (2 A/2×), fibro-adipogenic progenitors, and neural-associated cells. EOM myonuclei expressed genes involved in synaptic transmission and axon development, whereas QFM myofibers were enriched for oxidati

Changes in calsequestrin, TNF-α, TGF-β and MyoD levels during the progression of skeletal muscle dystrophy in mdx mice: a comparative analysis of the quadriceps, diaphragm and intrinsic laryngeal muscles.

In Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD), the search for new biomarkers to follow the evolution of the disease is of fundamental importance in the light of the evolving gene and pharmacological therapies. In addition to the lack of dystrophin, secondary events including changes in calcium levels, inflammation and fibrosis greatly contribute to DMD progression and the molecules involved in these events may represent potential biomarkers. In this study, we performed a comparative evaluation of the progression of dystrophy within muscles that are differently affected by dystrophy (diaphragm; DIA and
