Global disulfide bond profiling for crude snake venom using dimethyl labeling coupled with mass spectrometry and RADAR algorithm.

Snake venom consists of toxin proteins with multiple disulfide linkages to generate unique structures and biological functions. Determination of these cysteine connections usually requires the purification of each protein followed by structural analysis. In this study, dimethyl labeling coupled with LC-MS/MS and RADAR algorithm was developed to identify the disulfide bonds in crude snake venom. Without any protein separation, the disulfide linkages of several cytotoxins and PLA2 could be solved, including more than 20 disulfide bonds. The results show that this method is capable of analyzing p…

Using Legacy Polysomnography Data to Train a Radar System to Quantify Sleep in Older Adults and People living with Dementia.

OBJECTIVE: Ultra-wideband (UWB) radar technology offers a promising solution for unobtrusive and cost-effective in-home sleep monitoring. However, the limited availability of radar sleep data poses challenges in building robust models that generalize across diverse cohorts and environments. This study proposes a novel deep transfer learning framework to enhance sleep stage classification using radar data. METHODS: An end-to-end neural network was developed to classify sleep stages based on nocturnal respiratory and motion signals. The network was trained using a combination of large-scale pol…

Diagnostic Evaluation of Automatic Noncontact Ultra-Wideband Radar Combined With Oximeter for Obstructive Sleep Apnea in the South of China.

Background: Polysomnography (PSG) is the traditional technique for diagnosing obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) with some limitations. Ultra-wideband radar (UWB) is a new method for diagnosing OSA that combines multiple techniques including radar technology, artificial intelligence (AI), and big data algorithms. The accuracy of UWB in OSA diagnosis needs further scientific verification, especially in southern China. Methods: Fifty patients from southern China wore UWB with oximetry and PSG simultaneously overnight. UWB generated automated reports; PSG was manually interpreted. Lowest oxygen satura…

Exploring a Novel Hypothesis: Could the Eye Function as a Radar or Ultrasound Device in Depth and Distance Perception? Neurophysiological Insights.

UNLABELLED: Recent advancements in ocular physiology suggest that the eyes may function similarly to radar antennae or ultrasound probes, with the occipital cortex acting as a detector, challenging the traditional view of binocular vision as the primary mechanism for depth and distance perception. METHODS: We conducted a comprehensive analysis of the neuroanatomical and histological architecture of the neuro-optico-cortical systems in a male wild rabbit model. The objective was to identify potential structural and functional similarities between the retino-optical system and radar/ultrasound …

A Time-of-Flight and Radar Dataset of a neonatal Thorax Simulator with synchronized Reference Sensor Signals for respiratory Rate Detection.

In this paper we present an open-source Time-of-Flight and radar dataset of a neonatal thorax simulator for the development of respiratory rate detection algorithms. As it is very difficult to gain recordings of (preterm) neonates and there is hardly any open-source data available, we built our own neonatal thorax simulator which simulates the movement of the thorax due to respiration. We recorded Time-of-Flight (ToF) and radar data at different respiratory rates in a range of 5 to 80 breaths per minute (BPM) and with varying upstroke heights. As gold standard a laser micrometer was used. The …

Research and Diagnostic Algorithmic Rules (RADAR) for mood disorders, recurrence of illness, suicidal behaviours, and the patient's lifetime trajectory.

The top-down Diagnostic and Statistical Manual/International Statistical Classification of Diseases categories of mood disorders are inaccur … ities. Nonetheless, our previous studies did not compute Research and Diagnostic Algorithmic Rules (RADAR) to diagnose MDMD and score ROI, lifetime (LT), and current suicidal behaviours, as well as the phenome of mood disorders. Here, we provide rules to compute bottom-up RADAR scores for MDMD, ROI, LT and current suicidal ideation and attempts, the phe …

Seven-step handwashing recognition based on multi-angle information fusion from dual millimeter-wave radars.

Hand hygiene is essential for reducing healthcare-associated infections (HAIs), yet compliance remains suboptimal. Although monitoring can significantly improve hand hygiene compliance and quality, existing methods often entail high labor costs, privacy concerns, or intrusive sensors. To address these limitations, this study proposes a non-contact seven-step handwashing recognition method using millimeter-wave radar. A dual-radar collaborative architecture is designed, in which front-view and up-view radars jointly capture hand-motion scattering signals. A dual-branch convolutional neural netw…

Reimagining falls prevention with insights from systems mapping on the use of millimetre-wave radar for remote health monitoring.

Falls constitute a significant public health concern, demanding innovative solutions that transcend traditional methodologies. Current falls practice focuses on reactive post-fall assessment and management rather than proactive prevention and mitigation. We propose that millimetre-wave radar technology for real-time, continuous falls risk screening at home may address the limitations of current falls practice. To investigate the feasibility of this solution, we interviewed five experts in physiotherapy, falls prevention among older adults, and comprehensive geriatric assessment to identify the…

A Case of Amoebic Liver Abscess Presenting as a Therapeutic Conundrum Necessitating the Exploration of Other Under-the-Radar Treatment Modalities.

Tropical countries have recorded incidences of amoebic liver abscess (ALA) owing to the more significant epidemiology and pathogenicity of the intestinal protozoan Entamoeba histolytica in these regions. However, the rise in the number of immigrants from such areas to developed countries has made it necessary to thoroughly review the diseases caused by the parasite globally. Patients generally present with the usual features of right upper quadrant pain, painful hepatomegaly, mild jaundice, and vomiting, to name a few; however, the condition can manifest varied presentations accompanied by a p

CSSTag: Optical Nanoscale Radar and Particle Tracking for In-Body and Microfluidic Systems With Vibrating Graphene and Resonance Energy Transfer.

Biological particle tracking systems monitor cellular processes or particle behaviors with the great accuracy. The emissions of fluorescent molecules or direct images of particles are captured with cameras or photodetectors. The current imaging systems have challenges in detection, collection, and analysis of imaging data, penetration depth, and complicated set-ups. In this paper, a signaling-based nanoscale acousto-optic radar and microfluidic multiple particle tracking (MPT) system is proposed based on the theoretical design providing nanoscale optical modulator with vibrating Förster resona…

A Preliminary Study to Forecast Japanese Encephalitis Vector Abundance in Paddy Growing Area, with the Aid of Radar Satellite Images.

Vector mosquitoes of Japanese encephalitis (JE) breed mostly in rice fields, and human cases occur scattered over extended rural rice-growing areas. From this, one may surmise an ecological connection with the irrigation facilities and paddy cultivation. Furthermore, it has been hypothesized that a particular stage of paddy growth is a premonitory sign that can lead to a markedly increased population of the vector mosquitoes. The present study aimed to forecast the vector abundance by monitoring the paddy growth using remote sensing and geographical information systems. The abundance of the JE

SCOUT® radar localization of non-palpable breast carcinomas versus traditional wire-based localization: a single center retrospective comparison.

PURPOSE: Breast-conserving therapy requires a secure method to localize non-palpable lesions. The traditional and simple metal wire localization (WL) is challenged by more advanced and costly techniques that may have several advantages. We report the first European direct comparison between WL and SCOUT® Radar Localization (RL) comparing oncological and logistical benefits of implementing the new method in the treatment of non-palpable breast carcinomas including in situ lesions. METHODS: We retrospectively analyzed 150 breast cancer surgeries performed immediately before and after WL was rep…

Bio-inspired composite structures derived from the moth model enable compatible stealth across the radar-infrared/visible light spectrum.

Although biomimetic models show promise for enhancing stealth materials, designing effective multispectral stealth systems remains challenging. Inspired by the antireflective microstructures of moths - including their compound eyes, villi, and wing microstructures - we develop a composite biomimetic model integrating multiple antireflective structures to achieve multispectral stealth across radar, infrared, and visible light bands. The carbonyl iron powder (CIP) composite with biomimetic grating-hole structures demonstrates effectively scatters incident microwaves while promoting surface wave …

Preclinical Evaluation of a Noncontact Simultaneous Monitoring Method for Respiration and Carotid Pulsation Using Impulse-Radio Ultra-Wideband Radar.

There has been the possibility for respiration and carotid pulsation to be simultaneously monitored from a distance using impulse-radio ultra-wideband (IR-UWB) radar. Therefore, we investigated the validity of simultaneous respiratory rates (RR), pulse rates (PR) and R-R interval measurement using IR-UWB radar. We included 19 patients with a normal sinus rhythm (NSR) and 14 patients with persistent atrial fibrillation (PeAF). The RR, PR, R-R interval and rhythm were obtained simultaneously from the right carotid artery area in a supine position and under normal breathing conditions using IR-UW…
