In post-traumatic brachial plexus lesions in adults, early repair will necessitate a variety of nerve grafting and nerve transfer procedures. In complete palsies, a graft is performed from a radicular stump, using intercostal nerve transfers, partial cross C7 transfer, and the distal spinal accessory nerve. This will provide elbow flexion and extension in 75% of cases, and shoulder abduction or rotation in 50% of cases. In the upper type palsies, ulnar-biceps transfer is the standard procedure. Grafting from a ruptured cervical root, when available, is performed to reanimate the shoulder. In C

Brachial plexus compressive neuropathy following the use of axillary crutches (crutch palsy) is a rare but well-recognized entity. Most reported cases involve the posterior cord of the brachial plexus in children and have resolved spontaneously within 8-12 weeks. We recently treated a 36-year-old man who was using axillary crutches for mobilization after a supracondylar femoral fracture. Bilateral posterior cord (predominantly radial nerve) compressive neuropathy subsequently developed, with lesser involvement of the ulnar and median nerves. The patient had little to no improvement clinically

Mutations in apoptosis-inducing factor mitochondrion-associated-1 (AIFM1) cause X-linked peripheral neuropathy (Cowchock syndrome, CMT4X); however, more recently a cerebellar presentation has been described. We describe a large Irish family with seven affected males. They presented with a variable age of onset, 18 months to 39 years of age. All developed variably present sensorineural deafness, peripheral neuropathy, cerebellar ataxia, and pyramidal involvement. In addition, three had colour vision deficiency. Scale for the assessment and rating of ataxia ranged 2 to 23/40, while Charcot-Marie

OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study was to describe an alternative method for the electrodiagnostic (EDX) evaluation of the sensory radial nerve (SRN).
METHODS: In this retrospective study, all patients from a French EDX center (November 2022-April 2023) for whom SNAP amplitudes of the same SRN were obtained through both a conventional and an alternative method were included. In the conventional method, the active recording electrode was placed at the base of the snuff box, whereas in the alternative method, it was placed 3-4 cm proximally on the lateral border of the radial bone. The SNAP ampl

PURPOSE: The close proximity of the radial nerve to the humerus poses a risk during upper arm surgery. Although the general course of the radial nerve is well-known, its exact position in relation to anatomical reference points remains poorly investigated. This study aimed to develop a standardized protocol for the sonographic and clinical identification of the radial nerve in the upper arm. The ultimate goal is to assist surgeons in avoiding iatrogenic radial nerve palsy.
METHODS: A total of 76 measurements were performed in 38 volunteers (both sides). Ultrasound measurements were performed

INTRODUCTION: Peripheral nerve injury due to animal bite is a rare phenomenon. Most animal bites are from dogs. Monkey bites constitute a common risk, second only to dog bites, among travelers. Peripheral nerve injuries may occur due to a combination of monkey's strong jaws and sharp long teeth penetrating deep into the soft tissues. Such injuries are associated with increased perineural fibrosis. Human amniotic membrane (HAM) wrap around the nerve repair site reduces fibrotic response, prevents adhesions and scar formation thereby improving outcome. We report a case of "High Radial nerve pals

CASE: Two patients sustained comminuted extra-articular distal humerus fractures. One patient was neurovascularly intact preoperatively. The other patient had a complete radial motor palsy with preserved sensation. Intraoperatively, both exhibited anatomic variants of the radial sensory nerve of the arm that pierced the triceps rather than branching from the distal third of the radial nerve proper, as is traditionally reported.
CONCLUSIONS: Although rare, variations in the radial nerve may exist about the distal humerus. Surgeons should be aware of these variations to avoid iatrogenic injury.

PURPOSE: Our goals were to carry out an anatomical description of the internal architecture of the supinator muscle in order to describe potentially compressive structures for the deep branch of the radial nerve (DBRN) and to establish reference landmarks for the surgical treatment of radial tunnel syndrome.
METHODS: Thirty upper limbs were dissected. The pennation angle of proximal and distal arcades of the supinator to the radial shaft axis was measured. Possible compressive structures of both superficial and deep heads of supinator were recorded. Proximal and distal arcades of the superfic

A 36-year-old man had a 6-year history of progressive left hand and finger extension weakness. Extensive electrophysiological studies showed only a partial motor conduction block along the left radial nerve at the mid-arm. Several intravenous immunoglobulin treatments were clinically successful. A 3-year follow-up did not show any clinical or electrophysiological involvement of other nerves. A monofocal motor neuropathy, as a variant of multifocal motor neuropathy, was diagnosed.

Lyme neuroborreliosis (LNB) typically presents as a painful radiculitis or a cranial mononeuropathy with lymphocytic meningitis (Bannwarth's syndrome). Isolated peripheral mononeuropathy or multiple mononeuropathy is less frequently recognised. A 58-year-old female with a background of IgA nephropathy and chronic kidney disease presented with a painful left ulnar neuropathy followed within 3 months by superficial radial neuropathy. Initial serum and cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) analysis were unremarkable; nerve conduction study was in keeping with a mononeuritis multiplex. A superficial radial ne…

The posterior interosseous nerve (PIN) is the terminal branch of the radial nerve. The symptoms of PIN palsy vary markedly according to its types. In this report, we present the case of a 61-years-old male patient with an unusual manifestation of non-traumatic novel type of PIN palsy. A complicated course was involved in the diagnosis of this disease. The operation was performed after verification of PIN palsy. Recovery of symptoms was observed in a follow-up conducted three years later. Additionally, the electromyography examination returned to normal.

INTRODUCTION: The incidence of radial nerve injury after humeral shaft fractures is on average 11.8% (Shao et al., J Bone Jt Surg Br 87(12):1647-1652, 2005) representing the most common peripheral nerve injury associated with long bone fractures (Korompilias et al., Injury, 2013). The purpose of this study was to analyze our current policy and long-term outcome, regarding surgically treated humeral shaft fractures in combination with radial nerve palsy.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: We retrospectively analyzed the data of patients with surgically treated humeral shaft fractures from 01/01/2003 to 28

BACKGROUND The aim of this study was to analyze the causes that lead to secondary damage of the radial nerve and to discuss the results of reconstructive treatment. MATERIAL AND METHODS The study group consisted of 33 patients treated for radial nerve palsy after humeral fractures. Patients were diagnosed based on clinical examinations, ultrasonography, electromyography, or nerve conduction velocity. During each operation, the location and type of nerve damage were analyzed. During the reconstructive treatment, neurolysis, direct neurorrhaphy, or reconstruction with a sural nerve graft was use

This paper examines a case of radial nerve palsy in a 13-year-old girl caused by nerve embedded in a humeral shaft fracture. An X-ray showed a mild angular-displaced humeral shaft fracture. Two weeks later, an intramedullary Ender nailing was performed. Because of brain injury due to traffic accident, the patient lost consciousness for one month. Once she regained consciousness, radial nerve palsy was discovered and closely observed. As the radial nerve palsy had not healed after five months, the radial nerve was explored and found to be interposed between fracture sites and totally entrapped

Because the use of arthroscopy has increased recently for the treatment of elbow lesions, reports of complications have become more common. Nerve injury after arthroscopic anterior capsular release is an extremely rare complication, with 4 reported cases worldwide. We usually use a sharp-tipped electrocautery device with a 0.5-mm diameter during arthroscopic capsular release. In this case, because the former was not prepared, we used a ball-tipped electrocautery device with a 3-mm diameter. Herein, we experienced a case of radial nerve palsy after arthroscopic anterior capsular release using a

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to determine whether the optic nerve is affected by thyroid eye disease (TED) before the development of dysthyroid optic neuropathy with diffusion-tensor imaging (DTI).
METHODS: Twenty TED patients and 20 controls were included. The mean, axial, and radial diffusivities and fractional anisotropy (FA) value were measured at the optic nerves in DTI. Extraocular muscle diameters were measured on computed tomography. The diffusivities and FA of the optic nerves were compared between TED and controls and between active and inactive stages of TED. The correlatio
