Immunohistochemical detection of 6-oxo-PGF1 alpha and PGE2 in radicular cysts.

Prostaglandin synthesis in the wall of radicular cysts was determined by immunohistochemistry and radiothinlayer chromatography. PGE2 is predominantly produced by plasma cells and histiocytic elements, whereas much less is synthesized by fibroblasts and endothelial cells as estimated using immunohistochemistry. 6-oxo-PGF1 alpha, however, was primarily found to be generated by endothelial cells and fibroblasts; only small amounts seem to be derived from histiocytic elements and plasma cells. The response of the cystic epithelium to anti-PGE2 and anti-6-oxo-PGF1 alpha antibodies was negative or …

Management of radicular cyst associated with primary teeth using decompression: a retrospective study.

BACKGROUND: Radicular cysts arising from primary teeth are rare. Enucleation and marsupialization or decompression are treatment approach to odontogenic cysts. Decompression known to achieve good results in various cysts is widely used in clinic. This study aims to evaluate the efficiency of decompression in reducing radicular cysts associated with primary teeth in children. METHODS: Cases of radicular cysts associated with primary teeth treated by decompression were reviewed in the present study. Clinical information and radiologic data of pre and post decompression were measured and analyze…

Differentiated Immunohistochemical Expression of Osteoclastogenic Markers in Radicular Cyst, Odontogenic Keratocyst, and Ameloblastoma.

The aim of this study was to investigate the osteoclastogenesis process by means of immunohistochemical markers for receptor activator of nuclear factor κB ligand (RANKL), osteoprotegerin (OPG), interleukin-6 (IL-6), and cathepsin K (CTSK) antigens in osteolytic lesions of maxillary bones. The sample consisted of 23 radicular cysts (RC), 25 odontogenic keratocysts (OKC), and 25 ameloblastomas (AM). RANKL was statistically higher in RC (49.6±15.2/53.7±18) and OKC (48.6±15.1/51.4±16.8) when compared with AM (37.2±12.5/36.4±13) in the epithelium and connective tissue. OPG was lower in OKC (34.8±1…

Differential diagnosis between a granuloma and radicular cyst: effectiveness of magnetic resonance imaging.

AIM: To investigate the diagnostic reliability and accuracy of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) to differentiate periapical lesions of endodontic origin and to compare the results with histopathological information. METHODOLOGY: The radiolucent periapical jaw lesions of 34 patients, which were surgically enucleated, were investigated by two radiologists using MRI, based on the same six criteria, to categorize the lesions as granulomas, radicular cysts or others. After apicoectomies, two oral pathologists (blinded to the radiologist's diagnoses) analysed all specimens by referring to seven spe…

Radicular cyst followed by incomplete pulp therapy in primary molar: a case report.

Radicular cysts are one of the most common odontogenic cyst of the jaws. However, those arising from primary teeth are rare. An 8-year-old boy reported to the Department of Pedodontics and Preventive Dentistry with the chief complaint of pain and swelling on the lower left primary molar tooth region. Radiographic examination revealed a well-defined radiolucency with continuous hyperostotic border. Considering the age of the child, size of lesion, and involvement of unerupted premolars; marsupialization was preferred as a conservative treatment of choice. The success of the treatment was eviden…

Carbonization of a radicular cyst using fiber-optic diode laser: a case report.

A female patient, 51 years old, complaint of painful swelling on the anatomical area of the upper left lateral incisor. The diagnosis of radicular cyst was confirmed histo-pathologically. Nowadays, radicular cysts may be treated using conventional root canal methods or surgical apicectomy. The possible soft-laser reaction to radicular cysts after contact application has not been investigated. We present an in vitro case of a diagnosed radicular cyst which carbonized after contact application of diode laser. The need for future clinical trials will be essential to prove the sensitivity of this …

Radicular cyst associated with a primary molar following pulp therapy: a case report.

A radicular cyst arising from the primary second molar and causing displacement of the permanent successor to the lower border of the mandible, with accompanying buccal expansion, was examined clinically and radiographically. Extraction of the primary molar and extirpation of the cyst led to uneventful healing. The primary molar had received pulp treatment with therapeutic agents approximately 1.5 years prior to the patient's first visit. The relationship between pulp treatment and rapid growth of the radicular cyst is discussed.

Profiles of cytokine expression in radicular cyst-lining epithelium examined by RT-PCR.

Levels of messenger RNA (mRNA) extracted from five samples of radicular cyst-lining epithelium were analyzed for cytokines, growth factors and epithelial cell growth-related receptors by RT-PCR. All five samples expressed IL-1alpha, -1beta, IL-6, IL-8, IL-11, TGF-beta1, PDGF-A and aFGF, and receptors for EGF (c-erbB), KGF, HGF (c-met) and IL-6. Some of the specimens expressed MIP-1alpha, RANTES, GM-CSF, M-CSF, TNF-alpha, PDGF-B and bFGF, but no expression of IL-2, IL-4, IFN-gamma, IGF-I, EGF and KGF was detected. These results indicate that radicular cyst-lining epithelium, which is considered…

Microsurgical management of radicular cyst using guided tissue regeneration technique: A case report.

BACKGROUND: Radicular cyst is a lesion of odontogenic origin that arises from epithelial remains due to periapical periodontitis caused by inflammatory reactions generated at the apex of affected teeth with infected or necrotic pulps. The therapeutic management of radicular cysts is controversial. There is only one case report of enucleation of a radicular cyst managed with microsurgery and apicoectomy, but without the use of the guided tissue regeneration (GTR) technique in the same surgical procedure. The present clinical case describes the management of a radicular cyst with microsurgical a…

Bacteriological findings in radicular cyst and keratocystic odontogenic tumour fluids from asymptomatic patients.

OBJECTIVE: In this study the potential presence of bacteria in radicular cyst (RC) and keratocystic odontogenic tumour(KCOT) fluids from clinically asymptomatic patients was investigated. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Cyst fluids were collected by needle aspiration from 16 patients with asymptomatic osteolytic lesions (10 RCs and 6 KCOTs) undergoing surgery. All samples were transferred into tubes containing pre-reduced transport medium, delivered to the microbiology laboratory and processed within 1h. The cysts, surgically enucleated, were sent for standard histopathological examination. Cyst fluid…

Histopathological findings of hemorrhagic ganglion cyst causing acute radicular pain: a case report.

Although juxtafacet cysts of the lumbar spine are being reported with increasing frequency, hemorrhage from a ganglion cyst is rare, and the pathophysiologic mechanism of the hemorrhage from the cyst is still unclear. A 75-year-old male presented with sudden radicular leg pain caused by hemorrhage from the ganglion cyst. Computed tomography revealed bony erosion of vertebral body and multiple punched-out lesions on facets. Magnetic resonance imaging showed the neural structure was compressed by a sharply delineating mass. Capsule and old hematoma with elastic consistency that extended to the e

Massive maxillary radicular cyst presenting as facial fracture and abscess, a case report.

Radicular cysts arise from non-vital teeth. They are inflammatory in nature and are the most common cystic lesion found in the jaw. We present a case of a massive maxillary radicular cyst in a 20 year-old man, diagnosed following an alleged assault and facial fracture. Subsequent abscess formation was initially thought to be infection secondary to haematoma due to fracture, but further investigation showed that it was to be due to a massive cyst.

Profiling of radicular cyst and odontogenic keratocyst cytokine production suggests common growth mechanisms.

The aim of this study was to compare the cytokine expression profiles of cyst fluids (CFs) and tissue culture supernatants (SUPs) from 7 radicular cysts (RCs) and 7 odontogenic keratocysts (OKCs) by using Human Cytokine Antibody Array to identify the specific cytokines involved in formation and expansion of RCs and OKCs, respectively. There were significant differences in relative expression levels of IL-1 beta, MCP1, MIP1 beta, FGF-9, GDNF, HGF, IGFBP-3, Ang, IP-10, MIF, OPG, and TGF-beta2 between RC-CF and OKC-CF (P < .05). On the other hand, the cytokine expression patterns of RC-SUP (HGF, …
