Virtual Imaging-Guided Harmonization of Chest X-Rays Using a Generative Adversarial Neural Network.

OBJECTIVE: To reduce variability in chest radiography (CXR) from acquisition and post-processing, and assess whether harmonization improves image quality and downstream diagnostic performance. METHODS: A generative adversarial network (GAN) was trained exclusively on virtual images produced by a Virtual Imaging Trial (VIT). The model maps non-harmonized CXRs to noise-free, unprocessed references using a dual U-Net with contrastive loss. Evaluation spanned virtual, physical-phantom, and clinical data using generic (GIQMs) and chest-specific (CIQMs) metrics. A phantom benchmark compared the met

A new 2.5D representation for lymph node detection using random sets of deep convolutional neural network observations.

Automated Lymph Node (LN) detection is an important clinical diagnostic task but very challenging due to the low contrast of surrounding structures in Computed Tomography (CT) and to their varying sizes, poses, shapes and sparsely distributed locations. State-of-the-art studies show the performance range of 52.9% sensitivity at 3.1 false-positives per volume (FP/vol.), or 60.9% at 6.1 FP/vol. for mediastinal LN, by one-shot boosting on 3D HAAR features. In this paper, we first operate a preliminary candidate generation stage, towards -100% sensitivity at the cost of high FP levels (-40 per pat

Hierarchical Deep Decision Tree-Based Network for Odontogenic Cystic Lesion Classification in CBCT Images.

Odontogenic cystic lesions (OCLs) are complex jaw abnormalities that require a precise diagnosis of the disease for treatment. Visual OCL diagnosis is commonly based on reviewing cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) to identify morpho-pathological features associated with specific lesion types in a hierarchical manner. Current state-of-the-art methods focus on extracting features from the image without any guidance beyond the lesion diagnosis, and do not fully leverage the hierarchical relationship between the lesion diagnosis and morphological features. In this study, we propose a hierarchica

CT Radiation Dose Reduction With Preserved Diagnostic Performance: How Far Have We Come Over 25 Years?

Concerns about the risk of radiation from CT have driven a spectrum of major advances in radiation dose reduction technology since the 2000s, including added beam filtration, dynamic z-axis collimation, automatic tube current modulation and tube potential selection, advanced iterative reconstruction, and deep learning-based reconstructions. The introduction of photon-counting detector CT further improved dose efficiency through electronic noise rejection, optimal photon-energy weighting, and high-resolution data acquisition. This Review summarizes key milestones and technologic innovations tha

A Two-Stage Lightweight Deep Learning Framework for Mass Detection and Segmentation in Mammograms Using YOLOv5 and Depthwise SegNet.

Ensuring strict medical data privacy standards while delivering efficient and accurate breast cancer segmentation is a critical challenge. This paper addresses this challenge by proposing a lightweight solution capable of running directly in the user's browser, ensuring that medical data never leave the user's computer. Our proposed solution consists of a two-stage model: the pre-trained nano YoloV5 variation handles the task of mass detection, while a lightweight neural network model of just 20k parameters and an inference time of 21 ms per image addresses the segmentation problem. This highl

Detection, Classification, and Segmentation of Rib Fractures From CT Data Using Deep Learning Models: A Review of Literature and Pooled Analysis.

PURPOSE: Trauma-induced rib fractures are common injuries. The gold standard for diagnosing rib fractures is computed tomography (CT), but the sensitivity in the acute setting is low, and interpreting CT slices is labor-intensive. This has led to the development of new diagnostic approaches leveraging deep learning (DL) models. This systematic review and pooled analysis aimed to compare the performance of DL models in the detection, segmentation, and classification of rib fractures based on CT scans. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A literature search was performed using various databases for studies

Multi-Modal and Multi-View Fusion Classifier for Craniosynostosis Diagnosis.

The diagnosis of craniosynostosis, a condition involving the premature fusion of cranial sutures in infants, is essential for ensuring timely treatment and optimal surgical outcomes. Current diagnostic approaches often require CT scans, which expose children to significant radiation risks. To address this, we present a novel deep learning-based model utilizing multi-view X-ray images for craniosynostosis detection. The proposed model integrates advanced multi-view fusion (MVF) and cross-attention mechanisms, effectively combining features from three X-ray views (AP, lateral right, lateral left

Enhancing breast cancer screening: Unveiling explainable cross-view contributions in dual-view mammography with Sparse Bipartite Graphs Attention Networks.

Medical imaging techniques like mammography enable early breast cancer detection and are part of regular screening programs. Typically, a mammogram exam involves two views of each breast, providing complementary information, but physicians rate the breast as a whole. Computer-Aided Diagnostic tools focus on detecting lesions in a single view, which is challenging due to high image resolution and varying scales of abnormalities. The projective nature of the two views and different acquisition protocols add complexity to dual-view analysis. To address these challenges, we propose a Graph Neural

Enhancing lesion detection in liver and kidney CT scans via lesion mask selection from two models: A main model and a model focused on small lesions.

Automated segmentation and detection of tumors in CT scans of the liver and kidney have a significant potential in assisting clinicians with cancer diagnosis and treatment planning. However, current approaches, including state-of-the-art deep learning ones, still face many challenges. Many tumors are not detected by these approaches when tested on public datasets for tumor detection and segmentation such as the Kidney Tumor Segmentation Challenge (KiTS) and the Liver tumor segmentation challenge (LiTS). False negative rates by lesion as high as 50% are commonly observed, and this rate is even

CT Quantification of Interstitial Lung Abnormality and Interstitial Lung Disease: From Technical Challenges to Future Directions.

Interstitial lung disease (ILD) encompasses a variety of lung disorders with varying degrees of inflammation or fibrosis, requiring a combination of clinical, imaging, and pathologic data for evaluation. Imaging is essential for the noninvasive diagnosis of the disease, as well as for assessing disease severity, monitoring its progression, and evaluating treatment response. However, traditional visual assessments of ILD with computed tomography (CT) suffer from reader variability. Automated quantitative CT offers a more objective approach by using computer-based analysis to consistently evalua

Two-stage lung nodule detection framework using enhanced UNet and convolutional LSTM networks in CT images.

Lung cancer is one of the leading causes of cancer deaths globally, and lung nodules are the primary indicators that aid in early detection. The computer-aided detection (CADe) system acts as a second reader, reducing the variability in lung cancer risk assessment across physicians. This work aims to improve the performance of CADe systems by developing high sensitive and resilient detection networks using deep learning. This paper proposes a novel CADe framework to detect nodules from CT scans using an enhanced UNet in conjunction with a pyramid dilated convolutional long short term memory (P

Automatic segmentation of the nasal cavity and paranasal sinuses from cone-beam CT images.

PURPOSE: A patient-specific upper airway model is important for clinical, education, and research applications. Cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) is used for imaging the upper airway but automatic segmentation is limited by noise and the complex anatomy. A multi-step level set segmentation scheme was developed for CBCT volumetric head scans to create a 3D model of the nasal cavity and paranasal sinuses. METHODS: Gaussian mixture model thresholding and morphological operators are first employed to automatically locate the region of interest and to initialize the active contour. Second, the

Quantitative computed tomography imaging of interstitial lung diseases.

PURPOSE: High-resolution chest computed tomography (HRCT) is essential in the characterization of interstitial lung disease. The HRCT features of some diseases can be diagnostic. Longitudinal monitoring with HRCT can assess progression of interstitial lung disease; however, subtle changes in the volume and character of abnormalities can be difficult to assess. Accuracy of diagnosis can be dependent on expertise and experience of the radiologist, pathologist, or clinician. Quantitative analysis of thoracic HRCT has the potential to determine the extent of disease reproducibly, classify the type
