Articular Findings on Chest Computed Tomography: An Algorithmic Approach for Radiologists.

Chest computed tomography (CT) is one of the most frequently performed imaging studies. Incidental osseous and articular findings are commonly encountered in chest CTs in daily practice. The spectrum of findings is broad, varying from benign to malignant, and interpretation of these incidental musculoskeletal findings could be challenging for radiologists. In this review, we provide a systematic algorithmic approach for the diagnosis of common articular findings seen on chest CT with recommendations for appropriate follow-up evaluation.

Transjugular intrahepatic portosystemic shunt (TIPS) complications: what diagnostic radiologists should know.

Transjugular intrahepatic portosystemic shunt (TIPS) is an effective therapy for portal hypertension complications and can successfully treat variceal bleeding and refractory ascites. Although TIPS is relatively safe, procedural- or shunt-related morbidity can reach 20%, and procedural complications have a fatality rate of 2%. Delayed recognition and treatment of TIPS complications can lead to life-threatening clinical scenarios. Complications can vary from stent migration or malpositioning to nontarget organ injury, TIPS dysfunction, encephalopathy, or liver failure. This review aims to outli

[Review of Cohort Studies Among Radiologists, Radiological Technologists, and Nuclear Workers].

A number of epidemiological studies have been conducted to investigate the health effects of low-dose radiation. The author reviewed epidemiological studies among radiologists, radiological technologists, and nuclear workers. Because the results of many epidemiological studies on these subjects have been published, and many studies have measured radiation doses, there is little uncertainty. In the studies among radiologists and radiological technologists, high risks for leukemia, skin cancer, and breast cancer were found in populations that began work before around 1950, but not seen such a te

Current concepts of spondylosis and posterior spinal motion preservation for radiologists.

Spinal fusion is performed to eliminate motion at a degenerated or unstable segment. However, this is associated with loss of motion at the fused levels and increased stress on adjacent levels. Motion-preserving implants have been designed in effort to mitigate the limitations of fusion. This review will focus on posterior spinal motion-preserving technologies. In the cervical spine, laminoplasty is a posterior motion-preserving procedure used in the management of myelopathy/cord compression. In the lumbar spine, motion-sparing systems include interspinous process devices (also referred to as

Influence of Mammography Volume on Radiologists' Performance: Results from BreastScreen Norway.

Background Several European screening mammography programs that use independent double reading with consensus recommend an annual minimum reading volume of 5000 mammograms per radiologist. This recommendation is based only on expert opinion, and the influence of reading volume on performance in such programs is unknown. Purpose To examine the influence of annual and cumulative reading volume on radiologists' reading performance for digital mammography in a screening program that uses independent double reading with consensus. Materials and Methods This retrospective study included data from di

[Specific characteristics of chest X‑ray in childhood : Basics for radiologists].

The radiographic technique of pediatric chest X‑rays is substantially different from that in adults. In nearly all cases ap/pa X‑rays are sufficient and lateral radiographs are rarely needed. In the first years of life the thymus may overshadow the heart, the great vessels and the lung hila. The most important anatomical structures essential for diagnosing pathological findings of the lungs and mediastinum are the trachea with the bifurcation and the main bronchi with the adjacent great vessels. For the assessment of distended lungs and intrathoracic consolidations, fundamental knowledge of th

Radiologists' interpretive skills in screening vs. diagnostic mammography: are they related?

PURPOSE: This study aims to determine whether radiologists who perform well in screening also perform well in interpreting diagnostic mammography. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We evaluated the accuracy of 468 radiologists interpreting 2,234,947 screening and 196,164 diagnostic mammograms. Adjusting for site, radiologist, and patient characteristics, we identified radiologists with performance in the highest tertile and compared to those with lower performance. RESULTS: A moderate correlation was noted for radiologists' accuracy when interpreting screening versus their accuracy on diagnostic examin

Osteoarthritis year 2011 in review: imaging in OA--a radiologists' perspective.

With major technological advances and application of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) to large longitudinal osteoarthritis (OA) studies the role of imaging has become increasingly important for OA research over the last years. Currently, radiography, MRI and ultrasound are the most established imaging tools applied in a research setting. MRI assessment of OA features can be morphologic, compositional and can be applied in non-loaded and loaded conditions. Morphologic assessment includes semiquantitative and quantitative analyses. Novel semiquantitative scoring methods for knee, hip and hand OA

Musculoskeletal complications of acromegaly: what radiologists should know about early manifestations.

The purpose of this article is to summarise the early musculoskeletal complications of acromegaly. Some of the early signs of acromegaly may be evaluated by the musculoskeletal radiologist. In the early stage of disease, peripheral nerve enlargement associated with carpal tunnel syndrome or cubital tunnel syndrome and thickening of retinacula, such as A1 pulley in trigger finger, represent the features that may be seen by radiologists and are worthy of an endocrinological evaluation. Due to the insidious nature of the disease, the diagnosis of acromegaly is significantly delayed. Few and nonsp

The Epididymis: An Ultrasound Primer-What the Radiologist Needs to Know.

The epididymis, a crucial component of the male reproductive system, plays a pivotal role in sperm maturation, transport, and storage. It can be affected by a diverse spectrum of pathologies, including congenital anomalies, infectious and inflammatory diseases, cystic and neoplastic lesions, and traumatic injuries. These conditions can present with overlapping clinical symptoms such as scrotal pain, swelling or infertility, making imaging essential for accurate diagnosis and appropriate management. Ultrasound is the primary imaging modality for evaluating epididymal abnormalities due to its hi

Imaging spectrum of atraumatic muscle disorders: a radiologist's guide.

Atraumatic muscle disorders comprise a very wide range of skeletal muscle diseases, including metabolic, inflammatory, autoimmune, infectious, ischemic, and neoplastic involvement of the muscles. Therefore, one must take clinical and laboratory data into consideration to elucidate the differential diagnoses, as well as the distribution of the muscle compromise along the body-whether isolated or distributed along the body in a symmetric or asymmetrical fashion. Assessment of muscular disorders often requires imaging investigation before image-guided biopsy or more invasive procedures; therefore

Osteopetrosis in the pediatric patient: what the radiologist needs to know.

Osteopetrosis describes several types of rare sclerosing bone dysplasias of varying clinical and radiographic severity. The classic autosomal dominant subtype emerges most often in adolescence but can present from infancy through adulthood. The autosomal recessive osteopetrosis, or "malignant infantile osteopetrosis," presents in infancy with a grimmer prognosis, though the autosomal dominant forms (often mislabeled as "benign") actually can have life-threatening consequences as well. Often osteopetrosis is detected due to skeletal findings on radiographs performed to evaluate injury or as an

Current update on the role of endoanal ultrasound: a primer for radiologists.

Endoanal ultrasound (EAUS) is a valuable imaging modality for the evaluation of anal and perianal pathologies. It provides detailed information about the anatomy and physiology of the anorectal region and has been used in pre-and post-operative settings of anorectal pathologies. EAUS is not only useful in the evaluation of benign pathologies but also in loco-regional staging of anal and rectal tumors. EAUS has several advantages over MRI, including reduced cost, better patient tolerance, and improved scope of application in patients with contraindications to MRI. Despite its benefits, EAUS is

Extraosseous Plasmacytomas: A Radiologist's Perspective-A Narrative Review of the Literature.

Extraosseous plasmacytomas (EPs) are rare neoplasms originating from plasma cells, often associated with multiple myeloma. EPs are classified into three subtypes: extramedullary myeloma, solitary extramedullary plasmacytoma (SEP), and multiple solitary plasmacytomas. They can manifest in various anatomical sites, including the lung, mediastinum, breast, liver, pancreas, stomach, mesentery, kidney, small and large bowel, testis, and soft tissue. Despite their rarity, EPs present a diagnostic challenge due to their non-specific imaging appearances, which can mimic other neoplastic and inflammato

MR imaging of the penis: What a radiologist needs to know!

Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) plays an important role in imaging of penile pathologies due to its excellent soft tissue resolution and multiplanar imaging capabilities. This imaging review describes the MRI protocols and anatomical considerations in penile pathologies. MRI not only serves as a complementary tool to ultrasound in evaluation of trauma, infections, inflammatory diseases, and malignancies, but is also used as the definitive imaging modality for evaluation of penile prosthesis and complex cases.

Nipple-sparing Mastectomy: What the Radiologist Should Know.

Nipple-sparing mastectomy (NSM) is increasingly offered to patients undergoing treatment of breast cancer and prophylaxis treatment for reduction of breast cancer risk. NSM is considered oncologically safe for appropriately selected patients and is associated with improved cosmetic outcomes and quality of life. Accepted indications for NSM have expanded in recent years, and currently only inflammatory breast cancer or malignancy involving the nipple is considered an absolute contraindication. Neoplasms close to and involving the nipple areolar complex are common, and cancer of the lactiferous
