MDMA (Ecstasy) precipitation of panic disorder.

The authors describe three patients whose panic disorder began during recreational use of MDMA (Ecstasy) and was subsequently complicated by agoraphobic avoidance that continued autonomously after cessation of the drug. Their panic disorder responded well to serotoninergic antidepressant drugs. Theoretical and practical implications are discussed.

Arrhythmogenic effects of acute electronic cigarette compared to tobacco cigarette smoking in people living with HIV.

The leading cause of death in people living with HIV (PLWH) is cardiovascular disease, and the high prevalence of tobacco cigarette (TC) smoking is a major contributor. Switching to electronic cigarettes (ECs) has been promoted as a harm reduction strategy. We sought to determine if acute EC compared to TC smoking had less harmful effects on arrhythmogenic risk factors including acute changes in hemodynamics, heart rate variability (HRV), and ventricular repolarization (VR). In PLWH who smoke, changes in hemodynamics, HRV, and VR were compared pre/post acutely using an EC, TC, or puffing on an

The Impact of Legalizing Recreational Cannabis on the Children of a Neighboring State.

OBJECTIVES: In the United States, cannabis is legal for adult recreational use in 24 states and Washington, DC. Unintentional pediatric cannabis exposures have increased in many states following legalization. We evaluated the relationship between recreational cannabis legalization and the rates of unintentional pediatric exposures in a neighboring state that had not undergone legalization. METHODS: We obtained cannabis exposure cases for children 0-12 years from the New Mexico Poison and Drug Information Center electronic database. Only deidentified patient data from closed-case exposure encou

Treatment of ketamine-associated cystitis with chondroitin sulphate.

Chronic cystitis associated with ketamine use is a growing problem among a young patient population who use the drug recreationally. Patients may present with symptoms such as urinary frequency, dysuria, urgency and haematuria in accident and emergency departments, GP surgeries, urology outpatient departments, drug rehabilitation or substance misuse units, genitourinary medicine clinics or continence services. Nurses in these areas therefore need to be aware of the symptoms associated with ketamine-associated bladder damage and be prepared to ask patients about recreational drug use and inform

Cardiovascular and pulmonary complications of recreational drugs: A pictorial review.

Recreational drug abuse constitutes a serious health problem worldwide. Consumption of cocaine, amphetamine-type stimulants, opioids and cannabis can lead to multiple acute and chronic cardiopulmonary complications, resulting in high morbidity and mortality. These complications may be first detected at imaging, since clinical presentation is usually non-specific. Cardiovascular complications include myocardial infarction, endocarditis, aortic dissection, infectious pseudoaneurysm, retained needle fragments, cardiomyopathy and pulmonary arterial hypertension. Pulmonary complications encompass p

Atherogenic Effects of Acute Electronic Cigarette Compared With Tobacco Cigarette Smoking in People Living With HIV: A Randomized Crossover Trial.

BACKGROUND: People living with HIV (PLWH) are disproportionately affected by tobacco-related health disparities. Concurrent recreational drug use is also more prevalent. Switching to electronic cigarettes (ECs) has been proposed as a harm reduction strategy. However, it remains unproven whether ECs are less atherogenic than tobacco cigarettes (TCs). METHODS AND RESULTS: PLWH who smoke TCs and met eligibility criteria were invited to enroll in our acute crossover trial (NCT04568395) comparing the effects of using an EC, a TC, and a straw control on different days on monocyte transendothelial m

Adverse experiences resulting in emergency medical treatment seeking following the use of lysergic acid diethylamide (LSD).

BACKGROUND: Recreational lysergic acid diethylamide (LSD) use is growing in popularity amid increasing research interest on psychedelics and their possible therapeutic potential yet; the potent psychotropic effects of LSD may result in adverse reactions and behaviour. AIMS: This study aimed to investigate the 12-month incidence and nature of LSD-related adverse experiences resulting in emergency medical treatment (EMT) seeking in an international sample of people reporting LSD use. METHODS: We use data from the 2017 Global Drug Survey - a large anonymous online survey on patterns of drug use

[From Adam to ecstacy; legal use of MDMA in the 1970s and 1980s].

MDMA is currently a controversial psychedelic in the Netherlands: it is banned under the Opium Act, but widely used as a recreational drug. According to the government, the normalization of MDMA must be combated, others argue in favour of legalization. Meanwhile, in recent years psychiatry has become interested in renewed therapeutic use of MDMA.<br/> AIM: To place the current discussion of MDMA in the context of recent history. What can we learn from the way MDMA was used in America and Western Europe in the period between the (re)discovery of the drug in the 1970s and its legal prohibition i

A 2025 Nationwide Cross-Sectional Survey on Public Attitudes Toward the Legalization and Depenalization of Recreational Cannabis in Poland.

The legalization and depenalization of recreational cannabis is increasingly debated in Europe, including in Poland, where medical cannabis was legalized in 2017. Despite ongoing public discourse, up-to-date data on public attitudes toward recreational cannabis legalization remain limited. This study aimed to characterize public attitudes toward the legalization and depenalization of recreational cannabis in Poland. This retrospective, cross-sectional, computer-assisted web interviewing-based nationwide survey was conducted between July 11 and 13, 2025, using an online questionnaire completed

The prevalence and natural history of urinary symptoms among recreational ketamine users.

UNLABELLED: Study Type--Symptom prevalence (prospective cohort) Level of Evidence 1b. What's known on the subject? and What does the study add? Case series have described lower urinary tract symptoms associated with ketamine use including severe pain, frequency, haematuria and dysuria. Little is known regarding the frequency of symptoms, relationship of symptoms with dose and frequency of use and natural history of symptoms once the ketamine user has stopped. This study describes the prevalence of ketamine use in a population of recreational drug users in a dance music setting. It shows a dose

The resurgence of synthetic cannabinoid receptor agonists as adulterants in the Era of Cannabis legalization: Lessons from prior epidemics and clinical implications.

Momentum towards legalization of medical and recreational cannabis drives a convergence between natural cannabinoids and their synthetic counterparts, creating new clinical challenges in a second wave of exposures. This review critically examines the emerging challenges posed by synthetic cannabinoid receptor agonists (SCRAs) and semi-synthetic cannabinoids, emphasizing their clinical implications. SCRAs are potent full agonist activity that have been identified as adulterants in several recreational substances, including cannabis and opioids. Adulteration often leads to unpredictable clinical

Why do Americans use marijuana?

BACKGROUND: Marijuana is the most commonly used illicit drug in the United States; yet, little is known about why adults use it. We examined the prevalence of past-month marijuana use by users' reasons for use-medical, recreational, and both-and identified correlates of each group. METHODS: Data from 20 states, which participated in the 2017-2019 Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System and fielded the marijuana use module, and multinomial logistic regression analysis were used to identify risk factors for past-month marijuana use by reason for use. User profiles were developed to illustrat

Assessment of alcohol and other drug use behaviors in health professions students.

Alcohol and other drug (AOD) use behaviors of health professions students (HPS) were assessed by surveying both university-based HPS and other nursing programs in a Midwestern state in 1999. Response was 2,646 (56.4%) of surveyed students. Family history of alcohol-related and drug-related problems were reported by 39.8% and 13.9%, respectively, with 42.6% of respondents reporting one or both. Among nursing respondents, 48.1%, 19.2% and 51.1%, respectively, reported family problems with alcohol, drugs, or one or both. Past-year alcohol use was comparable to undergraduate college students (UCS)

The clinical toxicology of ketamine.

INTRODUCTION: Ketamine is a pharmaceutical drug possessing both analgesic and anaesthetic properties. As an anaesthetic, it induces anaesthesia by producing analgesia with a state of altered consciousness while maintaining airway tone, respiratory drive, and hemodynamic stability. At lower doses, it has psychoactive properties and has gained popularity as a recreational drug. OBJECTIVES: To review the epidemiology, mechanisms of toxicity, pharmacokinetics, clinical features, diagnosis and management of ketamine toxicity. METHODS: Both OVID MEDLINE (January 1950-April 2023) and Web of Science

Nephrotoxicity of recreational party drugs.

N-benzylpiperazine (BZP) is the active ingredient in recreational 'party' pills with a stimulant, euphoric mechanism of action akin to that of 3,4-methylenedioxymethamphetamine (MDMA or ecstasy). Many people (ab)use BZP-based party pills usually without any significant toxic effects. However, nephrotoxicity secondary to hyperthermia and rhabdomyolysis has been reported. Another serious renal-related side-effect is hyponatraemia with acute cerebral oedema. There is also evidence that these agents may have a specific toxic effect producing acute kidney injury. Thus, acute kidney injury either di

[Recreative drug use and cardiovascular disease].

Widely spread, and continuously increasing, recreational drug use in general population has been associated with cardiovascular events, as illustrated by clinical studies and supported by a pathophysiological rationale. Understanding the cardiovascular effects of drugs, screening, and secondary prevention are crucial components in the management of those patients in cardiology.

Making a medicine out of MDMA.

From its first use 3,4,-methylenedioxymethamphetamine (MDMA) has been recognised as a drug with therapeutic potential. Research on its clinical utility stopped when it entered the recreational drug scene but has slowly resurrected in the past decade. Currently there is enough evidence for MDMA to be removed from its Schedule 1 status of 'no medical use' and moved into Schedule 2 (alongside other misused but useful medicines such as heroin and amphetamine). Such a regulatory move would liberate its use as a medicine for patients experiencing severe mental illnesses such as treatment-resistant p

Microdosing psychedelics: What, why, when, and how often? Insights from an international survey of people who use psychedelics.

BACKGROUND: The interest in microdosing psychedelics continues to grow within academic and recreational contexts. However, microdosing practices have changed over time, and warrants examination of use patterns within a large, global sample of consumers. METHODS: The Global Psychedelic Survey 2025 (GPS 2025) was an online, anonymous, cross-sectional survey conducted from May 1-23, 2025. The survey was available in 19 languages and inquired about a wide range of topics surrounding psychedelic use. This manuscript focuses on the primary outcomes for the microdosing component of the survey, exami
