The Effect of Allergic Conjunctivitis on Refractive Error in the Pediatric Population.

Introduction Refractive error is one of the most common causes of visual impairment in the world, negatively affecting a patient's quality of life, economic opportunities and more. Although numerous studies have explored the impact of severe ocular allergies on refractive error, there is limited research on how relatively mild forms of ocular allergies may affect vision. This study aims to assess the impact of allergic conjunctivitis, a milder and more common ocular allergy, on the development and progression of refractive error in the pediatric population. Methods This was a retrospective stu

A metric-based image-formation model explains the improvement in subjective refraction using temporal defocus waves.

SIGNIFICANCE: Direct subjective refraction (DSR) is a novel method for refractive error measurements that uses temporal changes in defocus and a flicker minimization task. The computational models developed here are a framework for improving this clinical method. PURPOSE: This study aimed to model the measurement of refractive error with the DSR method, which uses rapid changes in optical power and a bichromatic (red/blue) stimulus. METHODS: The polychromatic point spread function of the eye was used to simulate the retinal image projected in DSR method, and an image quality (IQ) metric was

Dioptric power and refractive behaviour: a review of methods and applications.

Myopia is a global healthcare concern and effective analyses of dioptric power are important in evaluating potential treatments involving surgery, orthokeratology, drugs such as low-dose (0.05%) atropine and gene therapy. This paper considers issues of concern when analysing refractive state such as data normality, transformations, outliers and anisometropia. A brief review of methods for analysing and representing dioptric power is included but the emphasis is on the optimal approach to understanding refractive state (and its variation) in addressing pertinent clinical and research questions.

The Glenn A. Fry Award Lecture 2011: Peripheral optics of the human eye.

There has been a low level of interest in peripheral aberrations and corresponding image quality for over 200 years. Most work have been concerned with the second-order aberrations of defocus and astigmatism that can be corrected with conventional lenses. Studies have found high levels of aberration, often amounting to several dioptres, even in eyes with only small central defocus and astigmatism. My investigations have contributed to understanding shape changes in the eye with increases in myopia, changes in eye optics with ageing, and how surgical interventions intended to correct central re
