The impact of social variables in preclinical models of cocaine abuse.

At present, there are no US Food and Drug Administration-approved treatments for cocaine use disorders. One consideration for this lack of treatment efficacy stems from the appropriate use of animal models. The premise of this commentary is that social behavior needs to be incorporated in animal models of cocaine use disorder. The goal of this commentary is to describe some of the strengths and limitations of recent preclinical animal models of cocaine abuse which have incorporated social behavior. There are many ways to include social variables into preclinical research, and the study design

The impact of free healthcare on women's capability: A qualitative study in rural Burkina Faso.

In March 2006, the government of Burkina Faso implemented an 80% subsidy for emergency obstetric and neonatal care (EmONC). To complement this subsidy, an NGO decided to cover the remaining 20% in two districts of the country, making EmONC completely free for women there. In addition, the NGO instituted fee exemptions for children under five years of age in those two districts. We conducted a qualitative study in 2011 to examine the impact of these free healthcare interventions on women's capability. We conducted semi-structured interviews with 40 women, 16 members of health centre management

Descriptive analysis of multiple response topographies of challenging behavior across two settings.

Time-based lag sequential analyses were conducted on 23 topographies of challenging behavior shown by five young people with severe mental retardation across two settings. Potential behavioural functions were identified for 21 of the 23 behaviors. Responses classes, including two or more distinct behaviors, were identified for four of the five participants. Two participants showed evidence of two functionally distinct response classes; for one person each response class included both self-injurious and stereotypic behaviors. For 9 of the 11 behaviors for which data were available, the hypothes

Neuroinflammatory Response in Reward-Associated Psychostimulants and Opioids: A Review.

Substance abuse is one of the significant problems in social and public health worldwide. Vast numbers of evidence illustrate that motivational and reinforcing impacts of addictive drugs are primarily attributed to their ability to change dopamine signaling in the reward circuit. However, the roles of classic neurotransmitters, especially dopamine and neuromodulators, monoamines, and neuropeptides, in reinforcing characteristics of abused drugs have been extensively investigated. It has recently been revealed that central immune signaling includes cascades of chemokines and proinflammatory cyt

Social exchange theory tenets and the employment of persons with disabilities in the Western Cape, South Africa.

BACKGROUND: Employment of persons with disabilities (PWDs) in South Africa's public sector remains persistently low despite progressive legislative frameworks. This reflects enduring structural, organisational and attitudinal barriers that limit meaningful inclusion, particularly at a provincial level. Compliance-driven approaches have proven insufficient in addressing the organisational dynamics shaping inclusion. This study is grounded in the social model of disability and applies social exchange theory (SET) to examine how perceptions of costs, benefits and reciprocity influence employment

The current sociocultural background of eating disorders.

Eating disorders (EDs) are complex phenomena that are partly influenced by sociocultural factors. The thin body ideal of Western civilization, disseminated by mass media and reinforced by the fashion industry, plays a significant role. In this cultural environment, the social perception of the human body has undergone a change.

From praise to prejudice: How positive stereotypes reinforce antisemitism.

Antisemitism-defined as prejudice and hostility toward Jews-is traditionally studied by examining explicit negative stereotypes and historical discriminatory actions against Jewish communities. However, this article explores an often overlooked and understudied dimension: how positive stereotypes about Jewish people paradoxically reinforce antisemitism and contribute to their marginalization. While negative stereotypes about Jews are widely recognized as harmful and unwelcomed, positive stereotypes-such as perception of high intelligence and financial achievements-are frequently misunderstood

This Is America: Systemic Racism and Health Inequities Amidst the COVID-19 Pandemic.

The Coronavirus 2019 (COVID-19) continues to devastate the world and the United States remains number one of reported COVID-19 cases and deaths. Research demonstrates that Blacks and Hispanics in the United States are disproportionately impacted by COVID-19, especially among highly marginalized people at the intersection of immigration and incarceration. Social distancing is a privilege and contact tracing is a deterrent for historically oppressed populations. Public health professionals have attempted a multicausal approach to prevent the spread of infectious diseases, but they have been unsu

[Psychoanalytic study of social withdrawal: grandiose narcissism and passive aggression due to insufficient maternal containing in childhood].

Two different types of pathology can cause social withdrawal: the narcissistic--schizoid personality organization (NSPO) type and the mild Asperger's syndrome (mild developmental disorders) type. Only the former type can be treated by psychoanalytic psychotherapy. In the childhood of both types, one may find traumatic family environments which will result in social withdrawal (Hikikomori). In the infancy of the NSPO type, the mother fails to function as a sufficient container of the child's emotion, which encourages formation of a schizoid personality organization i.e. the psychic withdrawal (

The Role of Auditory Features Within Slot-Themed Social Casino Games and Online Slot Machine Games.

Over the last few years playing social casino games has become a popular entertainment activity. Social casino games are offered via social media platforms and mobile apps and resemble gambling activities. However, social casino games are not classified as gambling as they can be played for free, outcomes may not be determined by chance, and players receive no monetary payouts. Social casino games appear to be somewhat similar to online gambling activities in terms of their visual and auditory features, but to date little research has investigated the cross over between these games. This study

Supporting Trauma Awareness and Nurturing Children's Environments (STANCE): Findings from a Multilevel Community Intervention.

Young children in early childhood education (ECE) settings frequently exhibit social-emotional challenges which can interfere with learning and long-term development. Supporting Trauma Awareness and Nurturing Children's Environments (STANCE) is a multilevel intervention designed to support teachers and caregivers in promoting young children's social-emotional development through evidence-based strategies. The objective of this paper is to describe the effectiveness of this intervention on child and parent outcomes in a rural, primarily Latine community. A hybrid type 2 effectiveness-implementa

Dissecting how psychopathic traits are linked to learning in different contexts: A multilevel computational and electrophysiological approach.

Previous studies suggest that elevated psychopathic traits, linked to social norm violations and personal gain-seeking, may be caused by impairments in associative learning. Recent advances in computational modelling offer insight into the unobservable processes that are thought to underly associative learning. Using such a model, the present study investigated the associations between psychopathic traits in a nonoffender sample and the cognitive computations underlying adaptive behavior during associative learning. We also investigated the potential engagement of adaptive control processes by

Between shame, control, and survival: a grounded theory study of eating disorders among young Chinese women.

BACKGROUND: Eating disorders (EDs) among young Chinese women are shaped by sociocultural norms and moralized expectations around thinness and emotional restraint, yet theory grounded in local experiences remains limited. METHOD: Using constructivist grounded theory, we conducted semi-structured interviews with 19 women with current or past ED experiences. Data were analyzed iteratively (open-focused-theoretical coding) with constant comparison, sending analytic memos, and team debriefing to build an explanatory model. RESULTS: Four interrelated themes were identified: (1) risk background, in

The Youth Physical Activity Promotion Model in Spain and Chile: Comparison of Psychological and Social Variables.

The Youth Physical Activity Promotion Model (Welk, 1999) has provided a specific framework to understand children's and adolescents' physical activity behavior. The objectives were (1) to analyze whether the data collected in Chilean and Spanish adolescents fit the proposed model and (2) to analyze the countries' differences (Spain vs. Chile) in enabling, predisposing, and reinforcing as well as the demographic factors that influence physical activity. The sample comprised 2318 adolescents from Spain (Mage = 14.5, SD = 1.36; 51.9% females) and 734 from Chile (Mage = 14.7, SD = 1.47; 54.2% fema

Social interaction anxiety and the discounting of positive interpersonal events.

BACKGROUND: Recent research has indicated that individuals with social interaction anxiety make biased interpretations of positive social interactions, with greater general apprehension in response to such events and more negative predictions about the future. There has also been some preliminary evidence for a second facet of interpretation bias, namely a failure to accept others' positive reactions at face value, but this has so far not been adequately studied. METHOD: The present study developed a new measure of this "discounting" dimension and utilized a nonclinical sample of undergraduat

Behind the 'Social mask': a phenomenological study of loneliness and social disconnection in women with Eating disorders.

Eating disorders (EDs) are chronic psychiatric conditions characterized by significant impairments in psychosocial functioning. This study utilizes an interpretative phenomenological analysis (IPA) to explore the lived experiences of social functioning and loneliness among women diagnosed with Eating Disorders (n = 8). Semi-structured interviews focused on early interpersonal patterns, experiences of social interactions, and the role of social support in recovery. Four superordinate themes emerged: Roots of Impaired Social Functioning, highlighting adverse childhood experiences; The Worsening

A vasopressin gate transforms social distress into caregiving.

Another individual's distress can provoke withdrawal and avoidance behaviors, yet, in social species, it can also motivate approach and caregiving behavior. In this issue, Geng et al. identified a vasopressin-sensitive neuronal circuit that converts distress signals from a cagemate into caregiving-like behavior in mice. Using fiber photometry, electrophysiological recordings, and optogenetic activation to dissect this circuit, they showed that vasopressin neurons in the paraventricular hypothalamus recruit vasopressin 1a receptor-expressing (V1aR-expressing) neurons in the medial central amygd

An electrophysiological analysis of coaching in Blackjack.

Recent research has demonstrated that a negative deflection in the event-related potential (ERP) that is usually elicited by errors, negative performance feedback, and monetary losses, and which has been associated with response monitoring and reinforcement learning, is also present when we observe others. In the present study we aimed to extend these findings to the domain of coaching behavior. In many contexts of human social life, advice is given by experts to novices, e.g., teachers or parents to scholars or children. However, their advice is sometimes rejected. Here we show that a rejecti

Retrospective analyses of additional services for methadone maintenance patients.

We report on the 6-month outcome of a retrospective analysis of additional treatment services for patients entering a methadone maintenance program who transferred from community methadone treatment programs (n = 83) or entered off the street (n = 83) not currently on methadone. Patients were participating in a clinical treatment trial examining the effectiveness of Community Reinforcement Approach and Relapse Prevention. Patients in the methadone transfer group were using less heroin at intake than patients newly initiated onto methadone and both groups improved from additional treatment serv

An exploration of social circles and prescription drug abuse through Twitter.

BACKGROUND: Prescription drug abuse has become a major public health problem. Relationships and social context are important contributing factors. Social media provides online channels for people to build relationships that may influence attitudes and behaviors. OBJECTIVE: To determine whether people who show signs of prescription drug abuse connect online with others who reinforce this behavior, and to observe the conversation and engagement of these networks with regard to prescription drug abuse. METHODS: Twitter statuses mentioning prescription drugs were collected from November 2011 to
