Biocompatibility of resin-modified filling materials.

Increasing numbers of resin-based dental restorations have been placed over the past decade. During this same period, the public interest in the local and especially systemic adverse effects caused by dental materials has increased significantly. It has been found that each resin-based material releases several components into the oral environment. In particular, the comonomer, triethyleneglycol di-methacrylate (TEGDMA), and the 'hydrophilic' monomer, 2-hydroxy-ethyl-methacrylate (HEMA), are leached out from various composite resins and 'adhesive' materials (e.g., resin-modified glass-ionomer

Widespread mineralization of soft-bodied insects in Cretaceous amber.

Fossilized tree resin, or amber, commonly contains fossils of animals, plants and microorganisms. These inclusions have generally been interpreted as hollow moulds or mummified remains coated or filled with carbonaceous material. Here, we provide the first report of calcified and silicified insects in amber from the mid-Cretaceous Kachin (Burmese) amber. Data from light microscopy, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy-dispersive and wavelength-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX and WDX), X-ray micro-computed tomography (Micro-CT) and Raman spectroscopy show that these Kachin fossils owe

Effects of Cuspal Inclination and Luting Agent on Fracture Load Values in Composite Resin CAD/CAM Crowns.

The purpose of this study was to evaluate whether change in cuspal inclination influences the fracture load values of composite resin computer-aided design/computer-aided manufacturing (CAD/CAM) crowns. Abutment teeth and CAD/CAM crowns were prepared as they would be for treating a mandibular first premolar with two cusps. The CAD/CAM crowns were designed so that 1) the principal stress lines would be radially distributed from the two points of contact with the indenter to the occlusal area of the abutment (Type I), or 2) the principal stress lines would pass outside the occlusal area of the a

Tissue response to allergenic leachables from dental materials.

In addition to toxic reactions to dental materials, some individuals may develop or exhibit hypersensitivity reactions to leachable components. An experimental model combining the guinea pig maximization test for induction of hypersensitivity and the subcutaneous implantation of dental cements is described. Guinea pigs immunized with AH 26, an epoxy-bisphenol resin, showed an increased tissue response to AH26 implants. Guinea pigs immunized with zinc oxide-eugenol did not show a similarly increased response, possibly because of an anti-inflammatory effect of eugenol. The experimental model may

Perceived side effects of biomaterials in prosthetic dentistry.

The present questionnaire survey of side effects of biomaterials in prosthodontics had a response rate of 64%. There were occupational health problems associated with a variety of dental materials, especially acrylic resins, eugenol-containing materials, and elastomer impression materials. Most reactions were mild to moderate dematoses of the fingers or hands, but one prosthodontist had to cease practice due to a severe allergic reaction to acrylic resin materials. Of the respondents, 8% had experienced reactions to latex gloves. Nondermatologic reactions seemed to be transient, affecting the

Influence of different transitional restorations on the fracture resistance of premolar teeth.

Controversy exists over the most favorable material and type of restoration to be used to transitionally restore teeth destined to be crowned. This in vitro study uses fracture resistance testing to compare eight different transitional restorations in maxillary premolars. Ninety sound maxillary premolars were randomly selected and allocated to nine groups, each comprising 10 teeth. One group remained unrestored and was used as the control. Teeth in the remaining groups were prepared to a standard cavity form using: a copy milling process removing the palatal cusp. Restorations were placed usin

Clinical guidelines for posterior semidirect composite resin restorations: a case report with a 17-month follow-up.

Patients are always looking for conservative, esthetic, and long-lasting dental restorations, and the technique used directly influences the longevity of the treatment. The location of the restoration in the mouth and the extent of the decay influence the treatment choice. The larger the dimensions of the cavity preparation, the greater the difficulties in restoring the tooth using direct techniques. The semidirect technique, when indicated, can achieve satisfactory results. It is a relatively easy procedure, consisting of tooth preparation to receive an indirect restoration, fabrication of an

Conservative treatment of a horizontal root fracture at the bone margin of a mandibular central incisor: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Root fractures occurring close to the bone margin have a poor prognosis. Although conservative treatment is preferred, it presents considerable challenges. This report describes the successful use of two types of mineral trioxide aggregate materials for conservative treatment of horizontal cervical root fractures. CASE PRESENTATION: A 25-year-old Japanese woman experienced root fractures of the mandibular central incisor due to trauma. At the initial visit, the crown of the tooth on the labial side was fractured above the gingival margin, and the root on the lingual side was fract

Artificial caries around restorations in roots.

An artificial caries technique was used to produce caries-like lesions in the cavity walls adjacent to microfilled resin restorations with and without dentin bonding agent, and glass-ionomer cement restorations, in the roots of extracted teeth. The lesions had histological characteristics similar to those of natural lesions and to those of the lesions produced by other experimental methods. The zonal pattern of the lesions was examined by means of polarized light microscopy and microradiography, and the depth of the lesions was measured for assessment of the microleakage around the restoration
