A third branchial pouch cyst presenting as stridor in a child.

We present a rare case of a third branchial pouch cyst in an 18-month-old child, presenting with stridor and a lateral cervical cystic mass. Differences in the anatomical course of third and fourth branchial cysts, and histological differences between branchial pouch and branchial cleft cysts are discussed.

Neural classification of lung sounds using wavelet coefficients.

Electronic auscultation is an efficient technique to evaluate the condition of respiratory system using lung sounds. As lung sound signals are non-stationary, the conventional method of frequency analysis is not highly successful in diagnostic classification. This paper deals with a novel method of analysis of lung sound signals using wavelet transform, and classification using artificial neural network (ANN). Lung sound signals were decomposed into the frequency subbands using wavelet transform and a set of statistical features was extracted from the subbands to represent the distribution of

Exploratory Assessment of Pulsed-Wave Doppler Representations of Lung Sounds Using Deep Learning: An In-Vitro Phantom Study.

The increasing availability of portable ultrasound systems motivates exploration of novel approaches to respiratory signal assessment. In this in-vitro study, we investigate whether pulsed-wave (PW) Doppler ultrasound can capture structured spectral patterns from replayed lung sound recordings. Digitized respiratory sounds were replayed through a tissue-mimicking ultrasound phantom, generating 1,478 PW Doppler spectral images from recordings associated with healthy subjects and several externally labeled disease categories. Exploratory classification experiments using a ResNet-18 architecture

Effect of Pompage on Vocal and Respiratory Measurements from Female Teachers: A Randomized Clinical Trial.

INTRODUCTION: Teachers stand out among occupational groups due to their contribution to modern societies, and their voice is the main form of interaction. OBJECTIVE: The aim of the study was to verify the changes in vocal and respiratory measurements from teachers with vocal and musculoskeletal complaints and with normal larynx after applying a musculoskeletal manipulation protocol of myofascial release using pompage. METHODS: Controlled and randomized clinical trial with 56 participants: 28 teachers in the study group and 28 teachers in the control group. Anamnesis, videolaryngoscopy, heari

Respiratory Disease Detection: A Systematic Review of AI-Based Approaches, from Audio and Visual Unimodal Methods to Multimodal Integration.

Background: Respiratory diseases (RDs), including asthma, COVID-19, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), and pneumonia, remain a major global health challenge, contributing substantially to global morbidity and mortality. Conventional diagnosis relies heavily on clinicians' expertise to interpret respiratory sounds and radiographic images, a process that can be subjective, time-consuming, and prone to inter-observer variability. Recent advances in artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) have enabled automated diagnostic approaches that can improve the efficiency, consis

Tracheal Sound Analysis.

Tracheal sound sensors provide multiple respiratory signals that are valuable for studying upper airway characteristics. This chapter reviews the original work and ongoing research on tracheal sound analysis in relation to upper airway obstruction during sleep. Past and current research suggest that being associated with other sleep study recording sensors and advanced signal processing techniques, tracheal sound analysis can extensively contribute to the diagnosis and assessment of sleep-disordered breathing.

The neuromuscular control of birdsong.

Birdsong requires complex learned motor skills involving the coordination of respiratory, vocal organ and craniomandibular muscle groups. Recent studies have added to our understanding of how these vocal subsystems function and interact during song production. The respiratory rhythm determines the temporal pattern of song. Sound is produced during expiration and each syllable is typically followed by a small inspiration, except at the highest syllable repetition rates when a pattern of pulsatile expiration is used. Both expiration and inspiration are active processes. The oscine vocal organ, t

Nasopharyngeal aspirate cytokine levels 1 yr after severe respiratory syncytial virus infection.

Respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) infection is an important cause of recurrent wheezing in infants. Nevertheless, the link between RSV infection and wheezing has yet to be elucidated at the molecular level. Here, we present a preliminary study on the evolution of the immune response in the respiratory tract at long-term after RSV infection. Twenty-seven immune mediators were profiled in nasopharyngeal aspirates (NPAs) obtained from 20 children hospitalized due to a severe infection by RSV at discharge from hospital and again 1 yr later. The same mediators were profiled in parallel in NPAs from

Infectious triggers of pediatric asthma.

Respiratory infections can cause wheezing illnesses in children of all ages and also can influence the causation and disease activity of asthma. For years it has been recognized that respiratory syncytial virus infections often produce the first episode of wheezing in children who go on to develop chronic asthma. More recently, it has been proposed that repeated infections with other common childhood viral pathogens might help the immune system develop in such a way as to prevent the onset of allergic diseases and possibly asthma. In addition to the effects of viral infections, infections with

Outcome of wheezing in early childhood.

UNLABELLED: In Acta Paediatrica 50 y ago, Boesen published a follow-up of children with "asthmatic bronchitis". Recent reinvestigations of children hospitalized because of wheezing in early childhood are remarkably consistent with Boesen's observations. CONCLUSION: Young children admitted to hospital because of wheezing have a clearly increased risk of subsequent asthma. Recent studies confirm Boesen's observations of the prognostic importance of eosinophilia and an inverse relation between age at admission with wheezing and risk of subsequent asthma. Allergy or atopic dermatitis is predictiv

[Respiratory failure after nebulized terbutaline treatment in severely wheezy infants: report of three cases].

Subjective clinical observations have suggested that nebulized bronchodilators are helpful in the treatment of some wheezy infants. Although the role of beta 2-agonists in the management of acute asthma in infants and very young children remains controversial, the use of beta 2-adrenergic agents in this age group has been widespread. beta 2-agonists nebulization continues to be the first-line treatment for acute attack of asthma, irrespective of age, in some institutes, but their uses are not without side effect especially in young wheezy infants. We report three cases of respiratory failure o

Non-organic stridor in children.

A 4.75-year-old male presented with several episodes of expiratory stridor leading, on one occasion, to a respiratory arrest and intubation. A detailed evaluation emphasizing physiological and anatomical studies revealed no organic basis for the patient's upper airway obstruction. Emphasis is placed on one method found to be helpful in the differentiation of an organic versus a psychogenic type of respiratory disorder. Recognition of functional airway obstruction in children may prevent inappropriate therapy and allow proper psychiatric intervention.

Producing song: the vocal apparatus.

In order to achieve the goal of understanding the neurobiology of birdsong, it is necessary to understand the peripheral mechanisms by which song is produced. This paper reviews recent advances in the understanding of syringeal and respiratory motor control and how birds utilize these systems to create their species-typical sounds. Songbirds have a relatively homogeneous duplex vocal organ in which sound is generated by oscillation of a pair of thickened labia on either side of the syrinx. Multiple pairs of syringeal muscles provide flexible, independent control of sound frequency and amplitud

Piecemeal endoscopic polypoidectomy for the management of a canine pharyngeal hemangiosarcoma.

A 7-year-old castrated male Maltese dog was presented for increased respiratory sounds, inability to bark, dysphagia, and hyporexia. Radiographs revealed an ovoid, opaque mass in the caudal nasopharynx. An airway examination and computed tomography scan were followed by endoscopic polypoidectomy. The mass was a hemangiosarcoma, and the patient survived > 13 months.
