Synaptic mechanisms of adaptation and sensitization in the retina.

Sensory systems continually adjust the way stimuli are processed. What are the circuit mechanisms underlying this plasticity? We investigated how synapses in the retina of zebrafish adjust to changes in the temporal contrast of a visual stimulus by imaging activity in vivo. Following an increase in contrast, bipolar cell synapses with strong initial responses depressed, whereas synapses with weak initial responses facilitated. Depression and facilitation predominated in different strata of the inner retina, where bipolar cell output was anticorrelated with the activity of amacrine cell synapse…

An analog silicon retina with multichip configuration.

The neuromorphic silicon retina is a novel analog very large scale integrated circuit that emulates the structure and the function of the retinal neuronal circuit. We fabricated a neuromorphic silicon retina, in which sample/hold circuits were embedded to generate fluctuation-suppressed outputs in the previous study [1]. The applications of this silicon retina, however, are limited because of a low spatial resolution and computational variability. In this paper, we have fabricated a multichip silicon retina in which the functional network circuits are divided into two chips: the photoreceptor …

Müller cells in the healthy and diseased retina.

Müller glial cells span the entire thickness of the tissue, and ensheath all retinal neurons, in vertebrate retinae of all species. This morphological relationship is reflected by a multitude of functional interactions between neurons and Müller cells, including a 'metabolic symbiosis' and the processing of visual information. Müller cells are also responsible for the maintenance of the homeostasis of the retinal extracellular milieu (ions, water, neurotransmitter molecules, and pH). In vascularized retinae, Müller cells may also be involved in the control of angiogenesis, and the regulation o…

The hedgehog pathway is a modulator of retina regeneration.

The embryonic chick has the ability to regenerate its retina after it has been completely removed. Here, we provide a detailed characterization of retina regeneration in the embryonic chick at the cellular level. Retina regeneration can occur in two distinct manners. The first is via transdifferentiation, which is induced by members of the Fibroblast growth factor (Fgf) family. The second type of retinal regeneration occurs from the anterior margin of the eye, near the ciliary body (CB) and ciliary marginal zone (CMZ). We show that regeneration from the CB/CMZ is the result of proliferating st…

A two-compartment model of the human retina.

PURPOSE: In this article we question a basic concept in retinal pathology, which views the retina as composed primarily of neural elements, in a single compartment. METHODS: We suggest an alternative approach, centering on the epithelial-glial elements of the retina, dividing the retina into two distinct compartments. The framework of these two compartments is composed of two epithelial-like monostratified cell layers facing each other by their apical surfaces. This model is in agreement with the embryological development of the retina. RESULTS: Each compartment is composed of a monostratifi…

Segregation of object and background motion in the retina.

An important task in vision is to detect objects moving within a stationary scene. During normal viewing this is complicated by the presence of eye movements that continually scan the image across the retina, even during fixation. To detect moving objects, the brain must distinguish local motion within the scene from the global retinal image drift due to fixational eye movements. We have found that this process begins in the retina: a subset of retinal ganglion cells responds to motion in the receptive field centre, but only if the wider surround moves with a different trajectory. This selecti…

[Gyrate atrophy of choroid and retina, and hyperornithinemia].

Gyrate atrophy of the choroid and retina is a rare degenerative disease, characterized biochemically by a marked increase in blood ornithine levels, due to deficiency of ornithine S-amino transferase. 4 men aged 35, 36, 48 and 62 years are described with different stages of myopia, night blindness and loss of peripheral vision, which progressed to tunnel vision and partial blindness. Onset of the disease was at ages 3, 10 and 15 years, respectively, while in the 4th patient there was delayed expression starting at about age 50. Most had posterior subcapsular cataracts, and the ocular fundus ex…

Amino acid neurochemistry of the vertebrate retina.

The dominant neurochemicals involved in encoding sensory information are the amino acid neurotransmitters, glutamate, gamma-aminobutyrate (GABA) and glycine, which mediate fast point-to-point synaptic transmission in the retina and other parts of the central nervous system. The relative abundance of these neurochemicals and the existence of neuronal and glial uptake mechanisms as well as a plethora of receptors support the key role these neurochemicals play in shaping neural information. However, in addition to subserving neurotransmitter roles, amino acids subserve normal metabolic, cellular f…

[Hemangioma racemosum of retina: a case report].

PURPOSE: To report a case of haemangioma racemosum, a rare congenital disease. PATIENT: Female patient, aged 17, with unilateral decrease of visual acuity. Examination showed retinal arteriovenous malformations. Fluorescein angiography demonstrated variably sized arteriovenous communications, tortuosity and dilatation of the malformed vessels as well as normal vessels. CONCLUSION: The reported case shows the difficulties that may be encountered in differentiating haemangioma racemosum from hemangiomas associated with other disorders. A complete physical examination and angiography are essent…

Isolated metastases to the retina or optic nerve.

Isolated metastases to the retina or optic nerve are extremely rare. Retinal metastases arise from cutaneous malignant melanoma and carcinomas (lung, gastrointestinal, genitourinary, and breast). Most patients present with reduced vision. The clinical appearance of these metastases is variable. Melanoma metastases are brown or black, whereas carcinoma metastases are white. Frequently, retinal hemorrhages and exudates are seen. Optic nerve metastases arise from carcinomas (lung, breast, and gastrointestinal) in adults and acute leukemias in children. As is true of retinal metastases, most patie…

Tractional elevations of the retina in patients with diabetes.

Tractional retinoschisis and tractional retinal detachment are both complications of proliferative diabetic retinopathy. The two conditions are frequently confused because they are similar in diagnostic features. We determined the respective incidence of tractional retinoschisis and tractional retinal detachment in 200 eyes with tractional elevations of the retina in patients with diabetes. In 39 eyes, the diagnosis was unequivocally tractional retinoschisis because the retinal elevation maintained its concave contour despite the development of retinal holes. In 65 eyes, tractional retinal det…

Lattice degeneration of the retina and retinal detachment.

Lattice retinal degeneration is considered the most significant peripheral retinal disorder potentially predisposing to retinal breaks and retinal detachment. Lattice degeneration affects the vitreous and inner retinal layers with secondary changes as deep as the retinal pigment epithelium and perhaps the choriocapillaris. Variations in clinical appearance are the rule; geographically, lattice lesions favor the vertical meridians between the equator and the ora serrata. Lattice degeneration begins early in life and has been reported in sequential generations of the same family. Along with its …

Ocular complications of arteriovenous communications of the retina.

Primary arteriovenous communications of the retina (AVCR) are usually considered to be stable retinal lesions. Complications were documented in seven cases of AVCR, including intraretinal macular hemorrhage, central and peripheral retinal vein occlusions, neovascular glaucoma, and vitreous hemorrhage. To explain these developments, a hypothesis is presented that AVCR are associated with localized decreased retinal arterial pressure, increased retinal venous pressure, increased turbulence of blood flow, and decreased perfusion of adjacent retinal tissues.

Opportunistic infections of the retina and posterior segment.

Opportunistic infections of the retina are becoming a more frequent diagnostic and therapeutic challenge as immunosuppressed patients become more common. Viral, fungal, protozoan, and bacterial agents may be encountered. Diagnostic and therapeutic considerations, illustrated by case histories, are presented in this article. Viral infections are characterized by progressive exudation and hemorrhagic necrosis in a segmental distribution corresponding to the retinal vasculature. Protozoan, fungal, and bacterial infections may demonstrate more focal lesions with greater vitreous involvement. Diagn…

Rhegmatogenous retinal detachment in angiomatosis retinae.

Three patients with von Hippel tumors of the retina developed rhegmatogenous retinal detachments caused by surface traction on the angioma. The break in each case was located at the posterior base of the angioma, between the afferent and efferent vessels. Conventional scleral buckling surgery with cryotherapy and a silicone episcleral sponge successfully reattached the retina in all three cases.

Neurotensin actions in the retina: mechanisms and variability.

The effects of neurotensin on mudpuppy retinal cells were studied using extracellular and intracellular electrophysiological recording techniques and bath application of the peptide. Ganglion and amacrine cells (but not bipolar or horizontal cells) were reversibly depolarized by low micromolar concentrations of neurotensin. Depolarizations also occurred with neurotensin application during cobalt block of synaptic transmission and were accompanied by decreased input resistances. This suggests neurotensin may act directly on amacrine and ganglion cells as a conventional excitatory transmitter. H…

[Congenital malformation of the pigment epithelium and retina].

A case of congenital malformation of the retina and of the pigment epithelium is reported, the lesion presenting as a slightly elevated greenish-blue lesion in the macular area or retinal periphery. The outer portion was hyperpigmented, the nonpigmented inner portion consisting of malformed thickened retina. Marked vascular tortuosity resulted from disturbance of the retinal layers and the presence of preretinal membrane. The lesion was detected in a boy with strabismus, loss of visual acuity and hyperopia, and is often misdiagnosed as tumor.

Gyrate atrophy of the choroid and retina in a cat.

An adult male, domestic short-haired cat with generalized retinal atrophy was found to have a 60-fold increase in plasma ornithine and ornithinuria. Ornithine-8-aminotransferase activity was undetectable in its tissues and in its cultured skin fibroblasts. This feline condition is thus analogous to gyrate atrophy of the choroid and retina in humans.

Experimental inflammatory serous detachment of the retina.

Rhesus monkey eyes were studied after the development of inflammatory serous retinal detachments following internal carotid artery injection of live, yeast-phase Histoplasma capsulatum organisms. Horseradish peroxidase (HRP) was used as a tracer to examine the inner and outer blood-retinal barriers. The HRP was present in a decreasing gradient from the choroid into the subretinal space and was not found to have leaked from retinal vessels. The source of subretinal fluid in this model of inflammatory serous retinal detachment was leakage from the choroid through a defective outer blood-retinal …
