Studies in India demonstrate that the beta-carotene in red palm oil is as effective as high-dose retinyl palmitate as a supplement to restore and preserve vitamin A nutriture in schoolchildren and may be an effective food-based strategy to combat hypovitaminosis A.

Vitamin A deficiency (VAD) is a public health problem affecting millions in developing nations. Supplementation for lactating women, whose needs are high, involves large oral doses of the preformed vitamin. The safety and efficacy of these doses has been inadequately studied. Numerous vitamin supplements are available over-the-counter to the general public. Some such supplements are available as candy-like chewable preparations to encourage consumption by children. We report 3 cases of overdose of such preparations. Each patient had taken an estimated 200,000 to 300,000 IU of vitamin A. Our previous studies showed that intranasal vaccination of vitamin A-deficient (VAD) mice failed to induce normal levels of upper respiratory tract IgA, a first line of defense against respiratory virus infection. Here we demonstrate that the impaired responses in VAD animals are corrected by a single intranasal application of retinyl palmitate with the vaccine. Results encourage the clinical testing of intranasal vitamin A supplements to improve protection against respiratory viral disease in VAD populations.

One goal of experimental oncology is to find and test effective chemopreventive substances which can suppress malignant transformation of the cells, their accumulation and invasion. Mammary gland tumours were induced by DMBA applied intragastrically (10 mg/rat, three times) every three days between postnatal days 50 and 60 in female Sprague-Dawley rats.
