AIM: Evaluate the skeletal and upper airway changes induced by the Twin Block device in patients with Class II malocclusion due to mandibular retrognathia using 2D imaging and compare the effects of prepubertal and pubertal treatment.
METHODS: Thirty patients (15 males and 15 females) with Class II malocclusion who were treated with the Twin Block device were selected. Latero-lateral teleradiographs were acquired at the beginning (T0) and end (T1) of treatment. The sample was divided into two groups (pre-pubertal and pubertal) according to cervical vertebral maturation (CVM). Patients wore th

Chromosomal deletion syndromes are common worldwide. However, one rare condition that distinguishes a limited number of reported cases and variable phenotypes is 20p12.3 microdeletion syndrome. This case report describes a nine-year-old girl diagnosed with 20p12.3 microdeletion syndrome. Genetic testing revealed a deletion spanning 3.5 Mb and containing 31 genes. The patient presented with a range of clinical manifestations, including growth faltering, short stature, controlled seizure disorder, dysmorphic features, and metabolic disturbances. Regarding dysmorphic features, she presented with

Skeletal Class II malocclusion is the most common indication for combined orthodontic-orthognathic treatment. Interdental distraction osteogenesis can be applied during the pubertal growth spurt with the aim of avoiding orthognathic surgery at a later age. This retrospective case study included 20 patients with mandibular retrognathia for whom orthodontic treatment with functional appliances had yielded insufficient results and who were subsequently treated with interdental distraction osteogenesis. A Class I occlusion was achieved in all patients. The average mandibular length gain was 9.6 mm

INTRODUCTION: Weaver syndrome (WS) is a rare autosomal dominant disorder characterized by distinctive facial features, pre- and post-natal overgrowth, macrocephaly, and variable developmental delay. The characteristic facial features are ocular hypertelorism, a broad forehead, almond-shaped palpebral fissures and, in early childhood, large, fleshy ears, a pointed "stuck-on" chin with horizontal skin creases, and retrognathia. Heterozygous pathogenic/likely pathogenic variants in the enhancer of zeste homolog 2 (EZH2) gene are responsible for WS.
CASE PRESENTATION: Here, we report a male patie

A male infant presented with progressive paleness of the body since 3 months of age. On examination, the child had pallor, microcephaly with dysmorphic facies (depressed nasal bridge, low set ears, retrognathia, high arched palate and tongue hamartoma). Postaxial polydactyly in bilateral hands and feet, broad great toes, with syndactyly of left fourth and fifth toes were present. The haemogram showed severe anaemia with a microcytic hypochromic picture. High-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) was normal. However, the parents' HPLC was suggestive of beta thalassaemia trait. Whole-exome se

Severe mandibular deficiency caused by temporomandibular joint (TMJ) ankyloses produces functional and aesthetic problems that require complicated long-term treatment. In this case report, we describe the benefits of using microimplant mechanics for controlling the direction of distraction during distraction osteogenesis and for performing the movement of teeth. We also present its remarkable results and long-term stability. A 20-year-old girl presented with a convex profile due to severe mandibular retrognathia after a history of several TMJ surgeries for bilateral TMJ ankyloses. Mandibular d

To our knowledge, a derivative chromosome 17 formed by a subtelomeric translocation involving chromosomes 17 and 14 has not been reported before. Here, we present the clinical and molecular cytogenetic characteristics of 2 family members with a subtelomeric rearrangement involving chromosome regions 14q32.32q32.33 and 17p13.3. The patients had moderate intellectual disability, a high forehead, a broad nasal root, downslanting palpebral fissures, epicanthal folds, retrognathia, hypertelorism, wrinkled skin over the glabella and metopic suture, and mild finger clubbing. Array CGH detected a 2.52

Ankylosis of the temporomandibular joint (TMJ) is a severe disorder that leads to jaw function impairment and restricted mouth opening. Management of TMJ ankylosis poses a challenge to surgeons concerned because of the high rate of recurrence. The surgical approach to TMJ ankylosis can be performed according to different techniques and modalities. This report presents a case of a bilateral posttraumatic TMJ ankylosis that showed limited mouth opening (27 mm) along with dental occlusion abnormalities, and both TMJs showed severe fibro-osseous ankylosis. Bilateral gap arthroplasty was performed,

Many disorders have been described in infants exposed to carbimazole during the first weeks of pregnancy. The most common of them are congenital aplasia cutis, choanal atresia and esophageal atresia. Rather unspecific dysmorphic features and developmental delay have also been reported. This set of congenital malformations suggests the existence of a phenotype of carbimazole embryopathy. To date, about 30 cases have been reported. We report on a new case of pregnancy accidentally conducted under carbimazole which gave birth to a newborn presenting with a hypertrophic pyloric stenosis associated

The patients with a chromosome 22q11 deletion have a variable phenotype which includes DiGeorge (DG) and Velocardiofacial (VCF) syndromes. The aim of the present study is to characterize the phenotype of DG and VCF using facial biometry in 12 portuguese patients. We found 4/12 patients with the DG phenotype: 3/4 had telecanthus, small mouth and retrognathia; 1/4 had telecanthus, short nose with bulbous tip and a normal mouth. These patients had major cardiac defects associated with hypoplastic or absent thymus and monosomy 22q11. We did not find velopharyngeal insufficiency in patients with th

The craniofacial growth in children with juvenile chronic arthritis (JCA), especially that of the mandible, and the degree of destruction of the mandibular condyles vary depending on the heterogeneity in duration and intensity of the disease. In JCA children showing destruction of the temporomandibular joint, the dentofacial morphology is characterized by overall smaller dimensions of the mandible, mandibular retrognathia, a steep mandibular plane, Class II malocclusion, dental crowding, and frontal open bite. In children with unilateral condylar destruction, asymmetries will develop, with the

In two unrelated girls, each with severe mental deficiency and craniofacial dysmorphism, deletion of chromosome segment 1q4 had occurred de novo. These two observations together with seven others from the literature allow delineation of a syndrome, as follows. Growth retardation is marked at birth and remains beyond the 3rd percentile. Mental retardation is severe. Seizures are frequent. The cry may be unusually high pitched. Craniofacial dysmorphism includes brachymicrocephaly, a round and flat facies, a high forehead with a prominent metopic suture, thin and scarse hair, palpebral fissures s

In children with Juvenile Chronic arthritis (JCA), temporomandibular joint involvement may lead to disturbances in dentofacial growth and mandibular function. The aim of this thesis was to study the dentofacial morphology, temporomandibular joint destruction and mandibular function in JCA children, and the relation between these factors. The intention was also to make a longitudinal study of the changes in facial morphology during growth and during treatment with functional appliances. Thirty-five JCA children, 12 boys and 23 girls, aged 7-16 years (mean 11.2 years), and the control groups, wi
