Sarcoma botryoides in an infant.

A 17-month-old girl with no medical history presented at our emergency room with abnormal vaginal bleeding and vaginal tissue loss with a "grape bunch" appearance. Physical examination showed no abnormalities, but gynaecological examination showed abnormal vaginal tissue protruding through the vagina introitus. Given the typical clinical presentation, the age of the girl and the location and aspect of the lesion, there was a high suspicion of the botryoid variant of embryonal rhabdomyosarcoma of the vagina. Histology of a biopsy of the lesion was consistent with embryonal rhabdomyosarcoma. As

Successful treatment of a very rare case: locally treated cervical rhabdomyosarcoma.

AIM: To study the local treatment of uterine cervical rhabdomyosarcoma in which fertility-sparing surgery is done. METHODS: We report an embryonal rhabdomyosarcoma of the uterine cervix which presented as a cervical polyp in a 22-year-old nulliparous woman. RESULTS: The tumor was composed of rhabdomyoblasts of varying differentiation dispersed within a loose, myxoid stroma, and formed a distinct cambium layer beneath the epithelium. The patient was successfully treated with fertility-sparing surgery and adjuvant chemotherapy. CONCLUSION: The treatment modality should be done according to th

Rhabdomyosarcoma of the spermatic cord. A case report with review of the literature.

Rhabdomyosarcoma is a rare malignant tumor that may occur in the spermatic cord in childhood. So far, 62 cases have been reported in the English literature. We describe a case of embryonal rhabdomyosarcoma of the spermatic cord in a 15-year-old boy, detailing clinical history, light microscopy, immunohistochemistry and treatment. In order to unquestionably demonstrate the myogenic differentiation of the neoplasm, it was decided to use a monoclonal antibody against MyoD1. The nuclear positivity of this phosphoprotein in the tumor cells confirmed the diagnosis of embryonal rhabdomyosarcoma. Cons

Sarcoma botryoides of the uterine endocervix: long-term results of conservative surgery.

Sarcoma botryoides, a variant of embryonal rhabdomyosarcoma, is the most common neoplasm of the lower genital tract in girls under 16 years of age. This neoplasm more frequently has a vaginal location in patients younger than 4 years, whereas a cervical location has its peak incidence in the second decade. Although the recommended therapy has been radical surgery alone or combined with other modalities, the use of neoadjuvant chemotherapy has changed the surgical approach to one employing a less radical procedure such as a simple hysterectomy or local excision. We present the case of a 12-year

Expression of the retinoblastoma susceptibility gene in childhood rhabdomyosarcomas.

BACKGROUND: Alveolar and embryonal rhabdomyosarcomas are soft-tissue tumors that occur mainly in childhood. The more aggressive alveolar subtype has been found to possess a characteristic chromosomal abnormality located near the retinoblastoma susceptibility gene (RB1). RB1 is a tumor suppressor gene implicated in the development of retinoblastoma and other, unrelated malignancies, especially osteogenic sarcomas and other second malignancies in retinoblastoma survivors. PURPOSE: The goals of our study were (a) to determine whether abnormalities of RB1 occur routinely in sporadic rhabdomyosarc

T-cell acute lymphoblastic leukemia following therapy of rhabdomyosarcoma.

Multiple studies have documented an increased risk of secondary malignancies in patients receiving alkylating agents. Secondary leukemia following chemotherapy accounts for about 20% of all secondary neoplasms; most are acute nonlymphocytic. Secondary acute lymphoblastic leukemia has rarely been reported in either adult or childhood cancer. We report the development of acute T-cell lymphoblastic leukemia in a child following successful treatment of a paravertebral embryonal rhabdomyosarcoma (ERS). Southern blot analysis of DNA extracted from the T-cell lymphoblasts, using probes homologous to

[Clinical and imaging features of abdominal rhabdomyosarcoma of non-organ origin in children].

Objective: To evaluate the clinical and imaging features of abdominal rhabdomyosarcoma of non-organ origin in children. Methods: We retrospectively analyzed the clinical and imaging features of 12 pediatric patients with abdominal rhabdomyosarcoma confirmed by surgery and pathology at our hospital. Results: There were 9 boys and 3 girls, with an average age of (5.47±3.92) years old (range, 1 to 15). According to Intergroup Rhabdomyosarcoma Study (IRS) staging system, they were of stage Ⅲ to stage Ⅳ, and most were of embryonal type. Tumors of 7 cases were located in the pelvic cavity, 2 cases i

Experimental chemotherapy and radiotherapy to paratesticular rhabdomyosarcoma.

Experimental chemotherapy and radiotherapy were tried in transplanted tumors derived from a paratesticular embryonal rhabdomyosarcoma. There was no significant difference on the therapeutic effect between a combination chemotherapy composed of vincristine, actinomycin D and cyclophosphamide, so-called "VAC" regimen, and a single therapy of radiation. However, morphologic analyses suggest that VAC is effective in embryonal rhabdomyosarcomas in which undifferentiated rhabdomyoblasts predominate, while radiotherapy is preferable for those containing variously differentiated rhabdomyoblasts.

Hyperostosis in orbital rhabdomyosarcoma.

Rhabdomyosarcoma is the most common soft-tissue sarcoma in paediatric patients and may arise as a primary orbital neoplasm. Imaging studies show a unilateral solitary orbital lesion. With larger tumours, erosion of the adjacent orbital walls is a common accompanying bony change. We present an unusual case of rhabdomyosarcoma in a preschool girl with proptosis and temporal bossing. Imaging studies showed a homogeneous, well-delineated, extraconal mass of the right orbit with hyperostosis of the adjacent sphenoid bone. After excision of the mass and debulking of the sphenoid bone, histopathology

Perianal rhabdomyosarcoma: report of a case in an infant and review of the literature.

Rhabdomyosarcoma of the perianal and perineal region is a rare sarcoma of childhood with a poor prognosis. The clinical findings are similar to those of condyloma accuminata, which makes it difficult to diagnose. There are a few reports of this disease in the dermatologic literature. We present a 15-month-old girl with a polypoid anal mass diagnosed as embryonal rhabdomyosarcoma and a review of the current literature.

Maintenance of normal imprinting of H19 and IGF2 genes in neuroblastoma.

H19 and insulin-like growth factor II (IGF2) are among a few genes which have been confirmed to be imprinted in normal human embryonal tissues. This results in monoallelic expression of maternal H19 and paternal IGF2. Loss of imprinting of these genes producing biallelic expression has been observed in Wilm's tumor and embryonal rhabdomyosarcoma, suggesting that an epigenetic change of DNA, in addition to a genetic change in oncogene(s) and/or tumor suppressor gene(s), may be involved in the development of these childhood cancers. Neuroblastoma, which is an embryonal tumor originating from neu

Oral rehabilitation following removal of a rhabdomyosarcoma and subsequent microstomia: a case report.

Rhabdomyosarcoma is a malignant tumor that is most often seen in children younger than 15 years of age. This pathology is found mainly in the head and neck region. Treatment of rhabdomyosarcoma at early stages of life usually affects the dental and osseous development of children. Because of impaired development, microstomia can arise, making dental treatment more difficult. This article presents a patient with microstomia caused by resection of an embryonal rhabdomyosarcoma in the nasolabial region. The patient was treated with 5 dental implants and fixed hybrid prosthesis in the maxilla and

Rhabdomyosarcoma of head and neck--an analysis of 24 cases.

Clinical records of 24 cases or rhabdomyosarcoma involving head and neck region were studied. Majority of the patients (83.3%) were under five years of age. The common sites of involvement were the middle ear (50%) and the nasopharynx (17%). Embryonal variety was noted in majority of patients (83.3%). Pain and swelling in the post aural or pre-auricular region was the commonest mode of presentation. Last four cranial nerves were involved in eight patients and four patients had extension of the tumor in the posterior cranial fossa. Twenty patients having embryonal rhabdomyosarcoma received comb

Rhabdomyosarcoma arising from retroperitoneal teratoma in an infantile neurofibromatosis type 1 patient.

We herein report the case of a 2-year-old girl with neurofibromatosis type 1 (NF1), who presented with a 12-cm mass in the right retroperitoneum and underwent tumor resection. Histologically, the tumor was composed of two distinct components: one was teratoma, showing mature morphology; and the other was embryonal rhabdomyosarcoma. An interphase fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH) analysis of the rhabdomyosarcoma component revealed the absence of isochromosome 12p. Although it is well known that rhabdomyosarcoma occurs in infantile NF1, and that rhabdomyosarcoma can arise from teratoma a

A Case report: Co-occurrence of IMAGe syndrome and Rhabdomyosarcoma.

IMAGe syndrome is a rare congenital disorder, presenting with intrauterine growth restriction, metaphyseal dysplasia, adrenal hypoplasia congenita and genital anomalies (in males). So far only 17 individuals have been diagnosed molecularly with IMAGe syndrome, this patient is the first case of an individual diagnosed with IMAGe and concurrent rhabdomyosarcoma. The patient was born at 30 weeks' gestation and received treatment for hyponatremia and hyperkalemia. At 4 9/12 years of age the patient showed a painless, non-mobile mass on the left thigh. In the biopsy performed a sarcoma weave with s

Rhabdomyosarcoma of the ciliary body.

Rhabdomyosarcoma is the most common malignant orbital tumor of childhood. It has twice been reported to arise within the globe from the iris. In addition, teratoid medulloepithelioma, a tumor arising from the ciliary epithelium, can contain a rhabdomyoblastic component, often in combination with other heteroplastic elements. The authors report what may be the first recorded case of an embryonal rhabdomyosarcoma of the ciliary body, possibly representing a one-sided differentiation of a malignant teratoid medulloepithelioma.

Meningeal rhabdomyosarcoma. Report of a case with cytologic, immunohistologic and ultrastructural studies.

Primary rhabdomyosarcoma of the meninges, a very rare brain tumor, is reported. Cytologic findings by squash preparation were useful as an adjunct to frozen section diagnosis during surgery. The cytologic features of rhabdomyosarcoma without cross-striation have some similarities to those of gemistocytic astrocytomas and anaplastic meningiomas, but the cytoplasmic filaments of rhabdomyosarcoma are different from those of gemistocytic astrocytoma and anaplastic meningioma. Histologically the tumor was embryonal rhabdomyosarcoma with a partially botryoid pattern. The tumor cells have no cross-st

Deregulation of the hedgehog signalling pathway: a possible role for the PTCH and SUFU genes in human rhabdomyoma and rhabdomyosarcoma development.

The naevoid basal cell carcinoma syndrome (NBCCS) is caused by mutations in the hedgehog receptor PTCH gene. It is characterized by developmental defects and a predisposition to the development of certain tumours, such as basal cell carcinoma, medulloblastoma and meningioma, and potentially fetal rhabdomyomas and embryonal rhabdomyosarcomas. This study aimed to analyse PTCH status in an NBCCS patient with fetal rhabdomyoma and to investigate whether deregulation of hedgehog signalling, as shown by altered expression of hedgehog pathway components and/or genetic imbalances, is a general finding
