INTRODUCTION: Rhinophyma is a relatively rare form of rosacea, while basal cell carcinoma (BCC) is the most frequent skin cancer in humans - both diseases prevail in the elderly.
AIM: To analyse patients with rhinophyma treated surgically in the Dermatosurgery Unit and look for possible cases with BCC within the rhinophyma.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: We performed a retrospective review of all treated rhinophymas in the Dermatosurgery Unit in 2004-2019.
RESULTS: Among 140 rhinophyma patients 2 (1.4%) subjects with concomitant clinically diagnosed and histologically confirmed BCC were found, with …

Rhinophymas are characterized by slowly progressive enlargement of the nasal skin that will not resolve spontaneously. The usual indication for treatment has plastic cosmetic and functional reasons, above all in advanced cases with an obstruction of the nasal respiration or reduction of the visual field. Treatment of rhinophyma consists of surgical removal of the hyperplastic alterations. It should always be carried out by an experienced rhinosurgeon, because of possible complications and injury to the more deeply situated nasal structures. Different surgical procedures have been described, su…

Rhinophyma, a late-stage complication of rosacea, causes progressive nasal deformity characterized by hypertrophy and fibrosis of sebaceous glands. Surgical excision is the primary treatment, and various techniques are available. This case report highlights a 70-year-old male treated with full-thickness excision and skin grafting, demonstrating successful outcomes. The review underscores the importance of personalized surgical approaches to achieve optimal results in rhinophyma management.

Rhinophyma is a phenotypic subtype of rosacea affecting the nose. It is characterized by phymatous changes, skin thickening/fibrosis, glandular hyperplasia, and chronic inflammation. Treatment of severe rhinophyma is predominantly surgical excision with closure by secondary intention. Amniotic membrane has been used to promote wound healing, fibrosis, and inflammation. In this case study, the authors present a 63-year-old male with longstanding rhinophyma treated with surgical excision with intraoperative placement of amniotic membrane.

BACKGROUND: Rhinophyma causes a nasal deformity and functional airway obstruction. Partial excision (eg, tangential) with secondary healing commonly removes hypertrophic soft tissues but does not improve nasal support. The subunit method for rhinophyma uses 6 nasal flaps to provide exposure for removal of rhinophymatous tissue and enhance structure. The purpose of this study was to evaluate outcomes of subunit method.
METHODS: Medical records of patients with rhinophyma treated with the subunit method between 2013 and 2016 were analyzed. The technique comprises degloving the distal half of th…

Cutaneous leishmaniasis(CL) is referred to a group of diseases because of the varied clinical presentation, ranging from small cutaneous nodule to wide spread mucosal destruction. The nose is rarely involved by CL in even in endemic region. In this report we describe a rare rhinophymatous presentation of CL from a non-endemic region which was diagnosed by fine needle sampling and treated with Miltefosine.

Operation is the mainstay of treatment for rhinophyma. Numerous techniques for dermaplaning and dermabrasion have been described with typical healing times of roughly 3 weeks. We present a case that combined use of the Versajet™ (Smith & Nephew, UK) system with ReCell(®) non-cultured autologous skin cells (Avita Medical, UK) to expedite re-epithelialisation. After sculpting with Versajet™, a 1cm(2) split-thickness skin biopsy specimen was harvested for application of autologous skin. Postoperative pictures at 6 days show well-formed epithelial buds, and at 9 days the nose was fully healed. The…

BACKGROUND: Rhinophyma is a disfiguring disorder of the nasal skin characterized by hypervascularity, sebaceous gland hyperplasia, occluded sebaceous ducts, and dermal fibrosis. It has no known effective medical treatment; however, a myriad of surgical treatments have been reported. We report an effective, efficient, and safe approach to treat this disorder using the Shaw scalpel to surgically sculpt the nose.
OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the efficacy and safety of using the Shaw scalpel to treat rhinophyma.
METHODS: We performed a retrospective review of 7 male patients (age range, 58-81 years) w…

A patient, 64-year-old, is referred for the treatment of a giant rhinophyma. He refused any treatment during eight years. The interest of this case report is the size and the weight of the rhinophyma, the obstruction of the nasal airways and the resulting social disturbance. This exceptional clinical rhinophyma was associated with an otophyma, a zygophyma and ophthalmic disease. To our knowledge, this clinical presentation has never been reported before. The management of the rhinophyma and the otophyma was surgical excision, secondary healing followed by a full thickness skin graft associated…
