Partial rhombencephalosynapsis and Chiari type II malformation in a child: a true association supported by DTI tractography.

Partial rhombencephalosynapsis (PRECS) has been recently reported in association with Chiari II (CII). However, its existence as a true malformation is challenged due to the anatomical changes potentially induced by CII. The aim of this report was to investigate the contribution of midbrain/hindbrain tractography in this setting. A 13-year-old boy with a known CII malformation and operated myelomeningocele was referred for brain imaging after a first complex partial seizure. In addition to the classical features of CII, MRI showed partially fused cerebellar hemispheres and multiple supratentor

Immunohistochemical localization of atrial natriuretic factor and autoradiographic distribution of atrial natriuretic factor-binding sites in the brain of the cave salamander Hydromantes genei (Amphibia, Plethodontidae).

The distribution of atrial natriuretic factor (ANF)-like immunoreactivity in the central nervous system of the cave salamander Hydromantes genei (Amphibia, Plethodontidae) was investigated by using antisera raised against rat and human ANF(1-28). Concurrently, the location of ANF-binding sites was determined by autoradiography, using radioiodinated human ANF(1-28) as a tracer. In several regions of the brain, including the olfactory bulb, the preoptic area, the ventral thalamus, the tectum of the mesencephalon, and the choroid plexuses inside the ventricles, a good correlation was observed bet

Immunoreactive endozepine-like peptides in the brain and pituitary of the Atlantic hagfish, Myxine glutinosa.

Endozepines are a family of peptides capable of displacing benzodiazepines from their specific binding sites, to which belong the diazepam-binding inhibitor and the octadecaneuropeptide (ODN). This paper reports the distribution of ODN-related peptides, investigated for the first time by immunocytochemistry, in different brain and pituitary regions of the Atlantic hagfish, Myxine glutinosa. Immunoreactive ODN-like material was found in the telencephalon at the level of bundles of different olfactory nerve fibres. Moreover, at the level of the pallium, immunoreactive multipolar neurons were obs

Stereotyped axonal bundle formation and neuromeric patterns in embryos of a cyclostome, Lampetra japonica.

Early embryonic development of the nervous system of a lamprey, Lampetra japonica, was studied by using immunohistochemical techniques and by scanning electron microscopy. The earliest appearance of axons was detected at Tahara's stage 21-, when dorsolateral and ventral longitudinal fasciculi were present in the hindbrain and spinal cord regions. The branchiomeric nerve roots began to appear at stage 22; the fibers were joined to the dorsolateral fasciculus proximally and also extended distally into each pharyngeal arch. The anterior neural tube was divided into several neuromeres: the mid-hin

Surgery for hindbrain related syringomyelia.

Syringomyelia is a condition with many possible causes, the commonest of which seems to be an abnormality at the foramen magnum. Such cases may be grouped under the heading of "Hindbrain related syringomyelia" and the principles of treatment for all such cases are largely similar. The commonest of these foramen magnum region abnormalities is hindbrain herniation which may be associated with a history of birth difficulties, a small posterior fossa, segmentation abnormalities of the cervical vertebrae or the base of the skull, arachnoiditis of the subarachnoid spaces, subarachnoid pouches, hydro

An atlas of the brain of the electric fish Apteronotus leptorhynchus.

This atlas consists of a set of six macrophotographs illustrating the important external landmarks of the apteronotid brain, as well as 54 transverse levels through the brain stained with cresyl violet. There are 150 microns between levels and the scales have 1 mm divisions (100 microns small divisions). In general the neuroanatomy of this brain is similar to that of other teleosts except that all parts known to be concerned with electroreception are greatly hypertrophied (electrosensory lateral line lobe, nucleus praeminentialis, caudal lobe of the cerebellum, torus semicircularis dorsalis, o

Central projections of cochlear nerve fibers in the alligator lizard.

The auditory (cochlear) ganglion cells of the alligator lizard (Gerrhonotus multicarinatus) give rise to two types of peripheral fibers: tectorial fibers, which contact hair cells covered by a tectorial membrane, and free-standing fibers, which contact hair cells without a tectorial membrane. To determine the central projections of these fibers, we applied intracellular and extracellular injections of horseradish peroxidase (HRP) to the peripheral component of the cochlear nerve. After histological processing with diaminobenzidine, individual cochlear nerve fibers could be traced through seria

EEFSEC deficiency underlies a human selenopathy with primary neurodevelopmental origins via midbrain-hindbrain hypoplasia.

Bi-allelic mutations in EEFSEC, a key factor in selenoprotein synthesis, cause a severe human selenopathy characterized by developmental delay, spasticity, and profound cerebellar atrophy. While previous studies in invertebrate models framed this condition as an early-onset neurodegenerative disorder, the contribution of primary developmental defects to the severe brain malformations in patients has remained a critical unanswered question. Here, we address this gap using a zebrafish model of EEFSEC deficiency. We discovered that loss of eefsec function does not impair global somatic growth but

Timekeeping in the hindbrain: a multi-oscillatory circadian centre in the mouse dorsal vagal complex.

Metabolic and cardiovascular processes controlled by the hindbrain exhibit 24 h rhythms, but the extent to which the hindbrain possesses endogenous circadian timekeeping is unresolved. Here we provide compelling evidence that genetic, neuronal, and vascular activities of the brainstem's dorsal vagal complex are subject to intrinsic circadian control with a crucial role for the connection between its components in regulating their rhythmic properties. Robust 24 h variation in clock gene expression in vivo and neuronal firing ex vivo were observed in the area postrema (AP) and nucleus of the sol

The Postmigratory Alar Topography of Visceral Cranial Nerve Efferents Challenges the Classical Model of Hindbrain Columns.

The classic columnar model of cranial nerve central representation assumes that all motor and sensory hindbrain neurons develop within four radial migration domains, held to be separated by a sulcal alar-basal boundary (sulcus limitans). This essay reviews a number of developmental data that challenge these concepts. These results are interpreted within the framework of present day neuromeric conception of the brainstem (the prosomeric model). Advances in dorsoventral patterning of the spinal cord and hindbrain now show that there exist up to eight alar microzones and five basal microzones (mo

Midbrain-hindbrain involvement in septo-optic dysplasia.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Midbrain-hindbrain involvement in septo-optic dysplasia has not been well described, despite reported mutations of genes regulating brain stem patterning. We aimed to describe midbrain-hindbrain involvement in patients with septo-optic dysplasia and to identify possible clinical-neuroimaging correlations. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Using MR imaging, we categorized 38 patients (21 males) based on the presence (group A, 21 patients) or absence (group B, 17 patients) of visible brain stem anomalies. We measured height and anteroposterior diameter of midbrain, pons, and medull

Rhombomere-specific patterns of apoptosis in the tree shrew Tupaia belangeri.

Whether rhombomere-specific patterns of apoptosis exist in the developing hindbrain of vertebrates is under debate. We have investigated the sequence of apoptotic events in three-dimensionally reconstructed hindbrains of Tupaia belangeri (8- to 19-somite embryos). Apoptotic cells were identified by structural criteria and by applying an in situ tailing technique to visualize DNA fragmentation. Seven rhombomeres originated from three pro-rhombomeres. Among pre-migratory neural crest cells in the dorsal thirds of the neural folds, the earliest apoptotic concentrations appeared in the developing

Cerebello-trigeminal-dermal dysplasia (Gómez-López-Hernández syndrome): description of three new cases and review.

Cerebello-trigemino-dermal "dysplasia" is a rare neurocutaneous syndrome of craniosynostosis, ataxia, trigeminal anesthesia, scalp alopecia, cerebellar anomaly, midface hypoplasia, corneal opacities, apparently low-set ears, mental retardation, and short stature. It seems to be a sporadic condition but little is known about its cause and pathogenesis in the few cases reported so far. We present three new unrelated patients and magnetic resonance images of the central nervous system, and review the four cases reported previously. We think that this is not such a rare condition, and that it is u

The kreisler mouse: a hindbrain segmentation mutant that lacks two rhombomeres.

kreisler is a recessive mutation resulting in gross malformation of the inner ear of homozygous mice. The defects in the inner ear are related to abnormalities in the hindbrain of the embryo, adjacent to the ear rudiments. At E9.5, the neural tube posterior to the boundary between the third and fourth rhombomeres, r3 and r4, appears unsegmented, and the region that would normally correspond to r4 is unusually thick-walled and contains many dying cells. The absence of morphological segmentation in the posterior hindbrain corresponds to an altered pattern of gene expression in that region, with

A distinctive triad of malformations of the central nervous system in the Meckel-Gruber syndrome.

A distinct triad of central nervous system (CNS) malformations (prosencephalic dysgenesis, occipital exencephalocele and rhombic roof dysgenesis) was present in seven cases of the Meckel-Gruber syndrome examined at autopsy. We compared our findings with those previously described. Microcephaly, sloping forehead, posterior occipital exencephalocele, cerebellar hypoplasia, Chiari malformation, hydrocephalus, polymicrogyria, arhinencephaly, holoprosencephaly and anencephaly constituted a broad spectrum of the reported CNS anomalies. Few reports contained a comprehensive description of the observe

Wnt-signaling enhances neural crest migration of melanoma cells and induces an invasive phenotype.

BACKGROUND: During embryonic development Wnt family members and bone morphogenetic proteins (BMPs) cooperatively induce epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT) in the neural crest. Wnt and BMPs are reactivated during malignant transformation in melanoma. We previously demonstrated that the BMP-antagonist noggin blocked the EMT phenotype of melanoma cells in the neural crest and malignant invasion of melanoma cells in the chick embryo; vice-versa, malignant invasion was induced in human melanocytes in vivo by pre-treatment with BMP-2. RESULTS: Although there are conflicting results in the lite

Neural stem cells from mouse strain Thy1 YFP-16 are a valuable tool to monitor and evaluate neuronal differentiation and morphology.

To analyse events following transplantation of stem cells in the brain robust tools for tracing stem cells are required. Here we took advantage of the mouse strain B6.Cg-Tg(Thy1-YFP)16Jrs/J (Thy1 YFP-16), where yellow fluorescent protein (YFP) is under control of the promoter of Thy1 gene. This allows visualising whole neurons, i.e. their cell body, axons and dendrites. In this work fluorescent cells were followed during embryonic development, in vitro differentiation, and after transplantation in the healthy and stroke-affected mouse brain. During embryonic development Thy1-YFP positive cells
