The roles of dysfunctional attitudes, rumination and mind-wandering in emotional and non-emotional memory of university students in China.

BACKGROUND: Memory deficits are among the key risk factors in mental health problems, and are associated with dysfunctional cognitive factors. AIMS: The present study explored the relations between dysfunctional attitudes, rumination and mind-wandering, and emotional and non-emotional memory, respectively, aiming to inform the mechanism underlying the negative association of these cognitive factors with memory. METHOD: A total of 123 undergraduate university students completed self-report measurements, including Dysfunctional Attitude Scale Form A, Rumination Responses Scale, Mind Wandering

Impulsiveness in Substance Users: Metacognitive Beliefs and Repetitive Negative Thinking as Potential Maintenance Factors.

INTRODUCTION: Using the self-regulatory executive function model as a basis, this study explored whether, among substance users, metacognitive beliefs and repetitive negative thinking were associated with impulsiveness. METHODS: A total of 100 substance users were recruited. Impulsiveness, metacognitive beliefs, rumination and worry were assessed. Correlation and hierarchal regression analyses were run. RESULTS: Beliefs about the need to control thoughts, lower cognitive self-consciousness and brooding rumination were found to be independent predictors of the total score on impulsiveness in

Reflection Rumination Reduces Negative Emotional Processing During Goal-Directed Behavior: An ERP Study.

Trait rumination is a repetitive and often maladaptive attentional focus on the consequences of depression. Rumination independently contributes to cognitive control dysfunction associated with depression. However, it is not clear how the effects of rumination on cognitive control may contribute to negative attention biases as well, or whether it is specific to brooding or reflective rumination. To address these questions, the current study examined the link between trait rumination, cognitive control, and attentional biases. Participants were given a task to remember three neutral faces acros…

Obsessive-Compulsive and Depressive Symptoms: The Role of Depressive Cognitive Styles.

Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) commonly co-occurs with depression, resulting in heightened severity and poorer treatment response. Research on the associations between specific obsessive-compulsive symptoms (OCS) and depressive symptoms has utilized measures that have not fully considered the relationship across OCS dimensions. Little is known about which factors explain the overlap between OCS and depressive symptoms. OCS and depressive symptoms may be related via depressive cognitive styles, such as rumination or dampening (i.e., down-regulating positive emotions). We evaluated the asso

Testing a "content meets process" model of depression vulnerability and rumination: Exploring the moderating role of set-shifting deficits.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: MacCoon and Newman's (2006) "content meets process" model posits that deficits in cognitive control make it difficult to disengage from negative cognitions caused by a negative cognitive style (NCS). The present study examined if the interactive effect of cognitive set-shifting abilities and NCS predicts rumination and past history of depression. METHODS: Participants were 90 previously depressed individuals and 95 never depressed individuals. We administered three laboratory tasks that assess set-shifting: the Wisconsin Card-Sorting Task, the Emotional Card-Sorting

Age differences in neural discriminability of rumination and worry.

Emotional thought patterns such as rumination, worry, and positive reflection are rooted in autobiographical memory and influence well-being. However, their neural representations and how they vary remain poorly understood. This study examined brain activation patterns linked to rumination, worry, and positive thinking in adults aged 18-64. Participants recalled autobiographical events during fMRI, and machine learning was used to decode whole-brain activation patterns. Results showed that neural differentiation of rumination and worry increased with age. Greater age was associated with increa

Effects of Rumination and Emotional Regulation on Non-Suicidal Self-Injury Behaviors in Depressed Adolescents in China: A Multicenter Study.

OBJECTIVE: Emotion dysregulation is one of the core causes of non-suicidal self-injury (NSSI). However, little is known about the effects of emotion regulation and rumination on NSSI behaviors in adolescents with depressive disorder. METHODS: In total, 1782 depressed adolescents (1464 females and 318 males) completed questionnaires on rumination, emotion regulation, and NSSI, with an average age of 14.85. Participants were recruited from the outpatient and inpatient wards of 14 hospitals across the country. RESULTS: NSSI behavior frequency was positively correlated with rumination and negati

Relationships among maladaptive cognitive content, dysfunctional cognitive processes, and borderline personality features.

Previous research has demonstrated that maladaptive cognitive content, including dysfunctional attitudes and negative automatic thoughts, is associated with emotional distress. Similarly, dysfunctional cognitive processes, including thought suppression and rumination, have been shown to intensify psychological difficulties. Although maladaptive cognitive content and dysfunctional processes have been linked to borderline personality disorder (BPD), most research has been conducted with Axis I disorders. This study examined the incremental validity of dysfunctional cognitive content and processe

A longitudinal network analysis of the dynamic interactions between academic stress, rumination and resilience in high school students.

BACKGROUND: Academic stress is prevalent among Chinese high school students and linked to adverse mental health outcomes, yet its interplay with rumination and resilience at the component level remains poorly understood from a cognitive transactional stress perspective. AIMS: This study investigated the interrelationships among academic stress, rumination and resilience at the subdimension level, examining both concurrent network structures and their temporal dynamics across three time points. SAMPLE: Three-wave longitudinal data were collected from 311 Chinese high school students (55.6% ma

Interpretation bias characterizes trait rumination.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Rumination, a maladaptive cognitive style of responding to negative mood, is thought to be maintained by a variety of cognitive biases. However, it is unknown whether rumination is characterized by interpretation biases. METHODS: Two experiments examined the link between rumination and interpretation biases, revealed in lexical-decision tasks (LDT). A homograph with both benign and ruminative or otherwise negative meaning was presented on each trial and followed by a letter string, to which participants responded by judging whether it was a word or a non-word. COVID-19 Stressors and Poor Sleep Quality: The Mediating Role of Rumination and the Moderating Role of Emotion Regulation Strategies.

BACKGROUND: The global spread of COVID-19 has brought immense psychological distress and sleep problems to those affected. This study examined the mediating role of rumination in the direct association between COVID-19 stressors and poor sleep quality and the moderating roles of emotion regulation strategies. METHOD: A cross-sectional online survey study was conducted in China during the early outbreak of the pandemic. A total of 1106 Chinese college students (Mage = 19.58, SD = 1.61) completed measures of COVID-19 stressors, rumination, emotion regulation strategies (i.e., cognitive reapprai

Is Rumination a Risk and a Protective Factor?

High trait positive affect (PA) protects against depressive symptoms through cognitive responses such as rumination. However, how rumination in response to positive emotions (positive rumination) protects against depressive symptoms while rumination in response to negative emotions (brooding) predicts depressive symptoms is poorly understood. We hypothesized that (a) positive rumination and brooding represent a shared cognitive process of affect amplification on distinct affective content and (b) less brooding and greater positive rumination would distinctly mediate greater trait PA in predict

Investigating the role of rumination on reward and punishment processing in an operant conditioning task using event-related potentials.

Pain catastrophizing, and specifically rumination, are key components of the pain experience and a potential predictor of chronic pain. Pain trajectories in chronic pain patients can be influenced by operant conditioning paradigms, with limited knowledge of the mechanisms. Rumination and its impact on event-related potentials (ERPs) in a painful operant conditioning setting, may further elucidate how behavioral and cognitive manipulation can affect somatosensory and nociceptive processing. This study aimed to examine the impact of rumination on ERP responses to auditory feedback cues in a pain

The association between anger rumination and emotional dysregulation in borderline personality disorder: A review.

INTRODUCTION: Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD) is characterized by impulsiveness, interpersonal difficulties, emotional instability and dysfunctional cognitive processes. In addition to these symptoms, anger rumination is a cognitive mechanism often prominent in BPD patients and it has been found to be associated with maladaptive outcomes, such as increasing anger feelings, aggressive and impulsive behaviors. In this context, the aim of our review is to synthesize results on the relationship between emotional dysregulation and anger rumination in BPD with the final goal to get more inform

Cognitive emotion regulation strategies and neuroticism in relation to depressive symptoms following burn injury: a longitudinal study with a 2-year follow-up.

Sustaining burns is considered a stressful life event that has the power to elicit depressive symptoms. This study aimed to identify predictors of depressive symptoms by investigating the role of demographic variables, the number of operations (burn severity), neuroticism, and cognitive emotion regulation styles as possible influencing factors. Data from 242 patients with burns were analyzed employing latent growth modeling. The level of depressive symptoms across the 2-year interval was associated with burn severity, higher levels of neuroticism and rumination, and lower levels of positive re

Sleep Quality and Suicide Ideation among Adolescents: Mediating Role of Rumination and Depressive Symptoms.

OBJECTIVE: Prior studies have found associations between sleep disturbances and suicide ideation among adolescents. However, there is limited prospective research examining cognitive mechanisms that explain this relationship. This present longitudinal study aimed to examine the mediating role of rumination in the relationship between sleep quality and suicide ideation over time. We hypothesized that low sleep quality would be associated with increased suicide ideation severity over time and that rumination would mediate the relationship. METHODS: Adolescents (N = 117), ages 12-19, who present

The Therapeutic Potential of Psychedelics on Reducing Rumination: A Mini-Review.

Rumination is a well-established risk factor for the onset and maintenance of depression and anxiety and is associated with various other forms of psychopathology (e.g., eating pathology, obsessive-compulsive disorder, posttraumatic stress disorder). Evidence suggests that rumination is a transdiagnostic process that may play a key role in the comorbidity of such disorders. However, rumination and related disorders are often difficult to treat and frequently resistant to change, often rendering conventional modes of treatment (e.g., psychotherapy and pharmacology) unsuccessful. A recent renais

Repetitive negative thinking and suicide: a burgeoning literature with need for further exploration.

Extant research has found a significant overlap between various repetitive negative thinking (RNT) patterns, such as rumination and worry, across different affective disorders implicating that the process of repetitive negative thinking is likely trans-diagnostic. Furthermore, RNT patterns at the core of psychiatric disorders associated with suicide (e.g., rumination and worry) have been found to be associated with suicide even after accounting for the disorder. A synthesis of existing literature on repetitive negative thoughts suggest that following negative emotional experiences, RNTs may le
