OBJECTIVE: S100B is produced by glia of the central and peripheral nervous systems and is considered a marker of neurologic injury in the perinatal period. Indeed, increased neonatal urine S100B concentration is associated with adverse neurological outcomes including intraventricular hemorrhage and hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy, while elevated adult serum concentrations are associated with infectious diseases/sepsis. The objective of this study was to determine whether amniotic fluid (AF) S100B concentrations change with advancing gestational age and intra-amniotic infection (IAI).

BACKGROUND: The effect of cardiopulmonary bypass temperature and blood gas management on the brain is still controversial. This study was designed to compare the changes in S100beta protein concentration and Mini-Mental State Examination in patients undergoing cold (28 degrees C) vs. warm (34 degrees C) cardiopulmonary bypass using different blood gas strategies (alpha-stat and pH-stat).
METHODS: Sixty patients were randomly allocated to one of four equal groups (cold alpha-stat, cold pH-stat, warm alpha-stat, warm pH-stat). Serum S100beta concentrations were measured before CPB, directly aft

A retrospective study of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) levels of markers of brain parenchymal damage was conducted in Kenyan children with severe falciparum malaria. Two markers were analysed by immunoassays: the microtubule-associated protein tau for degenerated axons and S-100B for astrocytes. The level of tau proteins in the CSF was significantly elevated in children with cerebral malaria compared with either malaria with prostration or malaria with seizures but normal consciousness (p<0.001). Elevated tau was also found to be associated with impaired delivery of oxygen (severe anaemia), severe

BACKGROUND: Whether surgical haematoma evacuation leads to reduced brain damage in patients with spontaneous supratentorial intracerebral haemorrhage (SSICH) remains unknown. Blood biomarkers reflecting brain damage could aid in prognosticating the clinical outcome and hence support quantifying the benefit of surgical interventions.
METHODS: Blood samples from 10 patients with SSICH in the phase II early minimally invasive image-guided endoscopic evacuation of intracerebral hemorrhage (EMINENT-ICH) pilot study (NCT04805177, completed) were collected longitudinally (at baseline, 24 hours, 3 da

Immune effector cell-associated neurotoxicity syndrome (ICANS) is a frequent complication of CD19 CAR T-cell therapy. Although several biomarkers, particularly S100β, have been reported to be associated with ICANS, their biological significance and specificity remain unclear. We retrospectively studied adult patients treated with commercial CD19 CAR T cells between 2020 and 2024, focusing on early serum dynamics of S100β and neuron-specific enolase (NSE). Among 122 treated patients, 72 had complete paired biomarker measurements and were included; 21 (29%) developed ICANS at a median of 6 days

Neurological complications in patients undergoing veno-venous extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (V-V ECMO) are challenging, with new intracranial pathologies posing a grave risk. We aimed to evaluate the utility of neuron-specific enolase (NSE) and S100B biomarkers for predicting outcomes in new-onset intracranial pathology during V-V ECMO. A retrospective analysis spanning 2013-2021 at a German university hospital was conducted. Cases with electronically available data on NSE and S100B serum levels, new intracranial pathologies (intracerebral hemorrhage [ICH], subarachnoid hemorrhage [SAH],

BACKGROUND: Recent studies have suggested potential impairment of the blood-brain barrier (BBB) in depression. However, due to the limited research and variability in animal models, further investigation using diverse and stable models is necessary.
METHODS: A male mouse model of depression was established using the chronic unpredictable mild stress (CUMS) protocol. Following model establishment, depression-like behaviors were assessed using the sucrose preference test, tail suspension test, and forced swimming test. Morphological changes in the hippocampus were examined through hematoxylin-e

AIM: Antenatal corticosteroids (ACS) are recommended for women at risk of preterm birth before 34 weeks' gestation. However, adverse effects of ACS on the fetal brain have also been reported. The time interval from ACS administration to delivery (ACS-to-delivery interval) might alter the effect of ACS on the fetal brain. This study aimed to evaluate the effect of ACS-to-delivery interval on cord blood S100 calcium-binding protein B (S100B) levels as a biomarker of brain damage.
METHODS: Women who delivered between 2012 and 2020 at a tertiary medical center were divided into three groups accor

Mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI) has become a tough nut in forensic science because of its minor damages but serious consequences. Utilizing biomarkers to diagnose mTBI has become a promising approach due to various shortcomings of traditional diagnostic methods. In this work, we developed a peptide-modified ratiometric fluorescent nanoprobe based on carbon dots (CDs) and gold nanoclusters (AuNCs) for the measurements of a pivotal biomarker S100B protein in the early diagnosis of mTBI. It has been found that florescence intensity of AuNCs at 580 nm was decreased as report signal while the fl

S100B is a glial protein, which belongs to calcium-binding protein family. Alterations of S100B level were noted in various neurodegenerative diseases. In a new glaucoma-like animal model S100B was injected intravitreally, which led to neuronal degeneration in retina and optic nerve. The pathological mechanisms are still unknown. Therefore, S100B protein was intravitreally injected in rats. At days 14 and 21, retina, optic nerve, serum, and aqueous humor were investigated. S100B injection led to an increase of retinal NF-κB at day 14. Furthermore, higher IL-1β levels in retina, serum, and aque

Acute thrombotic thrombocytopenic purpura (TTP) is an aggressive thrombotic microangiopathy that if not treated, can have a 90% mortality rate. Clinical manifestations of this disease include profound thrombocytopenia, hemolytic anemia, and end-organ dysfunction. Neurologic symptoms can occur in 80% of patients and range from mild confusion to coma (Scully et al., Br J Haematol 142:819-826). Here, we present the clinical course of a patient diagnosed with new onset acquired TTP who presented with neurologic changes that waxed and waned during her disease course. In addition to usual clinical a

BACKGROUND: Fibromyalgia (FM) is conceptualized as a central sensitization (CS) condition, that presents high serum brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) and neuroglia activation. Although the S100B protein regulates neuroglia functions, it has been traditionally used as a proxy of central nervous system damage. However, neither BDNF nor S100B association with the clinical picture of FM has been elucidated. To explore their association with the pressure-pain threshold (PPT) in FM, we performed a cross-sectional study, including 56 females with confirmed FM aged 18-65 years. Linear regressio

Cardiac arrest (CA) is a serious health concern that often results in mortality or severe neurological dysfunction in the case of survival. Our aim was to explore the neurological prognostic factors in patients with CA. This retrospective observational study included adult patients with CA. We investigated serum neuron-specific enolase (NSE), S100 calcium-binding protein β (S100β), and indices and parameters at 1, 3, 5, 7 and intensive care unit (ICU) discharge days after CA. The primary study endpoint was the Cerebral Performance Category (CPC) scale score at ICU discharge, which was dichotom

BACKGROUND: The trigemino-vascular system (TVS) plays a key role in migraine pathophysiology. Glial cells are abundant in the TVS system and mainly in the trigeminal ganglion. S100B protein is a calcium-binding protein, found in the cytoplasm of glial cells in the central nervous system, which is released in response to inflammatory stimuli. Previous works analyzing S100B in migraineurs have offered contradictory results.
OBJECTIVE: In this case-control study, we analyzed serum levels of S100B as a possible biomarker of the glial TVS activation in chronic migraine (CM).
