Enhanced tolerance to sulfur dioxide and salt stress of transgenic Chinese cabbage plants expressing both superoxide dismutase and catalase in chloroplasts.

To explore the possibility of overcoming the highly phytotoxic effect of SO(2) and salt stress, we introduced the maize Cu/ZnSOD and/or CAT genes into chloroplasts of Chinese cabbage (Brassica campestris L. ssp. pekinensis cv. Tropical Pride) (referred to as SOD, CAT and SOD+CAT plants). SOD+CAT plants showed enhanced tolerance to 400 ppb SO(2), and visible damage was one-sixth that of wild-type (CK) plants. In addition, when SOD+CAT plants were exposed to a high salt treatment of 200 mM NaCl for 4 weeks, the photosynthetic activity of the plants decreased by only 6%, whereas that of CK plants…

A mutation in the brassinosteroid biosynthesis gene CpDWF5 disrupts vegetative and reproductive development and the salt stress response in squash (Cucurbita pepo).

A Cucurbita pepo mutant with multiple defects in growth and development has been identified and characterized. The mutant dwfcp displayed a … ing germination and the early stages of seedling development, the dwarf mutant was less affected by salt stress than the wild type, concomitantly with a greater upregulation of genes associated with salt tolerance, including those involved in abscisic acid (ABA) biosynthesis, ABA and Ca2+ signaling, and those coding for cation exchangers and transporters.

Bioactivity of selenium-containing pyridinium salts: Prospecting future pharmaceutical constituents to treat liver diseases involving oxidative stress.

Redox imbalance leads to oxidative stress that causes irreversible cellular damage. The incorporation of the antioxidant element selenium (Se) in the structure of pyridinium salts has been used as a strategy in chemical synthesis and can be useful in drug development. We investigated the antioxidant activity of Se-containing pyridinium salts (named Compounds 3A, 3B, and 3C) through in vitro tests. We focused our study on liver protein carbonylation, liver lipoperoxidation, free radical scavenging activity (1,1-diphenyl-2-picryl-hydrazil [DPPH]; 2,2'-azinobis(3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulfonic a

Identification of genes encoding GRF transcription factors in Taraxacum kok-saghyz Rodin and their potential role in response to salt stress.

GRF transcription factors (GRF) are pivotal regulators of plant development and stress tolerance, but their functional repertoire in the rub … ated RNA-seq and qRT-PCR analyses confirmed the tissue-specific expression profiles of TkGRFs under salt stress. Notably, TkGRF1, a nucleus-localized transcription factor displaying transcriptional activation activity, exhibited the most robust response to stress. Overexpression of TkGRF1 in Arabidopsis resulted in elevated Malondialdehyde (MDA) and reactive …

LncRNA MtCIR2 Negatively Regulates Response of Medicago truncatula Seedlings to Salt Stress by Targeting SOS2-Dependent Na Efflux via H2A Ubiquitination.

Increasing evidence indicates that long non-coding RNAs (lncRNAs) play a regulatory role in plant responses to environmental stress. However, the epigenetic mechanisms behind the regulation of salt stress by lncRNAs remain largely elusive. We previously discovered that the lncRNA MtCIR2 of Medicago trnucatula negatively regulated seed germination under salt stress by altering endogenous ABA and GA concentrations via histone ubiquitination. Here we evaluated the roles of MtCIR2 in regulating response of M. truncatula seedlings to salt stress. We found that over-expression and mutation of MtCIR2…

Hydrogen sulfide improves photosynthetic efficiency by regulating light energy dissipation and reversible phosphorylation of thylakoid proteins in rice under salt stress.

Hydrogen sulfide (H2S) has been regarded as a small gasotransmitter associated with physiological and biochemical regulation in plant responses to environmental stresses. However, the regulatory mechanisms of H2S in photosynthesis under adverse conditions remains poorly understood in plants. Here, the role of H2S in the regulation of photosystem I (PSI) and photosystem II (PSII) was investigated in rice seedlings subjected to salt stress. Our results showed that NaHS (H2S donor) pretreatment significantly enhanced photosynthetic pigment content, gas exchange parameters, and the photochemical c…

Ectopic Expression of AeNAC83, a NAC Transcription Factor from Abelmoschus esculentus, Inhibits Growth and Confers Tolerance to Salt Stress in Arabidopsis.

NAC transcription factors play crucial roles in plant growth, development and stress responses. Previously, we preliminarily identified that the transcription factor AeNAC83 gene was significantly up-regulated under salt stress in okra (Abelmoschus esculentus). Herein, we cloned the nuclear-localized AeNAC83 from okra and identified its possible role in salt stress response and plant growth. The down-regulation of AeNAC83 caused by virus-induced gene silencing enhanced plant sensitivity to salt stress and increased the biomass accumulation of okra seedlings. Meanwhile, AeNAC83-overexpression A…

Mitochondrial Respiratory Metabolism in Salt-Stressed Barley (Hordeum vulgare): TCA Cycle Activation With Limited GABA Shunt Engagement.

Plants maintain energy balance under salinity stress through increased respiration and energy use, processes also associated with reactive oxygen species generation. Although respiration imposes a high energy cost, mitochondrial respiration and the tricarboxylic acid (TCA) cycle activity are vital for ATP production and for providing electron donors that drive ion exclusion and ROS detoxification. This study examined the molecular basis of salinity-induced respiratory responses in barley using physiological, biochemical, metabolomic and proteomic analyses. Salt exposure resulted in sodium accu

NRF2 antioxidant response protects against acidic bile salts-induced oxidative stress and DNA damage in esophageal cells.

Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) is the main risk factor for Barrett's tumorigenesis. In this study, we investigated the role of NRF2 in response to exposure to acidic bile salts (ABS), in conditions that mimic GERD, using Barrett's esophagus cell models. We detected an increase in NRF2 protein levels, following exposure to ABS. We found oxidization of cysteines (cysteines with oxidized thiol groups) in KEAP1 protein with a weaker interaction between NRF2 and KEAP1, following ABS exposure. Treatment with bile salts increased nuclear NRF2 levels, enhancing its transcription activity, as m

Genome-Wide Characterization of the Wheat Pum Gene Family and Heterologous Functional Analysis of TaPum-III-5b in Arabidopsis Under Salt Stress.

Pumilio (Pum)-family proteins are evolutionarily conserved RNA-binding proteins that regulate post-transcriptional processes; however, their … transcription-polymerase chain reaction analysis showed more consistent response of TaPum genes to salt stress than to cold or drought stress. Salt stress strongly promoted TaPum-III-5b expression, and its encoded protein exhibited nuclear and cytoplasmic localization. Heterologous overexpression of TaPum-III-5b in Arabidopsis thaliana increased salt toleran …

Genome-wide identification of the peanut HD-Zip gene family and AhHDZ15 positively regulating salt and drought stress in heterologously overexpressed Arabidopsis.

Homeodomain-leucine zipper (HD-Zip) transcription factors play important roles in plant growth, development, and abiotic stress responses. However, bioinformatic analyses and functional studies of HD-Zip family in peanut are scarce. In this study, 128 AhHDZ genes were identified and classified into four subfamilies in the phylogenetic analysis. Transcriptomic data and RT-qPCR analysis indicated the expression levels of AhHDZ4 and AhHDZ15 were significantly elevated in response to 12 h of salt stress, while AhHDZ4/15/60/69/126 all showed a progressive increase over time in response to drought s…

Genomic and phenotypic analysis of stress-tolerant, aroma-producing yeast screened under low-aw, low-moisture content for low-salt chili fermentation.

Developing low-salt foods is crucial to address health concerns associated with hsigh-salt diets, yet it poses a technical challenge: supporting microbial control through low water activity (aw) regulation without high-salt concentrations requires reducing the moisture content of the substrate, which poses a physiological challenge to conventional fermentative microbes. This study aims to bridge this gap by isolating yeasts capable of thriving under such low-salt (4-12% dry basis, d.b.), low-aw (0.87-0.92), and low-moisture content conditions. Using controlled fermentation of two chili varieti
