RATIONALE: Myeloid sarcoma (MS) is an extramedullary solid tumor composed of myeloid progenitor cells, which is rare in non-leukemic patients. Our research aims to enhance the understanding of the challenges in diagnostic and therapeutic of MS.
PATIENT CONCERNS: A 61-year-old male was admitted to hospital presenting with "malignant pleural tumor diagnosed 2 months prior, accompanied by chest distress for over a month."
DIAGNOSIS: Cytological analysis of pleural effusion confirmed malignant cells and supported by immunohistochemical results. Bone marrow biopsy showed 83.5% blasts, with flow c

Myeloid sarcoma (MS) is a distinct entity among myeloid neoplasms defined as a tumour mass of myeloid blasts occurring at an anatomical site other than the bone marrow, in most cases concomitant with acute myeloid leukaemia (AML), rarely without bone marrow involvement. MS may also represent the blast phase of chronic myeloproliferative neoplasms (MPN) and myelodysplastic syndromes (MDS). However, the clinical and molecular heterogeneity of AML, as highlighted by the 2022 World Health Organization (WHO) and International Consensus (ICC) classifications, indirectly define MS more as a set of he

Concerning the article published in this journal by Meireles LC et al., we have recently identified a case of myeloid sarcoma involving the omentum, but it was characterized by ascites as the main symptom, not intestinal obstruction.

Pain in abdomen has wide differentials and narrowing down the clinical possibilities depends on type of pain, location, characterization which is usually assisted by imaging studies. Cholecystitis and cholelithiasis are amongst the common causes of acute abdomen. This study reviews the literature for the clinical characteristics, differential diagnosis, treatment and prognosis of reported cases of gallbladder myeloid sarcoma (GB-MS) who presented with abdominal symptoms. A total of 17 cases of GB-MS were studied. The median age was 52 years with age range of 23 to 84 years. All except 1 patien

We report a case of a 65-year-old female who presented with right-sided headaches, blurring of vision in the right eye, cold-induced epistaxis, and facial numbness in the trigeminal nerve distribution. Laboratory studies revealed a significant number of myeloblasts on peripheral smear with granulated cytoplasm, irregular nuclei, and prominent vacuoles. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) of the brain demonstrated a T1-enhancing 1.5 cm right-sided dural-based lesion involving the medial sphenoid wing, cavernous sinus, infratemporal fossa, and sphenoid sinus region. An endoscopic biopsy of the lesi

BACKGROUND: Significant attention has been directed toward the high incidence of malignant tumours that occur post-transplantation. However, there are few reports of myeloid sarcomas (MSs) following renal transplantation.
CASE PRESENTATION: This case report describes a 26-year-old male patient who presented with repeatedly high creatinine levels and hydronephrosis six months post-renal transplantation. Surgical pathology revealed ureteral MS; however, the tumour recurred following resection. Bone marrow biopsy indicated that the patient also had acute promyelocytic leukaemia. The tumour was t

Myeloid sarcoma (MS) is a localized extra-medullary tumor mass of immature myeloid cells, arising de novo or related to acute myeloid leukemia, of which it can be a forerunner, a coinciding or late event. Less commonly, MS represents an acute blastic transformation of myelodysplastic syndromes or myeloproliferative neoplasms. This rare condition commonly consists of a proliferation of more or less immature cells with a myeloid immunophenotype, very exceptional cases showing a megakaryoblastic or erythroid differentiation. The most common localization of MS is the skin, lymph node, soft tissues

Myeloid Sarcoma (MS), a rare extra hematopoietic carcinoma composed of blast cells, is located primarily in extramedullary sites such as skin, soft tissue, lymph nodes, and bone. MS usually presents in the setting of coexisting acute myeloid leukemia (AML) and myeloproliferative disorders. Gastrointestinal involvement (GI) is extremely rare from nonspecific abdominal symptoms to obstruction. Eight cases of myeloid sarcoma involving the duodenum including the current case have been reported, overall mean age being 40 years (range 17-71) and M : F ratio 7 : 1. The prognosis of patients with de n

Myeloid sarcoma is a form of extra-medullary myeloid neoplasia. Cytogenetic characterization is hampered in the absence of invasion to the bone marrow, origin of cells that are usually studied in cytogenetic studies. We report a 13 years old mole presenting with a mass in the right shoulder. A biopsy of the tumor disclosed a Myeloid Sarcoma. A conventional cytogenetic study of a bone marrow aspirate did not show t (8;21) translocation. A fluorescent in situ hybridization (FISH) performed in the paraffin embedded biopsy of the tumor, detected a chromosome 11 trisomy.

BACKGROUND: Myeloid sarcoma is an extramedullary malignancy of myeloblasts. An unusual case of myeloid sarcoma presenting in the gingiva and affected by drug-induced gingival enlargement is presented.
METHODS: A 63-year-old male taking amlodipine for his hypertension presented with a 3-week gingival enlargement. Although the obvious clinical impression was that of drug-induced gingival enlargement, an incisional biopsy was performed to corroborate chemical enlargement while ruling out diseases such as lymphoma and leukemia.
RESULTS: Microscopic examination of the thickened gingiva revealed s
