PURPOSE OF THE STUDY Evaluation of efficiency and safety in surgically treated patients with Scheuermann hyperkyphosis using posterior-only surgical approach. MATERIAL AND METHODS Our study retrospectively evaluates the results of surgical correction in group of 20 patients with Scheuermann's hyperkyphosis, with an average age of 13 years and 8 month and with follow-up 4 years and 5 month. We evaluated changes of thoracic kyphosis as well as lumbar lordosis in correlation with surgical correction. Furthermore we compared ability of kyphosis to be corrected while performing reclination X-rays b

The most common causes of serious low back pain in children include spondylolysis, Scheuermann disease and musculoligamentous injury. Questions should be asked about the mechanism of onset and exacerbating factors, and the frequency, duration and severity of the pain. The examination should check gait and alignment, flexibility, strength and reflexes, and localize and evaluate the pain. Warning signs of serious problems include constant pain in a child younger than 11 years of age that lasts for several weeks or occurs spontaneously at night, repeatedly interferes with school, play or sports,

Four boys with anterior lumbar disc herniations probably secondary to chronic trauma are reported. Anterior disc herniations may appear as separate lesions-as in our patients-or coexist with Scheuermann's disease. Although Scheuermann's disease, discitis and tuberculosis are regarded as the most common causes of intervertebral disc lesions in childhood, trauma should be excluded as a possible cause in all children with chronic back pain who show localised radiographic signs of narrowed disc spaces with erosive and sclerotic changes in the adjacent vertebrae. Localised mild platyspondly may be

STUDY DESIGN: Randomized controlled single-blinded clinical trial.
PURPOSE: To evaluate the efficacy of Schroth therapy on thoracic curve angle, pain, and self-perceived body image (SPBI) of the back in Scheuermann's patients in comparison with the efficacy of classic anti-gravitation exercises.
OVERVIEW OF LITERATURE: Scheuermann disease is the most common cause of hyperkyphosis of the thoracic and thoracolumbar spine during adolescence. However, very few studies evaluated the effect of exercises on the progression of kyphosis in Scheuermann patients. Schroth three-dimensional exercise ther

Familial accumulation of spinal osteochondrosis (Scheuermann's disease) and hereditary juvenile anterior fusion of the vertebral bodies in the thoraco-lumbal area are reported for the first time in the same family. Radiological examination of the spine in 2 planes of 73 persons formed the basis for the study. Nine cases of spinal osteochondrosis and 5 cases of hereditary juvenile anterior fusion were found. Proliferation and increased height of the anterior surface of the body of the vertebrae and pronounced reduction in the anterior aspect of the intervertebral spaces were characteristic duri

The authors report their preferred method for correcting Scheuermann disease via a combined anterior-posterior approach; their procedure is associated with a lower morbidity rate than the standard approach. Twenty-month followup examination demonstrated excellent maintenance of correction. The results satisfied the requirements to function without restriction in a vigorous military environment.

Persistent pain after posterior spinal fusion affects 12 to 42% of patients with adolescent idiopathic scoliosis. The incidence of persistent pain among surgically treated children with Scheuermann kyphosis and spondylolisthesis is not known. The aim of our study was to determine the predictors and incidence of acute and chronic postoperative pain in adolescents undergoing posterior spinal fusion surgery. The study was a retrospective analysis of a prospectively collected pediatric spine register data. The study included 213 consecutive patients (158 AIS, 19 Scheuermann kyphosis, and 36 spondy

Scoliosis and Scheuermann's disease are common spinal deformities that affect a substantial population, particularly adolescents, often impacting their quality of life. This comprehensive review aims to present a detailed understanding of these conditions, their diagnosis, and various treatment strategies. Through an extensive exploration of current literature, the review discusses the etiology of these spinal deformities and the use of diagnostic tools such as X-rays and MRI. It further delves into the range of treatment options available, from conservative approaches such as physiotherapy an

BACKGROUND: In contrast to what is commonly believed, thoracic disc herniations are not rare lesions. Their etiopathogenesis is largely unknown, but may be linked to trauma, Scheuermann's disease or a degenerative back.
OBJECTIVE: We report two brothers with a symptomatic thoracic disc herniation at T11-T12 and address the possibility of a genetic factor as well as other factors in the etiopathogenesis of (symptomatic) thoracic disc herniations.
CLINICAL FEATURES: Both brothers were in their early thirties and had a physically demanding job, however, only the first one was a smoker and was d

BACKGROUND: There is no data available on the radiographic development of the Scheuermann's deformity. Our purpose was to investigate radiographic deformity progression and the relation between kyphosis progression and clinical outcome in patients with untreated Scheuermann's kyphosis.
METHODS: Thoracic kyphosis (Th4-Th12) was measured from standing lateral radiographs in 19 patients at baseline and after mean 46-year follow-up. Mean age at baseline was 19.2 and at follow-up 64.7 years. At follow-up, height, weight, hand grip strength, and hamstring tightness were measured, and sit-to-stand a

OBJECTIVE: We present a sternoclavicular dislocation as a non-reported complication after spinal kyphotic deformity surgical correction.
BACKGROUND: The sternocostal complex seems to have an important role in the pathology of Scheuermann's kyphotic deformity. A role for the sternoclavicular complex has never been reported in association with Scheuermann's disease pathology but could explain anterior sternoclavicular dislocation after spinal kyphotic deformity correction.
METHODS: A 19-year-old male patient underwent surgery for a 74° thoracic kyphosis associated with a 35° thoracic and a 50°

In this investigation it was examined which is the effect of an extensive spondylodesis by patients with Scheuermann's kyphosis on their sport activity and their physical load capacity. Between 1983 and 1990, 10 patients with severe kyphosis secondary to Scheuermann's disease underwent surgical correction and spinal fusion. In 1997 all 10 patients were clinically and radiologically examined and interviewed at an average follow-up of 9.6 years. At the time of follow-up one patient was active in top sports, seven patients in normal sport, two patients were members in a sports-club and one patien

BACKGROUND: Scheuermann's kyphosis is an uncommon autosomal dominant disease that manifests as a progressive thoracic skeletal deformity. It can lead to severe restrictive lung disease or predispose to spinal cord injury (SCI). Neurologic sequelae are rarely reported in the literature.
METHOD: Case Presentation
SUMMARY: A 47-year-old man sustained a cervical SCI requiring surgical anterior fusion and reoperation for fracture of the affected vertebra. One year after SCI, he presented with further kyphotic progression and cervical spine instability. Clinical presentation and family history led

We reviewed the records of 212 patients with idiopathic or Scheuermann-type juvenile kyphosis (Scheuermann's disease). The 200 patients available for follow-up were divided into three groups depending on the degree of angular deformity, and the influence of different variables on treatment outcome in each group was investigated. A very influential positive variable was combined treatment with a body cast plus brace; exercise treatment also produced acceptable results. Other variables that positively influenced the outcome of treatment were compliance with treatment, and (unexpectedly) elevated

BACKGROUND: Scheuermann's disease is the most common cause of hyperkyphosis of the thoracic spine during the adolescence period. It causes neck and lower back pain, restriction of lung expansion, traction of the spinal cord, increased vulnerability to vertebral fracture, and a hump. Patients with curves < 60° are treated conservatively, while surgery is used for patients with curves > 60°. The purpose of this prospective cohort study was to assess the quality of life and functional changes in conservatively or surgically treated Scheuermann's disease patients with a curve size of 50°-65° in no

The three-dimensional nature of the idiopathic spinal deformity has been investigated in cadaveric specimens and patients with both idiopathic scoliosis and idiopathic kyphosis (Scheuermann's disease). In both scoliotic and kyphotic deformities the essential lesion lies in the sagittal plane with apical vertebral wedging. In idiopathic scoliosis there is an apical lordosis which being biomechanically unstable rotates to the side to produce a scoliotic deformity as a secondary component. In contradistinction the kyphotic wedging process of Scheuermann's disease is mechanically stable and any as

Scheuermann's disease is the most common cause of structural kyphosis in adolescents. The kyphotic deformity is frequently attributed to "poor posture," resulting in delayed diagnosis and treatment. Indications for treatment remain somewhat debated, because the true natural history of the disease has not been clearly defined. Brace treatment is almost always successful in patients with kyphosis between 55 degrees and 80 degrees if the diagnosis is made before skeletal maturity. Kyphosis greater than 80 degrees in the thoracic spine or 65 degrees in the thoracolumbar spine is almost never treat

Familial occurrence of Scheuermann's juvenile kyphosis is well known, but no specific mode of inheritance has been recognized. We describe five families in which the disease seems to follow and autosomal dominant pattern of inheritance.

Three children, a 13-year-old boy and a 3-year-old and 6-year-old girl, were presented to the hospital with back pain, caused by Scheuermann's disease, spondylodiscitis and sickle cell disease, respectively. The boy with Scheuermann's disease received exercise therapy, the spondylodiscitis was treated with antibiotic therapy and the girl with sickle cell disease was given hyperhydration and folic acid. Although back pain is a common problem in children and teenagers, it is infrequently reported in the clinic. In contrast to back pain in adults, the same complaint in childhood is more often cau

The authors have observed 15 cases of progressive anterior vertebral fusion in patients involved with so-called Scheuermann's disease. The congenital origin of the lesion is discussed. The ossification was sometimes delayed and appeared only during the growth spurt.
