Scimitar syndrome is a rare variant of partial anomalous pulmonary venous return. The syndrome consists of a right-sided abnormal lung segment that is directly supplied by arteries from the aorta and has an anomalous venous drainage to the inferior vena cava. Three cases of left-sided scimitar syndrome have been reported in the literature, but it has not yet been associated with venous drainage to the azygos vein. Herein we report a left-sided scimitar syndrome with anomalous venous drainage to the azygos vein.

We present a case of a 79-year-old African-American woman with scimitar syndrome and associated dextrocardia. This case represents, to our knowledge, the oldest living patient described in the literature with scimitar syndrome.

Scimitar syndrome is a rare congenital disorder. It is characterized by partial or total abnormal venous drainage of the right lung into the inferior vena cava, which is often associated with anomalous systemic arterial supply to the right lung, congenital cardiac anomalies, hypoplasia of the right lung and bronchial anomalies. Symptoms depend on the degree of the shunt and severity of the associated anomalies, which determine the treatment. We present a 6-year-old boy who was diagnosed as having the adult form of scimitar syndrome during evaluation for recurrent pulmonary infections, and unde…

BACKGROUND: Scimitar syndrome is characterized by an anomalous pulmonary vein draining into the inferior vena cava and visible roentgenographically as a crescentic shadow of vascular density along the right border of the cardiac silhouette. The aim of this study is to report four cases associated with anatomical or functional absence of the right pulmonary artery.
CASE REPORTS: Diagnosis of scimitar syndrome had been made in 4 patients aged 3, 10, 23 and 33 years. Pulmonary scintigraphy and/or CT scan detected the scimitar syndrome and the type of pulmonary and systemic vascularization. In al…

The authors report the results of a cooperative study of 37 operated cases of the scimitar syndrome. The diagnostic procedures, the operative indications, the surgical indications, the postoperative complications and the long-term outcome were reviewed. The results were disappointing irrespective of the surgical technique that was used (reimplantation of the right pulmonary veins in the left atrium, lobectomy, pneumonectomy). Only 12 patients had a satisfactory postoperative outcome and good long-term results; 21 patients had long-term chronic respiratory failure with a reduced exercise capaci…

INTRODUCTION: Scimitar syndrome, or congenital venolobar syndrome, is a rare congenital heart condition that typically involves partial anomalous pulmonary venous drainage (PAPVD) of the right lung, right lung hypoplasia, and dextroposition of the heart. The incidence is estimated to be between 1 and 3 cases per 100 000 live births. Most patients present with cardiopulmonary symptoms, though rare cases may involve gastrointestinal (GI) complications. We report a unique case of Scimitar syndrome in a 10-year-old boy presenting with hematemesis due to esophageal varices.

Scimitar syndrome is a rare congenital cardiac malformation defined as an anomalous pulmonary venous return from the right lung to the inferior vena cava. In adult patients, the surgical strategy chosen is very important because of concomitant diseases and conditions. Herein, we present a case in which a minimally invasive approach was successful for treating a combination of the adult form of the scimitar syndrome and severe degenerative mitral regurgitation.

Anormal drainage of the pulmonary veins into the inferior vena cava is known as scimitar syndrome. Scimitar syndrome often presents during infancy and rarely during adulthood, and the adult patients are mostly asymptomatic. It is usually in association with dextrocardia, hypoplasia of right lung, and congenital heart defects. However, interruption of inferior vena cava with azygous continuation is rarely associated with this syndrome.

OBJECTIVES: We sought to evaluate the impact of interruption of anomalous systemic arterial supply (ASAS) on clinical course and management outcome of scimitar syndrome (SS) presenting during infancy.
BACKGROUND: No systematic study has been reported so far on this subject, although there are conflicting sporadic reports indicating variable effect.
METHODS: Out of 23 children diagnosed to have SS during the past 25 years, 16 symptomatic infants had ASAS. After interrupting ASAS (coil embolization -14, surgical ligation -2), they were prospectively followed up to define their clinical course …

Scimitar syndrome is a congenital cardiac anomaly characterized by anomalous venous drainage of the right lung into the inferior vena cava. We report the combination of scimitar syndrome and mitral regurgitation and describe port-access correction for the adult form by means of an intraatrial baffle combined with mitral valve repair. Related considerations and modifications required in the standard Heartport (Cardiovations, Somerville, NJ) technique are discussed.

Anomalous pulmonary venous drainage from the right lung to the inferior vena cava (scimitar syndrome) is a rare finding. This paper briefly discusses this syndrome and presents a case of anomalous pulmonary venous return to both the superior and the inferior cavae, which was corrected with a combined extracardiac and intracardiac approach. Polytetrafluoroethylene was utilized for reconstruction of pathways to the left atrium. To our knowledge, this is the first time this technique has been used to correct this anomaly.

A 57-year-old woman suffering from recurrent pneumonia and considered to be high risk for surgical correction of an atrial septal defect (ASD) associated with a right lung sequestration vascularized by arteries coming from the abdominal aorta and an abnormal venous drainage into the inferior vena cava (Scimitar syndrome). Therefore stepwise transcatheter approach was offered as an alternative treatment. We performed ASD closure and embolization of the anomalous systemic arterial supply using Amplatzer Vascular Plugs II. The abnormal venous drainage was conservatively treated (Q(p) /Q(s) : 1.1/…

Scimitar syndrome is characterized by anomalous pulmonary venous drainage of a part or the whole of the right lung into the inferior vena cava (IVC). It is extremely uncommon in scimitar syndrome for the pulmonary veins to drain anomalously to a site other than the IVC. The following case report describes an otherwise classical scimitar syndrome with anomalous drainage of the right lung cephalad into the right atrium near its junction with the superior vena cava.

Seven years after surgical correction of Scimitar syndrome, a 19-year-old patient complained of progressive dyspnea and tachycardia. Transthoracic echocardiography revealed a mass compressing the right ventricle. Magnetic resonance tomogram showed its exact retrosternal location and nature. A computed tomography-guided drainage decompressed the mass. Because of cystic wall persistence, a surgical extirpation of the whole cystic cavity was deemed necessary.
