Measuring Hostile Interpretation Bias: The WSAP-Hostility Scale.

Hostile interpretation biases are central to the development and maintenance of anger, yet have been inconsistently assessed. The Word Sentence Association Paradigm (WSAP) was used to develop a new measure of hostile interpretation biases, the WSAP-Hostility. Study 1 examined the factor structure and internal consistency of the WSAP-Hostility, as well as its relationship with trait anger. Study 2 provided convergent and divergent validity data by examining its associations with trait anger, aggression, depression, and anxiety. Study 3 examined the relationship between WSAP-Hostility and anothe

Rate of dyspareunia after delivery in primiparae according to mode of delivery.

OBJECTIVES: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the influence of mode of delivery on sexual function. DESIGN: One thousand six hundred and thirteen questionnaires containing 16 questions about sexual behavior and dyspareunia before, during and after pregnancy were sent out to primiparous, ethnically homogeneous (fluent in German) patients who delivered in a large tertiary referral center between 6 months and 2(1/2) year before. The returned questionnaires were merged to clinical data from our obstetric database in an anonymous fashion. The patients were subdivided into four groups (A) "

Three-dimensional ultrasound in the evaluation of fetal anomalies.

OBJECTIVES: To determine the additional information and clinical impact provided by three-dimensional ultrasound (3D US) imaging of fetal anomalies compared to conventional 2-dimensional ultrasound (2D US). MATERIALS AND METHODS: Sixty-three patients with 103 anomalies were scanned prospectively with both 2D and 3D US. Each anomaly was reviewed by one or more fetal imaging specialists to determine whether the 3D US data were advantageous, equivalent, or disadvantageous when compared with 2D US images. Clinical impact and pathologic or clinical outcome were determined in all cases. RESULTS: T

Heredity in dementia of the Alzheimer type.

Family, twin and linkage studies in Alzheimer's disease are reviewed. Several of these studies appear to be burdened with sources of error, mainly related to sampling and clinical diagnoses. It was previously thought that early-onset cases of Alzheimer's disease were heavily genetically influenced, whereas late-onset cases were sporadic. The author questions whether this difference is mainly due to methodological error.

The grief response to mid-trimester fetal loss.

This descriptive study examines the grief response of mothers who experienced a fetal loss in the middle trimester of pregnancy. Twenty mothers who lost a baby through spontaneous abortion or perinatal death within 1 year participated in this study. Data were collected by mailed questionnaires. All characteristics typical of the grief response were identified, including despair, anger or hostility, guilt, loss of control, rumination, depersonalization, somatization, and death anxiety. Comparison of the study population to a group of parents who suffered the loss of a child and to a group of wo

Gradient boosting machine for survival prediction in studies with general failure-time outcome-dependent sampling design.

Outcome-dependent sampling (ODS) designs are widely used in epidemiological and biomedical research as cost-effective alternatives to full cohort studies. While existing research has focused on parameter estimation and inference under specific models, survival prediction in ODS settings remains underexplored. In this paper, we propose a gradient boosting machine tailored for survival prediction in studies conducted using general failure-time ODS designs. Our approach integrates a weighting scheme to correct for sampling bias and improves predictive accuracy. We introduce a weighted empirical r

Coverage-based rarefaction and extrapolation: standardizing samples by completeness rather than size.

We propose an integrated sampling, rarefaction, and extrapolation methodology to compare species richness of a set of communities based on samples of equal completeness (as measured by sample coverage) instead of equal size. Traditional rarefaction or extrapolation to equal-sized samples can misrepresent the relationships between the richnesses of the communities being compared because a sample of a given size may be sufficient to fully characterize the lower diversity community, but insufficient to characterize the richer community. Thus, the traditional method systematically biases the degre

Relationship of trait anger to resting blood pressure: a meta-analysis.

A series of meta-analyses were conducted to assess whether anger is related to essential hypertension. The present review also considered the relevance of the distinction between anger experience and anger expression, the effect of participant selection bias, and the white-coat hypertension effect for the anger-blood pressure (BP) association. Anger experience was correlated with elevated BP, but the relationship was small and highly variable. When positive effects emerged, both participant selection and the reliability of BP measurement posed interpretational problems. Persons high in anger a…

Evaluating the Validity of a Two-stage Sample in a Birth Cohort Established from Administrative Databases.

BACKGROUND: When using administrative databases for epidemiologic research, a subsample of subjects can be interviewed, eliciting information on undocumented confounders. This article presents a thorough investigation of the validity of a two-stage sample encompassing an assessment of nonparticipation and quantification of the extent of bias. METHODS: Established through record linkage of administrative databases, the Québec Birth Cohort on Immunity and Health (n = 81,496) aims to study the association between Bacillus Calmette-Guérin vaccination and asthma. Among 76,623 subjects classified i

Implicit attentional biases in a changing environment.

The current study investigates whether statistical regularities that change over time affect attentional selection. While searching for a target singleton, the distractor singleton was presented much more often in one location than in all other locations. Crucially, the location that had a distractor much more often, changed to new locations during the course of the experiment. Here we established exactly how the bias of attention followed these changes in the display. Unlike previous studies, we show that selection was remarkably flexible as the attentional bias followed the changes in the en

Strategies of the management of pulmonary metastases in children with Ewing sarcoma- single institution experience of 137 patients.

BACKGROUND: The role of pulmonary metastasectomy in pediatric Ewing sarcoma remains controversial, with significant treatment selection bias complicating the interpretation of retrospective series. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate treatment outcomes in isolated pulmonary metastases (PM) using propensity score analysis to control for selection bias. METHODS: Retrospective analysis of 137 patients with pulmonary metastases (85 isolated PM, 52 PM with extrapulmonary metastases) treated between 1998 and 2024. Primary comparison focused on thoracotomy alone versus radiotherapy alone in isolated PM patients…

Comprehensive Analysis of Synonymous Codon Usage Bias for Complete Genomes and E2 Gene of Atypical Porcine Pestivirus.

Atypical porcine pestivirus (APPV) is an emerging novel pestivirus causing the congenital tremor (CT) in piglets. The worldwide distribution characteristic of APPV make it a threat to global swine health. E2 is the major envelope glycoprotein of APPV and the crucial target for vaccine development. Considering the genetic variability of APPV complete genomes and its E2 gene as well as gaps for codon analysis, a comprehensive analysis of codon usage patterns was performed. Relative synonymous codon usage (RSCU) and effective number of codon (ENC) analyses showed that a relatively instable change
