Daily and event-level dynamics of self-concept clarity and emotion regulation during the college transition: a 21-day diary study.

This 21-day diary study tracked 134 first-year college students (2,750 observations) to examine how self-concept clarity (SCC) and emotion regulation strategies (ERS) dynamically interact across daily and event timescales during the transition to college. Using multilevel vector autoregressive models, we distinguished between event-level and day-level processes. At the daily level, SCC was concurrently associated with greater acceptance and lower rumination but did not predict next-day ERS use, whereas distraction and a greater number of strategies predicted higher next-day SCC. At the event l

How does psychiatric diagnosis affect young people's self-concept and social identity? A systematic review and synthesis of the qualitative literature.

Receiving a psychiatric diagnosis in childhood or adolescence can have numerous social, emotional and practical repercussions. Among the most important of these are the implications for a young person's self-concept and social identity. To ensure diagnoses are communicated and managed in a way that optimally benefits mental health trajectories, understanding young people's first-hand experience of living with a diagnosis is paramount. This systematic review collates, evaluates and synthesises the qualitative research that has explored how psychiatric diagnosis interacts with young people's sel

Internship engagement as a predictive pathway between an academic self-concept proxy and employability outcomes: evidence from a public undergraduate employability dataset.

BACKGROUND: Employability competencies in higher education reflect both academic indicators and experiential learning. This study examines whether a behavioral internship-engagement proxy provides a predictive indirect pathway between an academic self-concept proxy and employability outcomes using the Hierarchical Attention Mediated Employability Network (HAMEN). Because the source data are cross-sectional and observational, mediation is interpreted strictly as an associational predictive decomposition rather than a causal mechanism. METHODS: A secondary analysis was conducted on a publicly a

Ayahuasca Improves Self-perception of Speech Performance in Subjects With Social Anxiety Disorder: A Pilot, Proof-of-Concept, Randomized, Placebo-Controlled Trial.

BACKGROUND: Ayahuasca is a classic hallucinogen with anxiolytic and antidepressive properties. Anecdotal evidence also suggests that it improves performance (eg, singing, speech). This controlled trial assessed the effects of ayahuasca on speech performance and anxiety in individuals with social anxiety disorder. METHODS: Seventeen volunteers with social anxiety disorder participated in a pilot, proof-of-concept, randomized, parallel-group trial. Self-perception of performance during a public-speaking test was assessed with the Self-statements During Public Speaking Scale primary outcome). Se

Emotional Congruence with Children: Are Implicit and Explicit Child-Like Self-Concept and Attitude Toward Children Associated with Sexual Offending Against Children?

Some men convicted of sexual offences against children express an exaggerated affiliation with childhood, ascribe child-like characteristics to themselves, experience strong non-sexual liking of children, and hold positive views of children and childhood. These features are generally called emotional congruence with children. The present study examined child-like self-concept, which is an association of self with children and child-like characteristics, attitude toward children, and general emotional congruence with children as correlates of sexual offending against children and pedophilia. Using photo-elicitation and interpretative phenomenological analysis to explore possessions as links to self-concept and the identities of others in hoarding disorder.

OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study was to explore the importance of possessions as extensions of self-concept and connections to significant others for people that hoard. DESIGN: A total of 10 participants were recruited through hoarding group treatment programmes. Participants photographed significant possessions in their home and discussed these in semi-structured interviews. RESULTS: Analysis of transcripts using interpretative phenomenological analysis revealed three interrelated superordinate themes: (1) time travels with you; (2) possessions are me, they're a reflection of my life; and

The effects of family configuration and support system failures during childhood and adolescence on college students' self-concepts and social skills.

This study examined the differential effects of familial configuration and support system failures in a sample of 256 college students. Regarding familial configuration, the results indicated that individuals who had experienced parental divorce were significantly more likely to have encountered parental hostility and/or lack of care, inadequate supervision when not in school, lack of concern by teachers, and more financial hardship. In turn, lower self-concepts and/or social skills were found to be associated with these kinds of life experiences (i.e., support system failures).

Art-Based Intervention to Promote Psychological Adjustment, Self-Concept, and Quality of Life in Children: Protocol for a Cluster Nonrandomized Controlled Trial.

BACKGROUND: Children's mental health is a critical public health priority, with approximately 8% of children aged 10 years or younger experiencing mental, behavioral, or emotional disorders. Despite evidence supporting early intervention, access to mental health services remains limited, particularly for socioeconomically disadvantaged populations. Art-based interventions have emerged as promising approaches to support mental health and socioemotional development. However, significant gaps persist in understanding their efficacy, scalability, and long-term impact. OBJECTIVE: This study aims t

A Personal Health System for Self-Management of Congestive Heart Failure (HeartMan): Development, Technical Evaluation, and Proof-of-Concept Randomized Controlled Trial.

BACKGROUND: Congestive heart failure (CHF) is a disease that requires complex management involving multiple medications, exercise, and lifestyle changes. It mainly affects older patients with depression and anxiety, who commonly find management difficult. Existing mobile apps supporting the self-management of CHF have limited features and are inadequately validated. OBJECTIVE: The HeartMan project aims to develop a personal health system that would comprehensively address CHF self-management by using sensing devices and artificial intelligence methods. This paper presents the design of the sy

Reading Self-Concept and Reading Anxiety in Second Grade Children: The Roles of Word Reading, Emergent Literacy Skills, Working Memory and Gender.

Background: Most studies in the field of reading have focused on the linguistic and cognitive factors. Less is known about the affective aspects of reading in young readers, such as self-perceptions of reading, and reading anxiety. Aims: This study aimed to shed light on the direct and indirect relations between reading and related skills (working memory, emergent literacy skills, word reading accuracy and rate, and gender) as sources of reading affect (reading self-concept and anxiety). Sample: A total of 115 Hebrew speaking second graders participated in this study. Methods: A set of measure

Transposition of the paraclival carotid artery: a novel concept of self-retaining vascular retraction during endoscopic endonasal skull base surgery technical report.

BACKGROUND: Fixed retraction of the internal carotid artery (ICA) has previously been described for use during transcranial microscopic surgery. We report the novel use of a self-retaining microvascular retractor for static repositioning and protection of the ICA during expanded endonasal endoscopic approaches to the paramedian skull base. METHODS: The transmaxillary, transpterygoid approach was performed in five cadaver heads (ten sides). The self-retaining microvascular retractor was used to laterally reposition the pterygopalatine fossa contents during exposure of the pterygoid base/plates

Social phobia, anxiety, oppositional behavior, social skills, and self-concept in children with specific selective mutism, generalized selective mutism, and community controls.

We compared social phobia, anxiety, oppositional behavior, social skills, and self-concept in three groups: (1) 28 children with specific mutism (who did not speak to teachers but were more likely to speak to parents and peers at home and school); (2) 30 children with generalized mutism (whose speaking was restricted primarily to their homes); and (3) 52 community controls. Children with generalized mutism evidenced higher anxiety at school, and more separation anxiety, OCD, and depressive symptoms at home. Parents and teachers reported that the social phobia and anxiety scores of children in

Assessing the factorial invariance of Harter's self-concept measures: comparing preadolescents with and without spina bifida using child, parent, and teacher report.

The purpose of this study was to determine whether the structure of children's self-concept, as rated by children themselves on the Self-Perception Profile for Children (SPPC; Harter, 1985), and the structure of children's competence, as rated by their parents on the Rating Scale of Child's Actual Behavior (PRS) and teachers on the Rating Scale of Child's Actual Behavior (TRS; Harter, 1985), are similar across samples of children with and without spina bifida (children were 8 and 9 years of age; n = 68 in each sample). Using confirmatory factor analyses, results revealed that a multidimensiona

The impact of couple-focused counseling based on the Ex-PLISSIT model on the sexual self-concept of infertile couples: a randomized trial.

The negative impact of infertility and its treatments on sexual health is well-documented. Self-concept plays a crucial role in sexual behavior and overall sexual health. This study aims to investigate how couple-oriented counseling, using the Ex-Plissit model, can influence the sexual self-concept of infertile couples. This parallel-group randomized controlled clinical trial was conducted in Hamadan, Iran, at the infertility clinic of Fatemieh Hospital, from 2022 to 2023. One hundred twenty individuals (60 infertile couples) who referred to the clinic were randomly assigned to either the inte

Taking a Closer Look at Teacher Support and Children's Mental Health: The Mediating Role of Self-Concept and the Moderating Role of Area.

Ample evidence has recognized the importance of teacher support for children's mental health. However, less is known about the factors that may play a role in the association between teacher support and children's mental health. In the present study, we examined the mediating role of self-concept and the moderating role of area (i.e., rural vs. urban area) in the relationship between teacher support and children's mental health (i.e., depression and anxiety). We used a sample of Chinese elementary students who enrolled in grades 3 to 6 (N = 525, aged 8-13, 44.54% girls). Results showed that ch

Can digital self-screening improve identification of chronic dyspnoea in Australian general practice? A proof-of-concept protocol for the BREATHE SMART trial.

INTRODUCTION: Chronic dyspnoea is a prevalent and clinically significant symptom, often indicative of underlying cardiorespiratory disease. It is frequently under-reported by patients and under-recognised in primary care, with these challenges exacerbated in rural and remote communities where disease burden is greater and patients experience barriers to timely diagnosis and management. The BREATHE SMART trial aims to implement and evaluate an innovative, fully digital self-screening system for chronic dyspnoea, integrated into general practice workflows and information technology infrastructur

Investigation of Non-Pharmacological Distant Energy Therapy in Adults with Self-Perceived Mental and Psychological Health Problems: Proof-of-Concept Randomized Controlled Trial.

BACKGROUND: Biofield therapies like Reiki, blessing, and healing touch are non-invasive techniques that aim to enhance well-being-mental, emotional, and physical. They can be conducted both in-person and remotely. However, a literature review found no evidence of distant/remote blessing therapy's effectiveness in improving mental health symptoms in adults. PRIMARY STUDY OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the safety and effectiveness of non-pharmacological distant blessing (biofield energy healing) therapy for psychological and mental health management. METHODS/DESIGN: One hundred seventeen participants
