Motivation to Engage in Self-Care of Heart Failure: An Ecological Momentary Assessment.

BACKGROUND: Heart failure (HF) is associated with substantial morbidity and mortality worldwide. Although self-care is crucial for long-term HF management, individuals with HF often face challenges in maintaining self-care behaviors over time. This highlights the need to understand people's motivation to engage in self-care and how those motivations might change over time. Self-determination theory provides a valuable framework for understanding the link between motivation and self-care, but the specific conditions that shape this relationship in daily life remain uncertain. OBJECTIVES: An ec

Impact of COVID-19 on the Self-Report Assessment of Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder.

Background The COVID-19 pandemic and subsequent guidelines have had a substantial effect on social norms. This likely affected self-report assessment of psychopathology, namely those that assess obsessive-compulsive tendencies routinely used to screen for obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD). It was hypothesized that self-report assessment of OCD likely produces inflated, non-discriminating scale scores. Methods Data collection occurred prior to the COVID-19 pandemic with the aim of validating a new psychological test; however, data collection was abruptly halted in March 2020. Data collection

An ecological momentary assessment of OCD-relevant intrusions: Frequency, feared self, and concealment.

This study provides the first examination of the frequency, characteristics, and dynamics surrounding daily experiences of OCD-relevant intrusions among non-clinical participants (N = 54, Nobs = 2314) using ecological momentary assessment. It also examines the extent to which self-related constructs-participants' feared-self beliefs and their tendency to conceal aspects of self-relate to such intrusive phenomena. Participants completed a baseline questionnaire before reporting state depressed mood and intrusions up to five times per day (at semi-random intervals) for 14 days. Results suggest t

Bruxism awareness and self-assessment in dental clinical students: a questionnaire-based study.

BACKGROUND: Bruxism is a recurrent parafunctional habit characterized by clenching or grinding teeth and/or jaw contractions. It is quite common among dental students and is associated with psychosocial factors such as stress and anxiety. This study aimed to compare bruxism awareness and self-assessment among clinical students with and without bruxism. METHODS: This study included systemically healthy individuals aged 18 to 27 years. Intraoral and extraoral examinations were performed on 128 4th- and 5th-grade dental students with (64) and without bruxism (64), 4th and 5th-grade dental studen

Introducing a Simple Tool of Patient Self-Assessment of Wrist Range of Motion.

Hand disorders can reduce wrist range of motion (ROM). The SARS-CoV-2 pandemic highlighted challenges in routine follow-up exams, making telemedicine a viable solution. This study evaluates the feasibility and accuracy of patient self-measured wrist ROM using a self-designed goniometer template. The template was designed to measure flexion/extension and radial/ulnar abduction movements. A cohort of 50 adults (25 males/25 females) participated in this prospective study. The exclusion criteria included wrist immobilization and ages outside of 18-65 years. Participants self-assessed their wrist R

Self-Assessment of INTERHEART Risk Stratification among the Middle-Aged Community in Malaysia.

Research background and Objectives: Age is an independent risk factor for cardiovascular disease (CVD), but CVD risk factors are preventable, and lack of awareness of its risk factors is a contributing factor to CVDs. Middle-aged people may be more likely to engage in unhealthy lifestyle behaviours which can increase the risk of CVD. Health self-assessment is crucial for early detection and management of health issues and early lifestyle intervention for better personalised health management. This study aims to determine the self-assessment of INTERHEART risk classification among the middle-ag

Self Assessment Memory Scale (SAMS), a new simple method for evaluating memory function.

We have developed a new method for easy self-assessment of changes in memory recall impairment, which can be used during the very early stages of dementia. An 8-picture recall and a 16-word regression were assessed, respectively, and the index was calculated by adding up the ratio of correct responses to both tests. A total of 85 subjects including 12 MCI, 8 AD, and 65 older persons with normal cognitive function were evaluated, and the correlation with the WMS-R Logical Memory II score was examined. The results showed that there was a statistically significant correlation between the 8-pictur

Assessment of noncompliance in self-disclosure of deferrable risk behaviors among blood donors.

BACKGROUND: Blood transfusion services work to ensure universal accessibility of safe and effective blood products for transfusion to recipients. Failure of blood donors to disclose complete truthful information before blood donation is termed as noncompliance. Noncompliance in disclosing high-risk behaviors could compromise blood safety. This study aimed to assess the prevalence rate of noncompliance and assess the predictive factors and reasons for noncompliance. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Blood donors were asked to fill a postdonation anonymous questionnaire after obtaining consent and the res

Depression and Heart Failure Assessment, Treatment, and Interventions to Improve Self-Care Behaviors.

Many people with heart failure also have untreated depression. Because depression can lead to worse self-care and increased morbidity and mortality for patients with heart failure, identification and treatment are essential. Nurses in clinic and inpatient settings are uniquely positioned to implement depression screening and advocate for evidence-based treatment for heart failure patients with depression. Treatments may include pharmacologic therapies, cognitive behavioral therapy, exercise, including cardiac rehabilitation, and social support. Adequate screening, treatment, and education by n

Real-life self-control conflicts in anorexia nervosa: An ecological momentary assessment investigation.

BACKGROUND: Individuals with anorexia nervosa (AN) are often thought to show heightened self-control and increased ability to inhibit desires. In addition to inhibitory self-control, antecedent-focused strategies (e.g., cognitive reconstrual-the re-evaluation of tempting situations) might contribute to disorder maintenance and enable disorder-typical, maladaptive behaviors. METHODS: Over a period of 14 days, 40 acutely underweight young female patients with anorexia nervosa (AN) and 40 healthy control (HC) participants reported their affect and behavior in self-control situations via ecologic

Self-report versus clinician-ratings in the assessment of aggression in violent offenders.

BACKGROUND: The construct of aggression is central to work with violent offenders, but it is a broad construct that can be assessed by many different methods and instruments. Its measurement may, however, have profound implications for treatment planning. We need more knowledge about how different methods for assessing aggression relate to each other. AIMS: Our aims were to investigate, first, the convergence and concordance of two methods of assessing aggression: self-report and clinical assessment and, second, to determine the degree to which aggression can be discriminated from neighbourin

Dietary and symptom assessment in adults with self-reported non-coeliac gluten sensitivity.

BACKGROUND & AIMS: The mechanisms behind non-coeliac gluten sensitivity (NCGS) are not fully understood although clinical symptoms have shown to subside after wheat withdrawal. Self-prescription of a gluten-free diet (GFD) without medical supervision is common in NCGS subjects, resulting in dietary restrictions that can cause macro- and micronutrient deficiencies. The primary aim was to describe dietary intake, including FODMAP, in subjects with self-reported gluten sensitivity on GFD in whom coeliac disease (CD) and wheat allergy were excluded. Secondary, clinical symptoms and health-related

The concurrent validity of a Web-based self-report assessment for personality disorders.

Incorporating online tools in clinical practice could help improve routine assessments of personality disorders and their co-occurring clinical disorders. TeleScreen, a Web-based self-report questionnaire for DSM-IV disorders, has not yet been compared with well-validated structured interviews for clinical and personality disorders. Patients with personality disorders (n = 89) were assessed with TeleScreen and independently interviewed with Structured Clinical Interview for DSM-IV Axis-I disorders (SCID-I) and personality disorders (SCID-II). The concurrent validity was examined using sensitiv
