[The role of the prefrontal cortex in the sensory problems of children with autism spectrum disorder and its involvement in social aspects].

INTRODUCTION: In persons with autism spectrum disorders (ASD), aberrant sensory perceptions could be as characteristic and disruptive as the presence of anomalies in social communication and interaction or restricted and repetitive interests. Most of them present sensory modulation disorders (hyper- or hypo-responsiveness) in several sensory channels. Furthermore, there is a deficit in the integration of the information from a number of sensory systems (for example, auditory and visual). All this would worsen the core symptoms related with communication and increase the appearance of behaviour

Sensation seeking and impulsive traits as personality endophenotypes for antisocial behavior: Evidence from two independent samples.

Sensation seeking and impulsivity are personality traits that are correlated with risk for antisocial behavior (ASB). This paper uses two independent samples of twins to (a) test the extent to which sensation seeking and impulsivity statistically mediate genetic influence on ASB, and (b) compare this to genetic influences accounted for by other personality traits. In Sample 1, delinquent behavior, as well as impulsivity, sensation seeking and Big Five personality traits, were measured in adolescent twins from the Texas Twin Project. In Sample 2, adult twins from the Australian Twin Registry re

Reassessing referral of touch following peripheral deafferentation: The role of contextual bias.

Some amputees have been famously reported to perceive facial touch as arising from their phantom hand. These referred sensations have since been replicated across multiple neurological disorders and were classically interpreted as a perceptual correlate of cortical plasticity. Common to all these and related studies is that participants might have been influenced in their self-reports by the experimental design or related contextual biases. Here, we investigated whether referred sensations reports might be confounded by demand characteristics (e.g., compliance, expectation, suggestion). Unilat

Burning mouth syndrome (BMS): evaluation of thyroid and taste.

BACKGROUND: Burning mouth syndrome (BMS) is a chronic, intraoral burning sensation seen mainly in middle-aged and post-menopausal females, without identifiable oral lesions or abnormal laboratory findings, but often associated with psychogenic disorders such as depression. The latter can have a range of causes, including hormonal. OBJECTIVE: Since there may be connections between BMS, psychogenic changes, hormonal changes and taste abnormalities, we have examined aspects of taste and thyroid function. PATIENTS AND METHODS: We selected 50 patients with BMS (study group) and 50 healthy subject

Personality traits as prospective predictors of suicide attempts.

OBJECTIVE: To examine higher order personality factors of negative affectivity (NA) and disinhibition (DIS), as well as lower order facets of impulsivity, as prospective predictors of suicide attempts in a predominantly personality disordered sample. METHOD: Data were analyzed from 701 participants of the Collaborative Longitudinal Personality Disorders Study with available follow-up data for up to 7 years. Cox proportional hazards regression analyses was used to examine NA and DIS, and facets of impulsivity (e.g. urgency, lack of perseverance, lack of premeditation and sensation seeking), as

Lesion of the nucleus solitarius leads to impaired laryngeal sensation in bulbar palsy patients.

BACKGROUND: In order to clarify the laryngeal sensation of bulbar palsy patients, we studied the relationship between laryngopharyngeal sensation and brainstem lesion in patients with dysphagia caused by bulbar palsy. METHODS: Fifteen patients with lateral medullary infarction and dysphagia were included in this study. We performed laryngeal sensory test using the flexible laryngoscope and probes method previously developed by Yaguchi et al. The test sites included the right and left tip of the laryngeal surface of the epiglottis and bilateral arytenoid regions. Lesion sites were identified b

Anxiety sensitivity and panic disorder.

Anxiety sensitivity refers to fears of anxiety-related sensations. Most often measured by the Anxiety Sensitivity Index (ASI), anxiety sensitivity is a dispositional variable especially elevated in people with panic disorder. Regardless of diagnosis, ASI scores often predict panic symptoms in response to biological challenges (e.g., carbon dioxide inhalation) that provoke feared bodily sensations. Prospective longitudinal studies indicate that scores on the ASI predict subsequent spontaneous attacks, indicating that elevated anxiety sensitivity is a risk factor for panic and perhaps panic diso

Safety aspects of transcranial direct current stimulation concerning healthy subjects and patients.

Cortical excitability changes induced by tDCS and revealed by TMS, are increasingly being used as an index of neuronal plasticity in the human cortex. The aim of this paper is to summarize the partially adverse effects of 567 tDCS sessions over motor and non-motor cortical areas (occipital, temporal, parietal) from the last 2 years, on work performed in our laboratories. One-hundred and two of our subjects who participated in our tDCS studies completed a questionnaire. The questionnaire contained rating scales regarding the presence and severity of headache, difficulties in concentrating, acut

Evaluation of treatment of psychiatric morbidity among limb amputees.

BACKGROUND: The sudden jolt of becoming an amputee brings with it the realization of loss of independence and self-built psychological and physical security. Advances in the field of prosthesis give the individual hope for better future, but the presence of psychological morbidity is a hurdle to be crossed in the road to satisfactory rehabilitation. AIM: This study aimed to assess the psychiatric morbidity in amputees and the response to treatment. MATERIALS AND METHODS: One hundred newly amputated soldiers were assessed by means of clinical interview, General Health Questionnaire, Impact of

Complexity-based measures inform Tai Chi's impact on standing postural control in older adults with peripheral neuropathy.

BACKGROUND: Tai Chi training enhances physical function and may reduce falls in older adults with and without balance disorders, yet its effect on postural control as quantified by the magnitude or speed of center-of-pressure (COP) excursions beneath the feet is less clear. We hypothesized that COP metrics derived from complex systems theory may better capture the multi-component stimulus that Tai Chi has on the postural control system, as compared with traditional COP measures. METHODS: We performed a secondary analysis of a pilot, non-controlled intervention study that examined the effects

Renal infarction in vascular Ehlers-Danlos syndrome masquerading as pyelonephritis.

Symptoms associated with numerous diseases can be indistinguishable from those of the urinary system disorders because receptors of many visceral organs as well as the body wall transmit sensation through pain fibers shared with the kidneys. Disregarding important family background of genetic disorder can be detrimental for some patients.

[Fall risk and fracture. Falls and fractures in patients with neurological disorders].

Neurological disorders are frequently associated with risk factors for falls, such as gait and balance disorders, deficits of lower extremity strength, sensation and coordination, in addition to cognitive impairments. Patients with various kinds of neurological disorders, including Parkinson's disease, Parkinson's syndrome, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, peripheral neuropathy, stroke, etc, easily suffer from falls. To prevent falls among such patients, treatments of the underlying neurological diseases and assessments risk factors for falls are most important to cope effectively with these pat

Body-conscious Shakespeare: sensory disturbances in troubled characters.

It is widely accepted that Shakespeare was unique in the range of his insights into the human mind, but the way his characters reveal their mental states through bodily sensations has not been systematically explored. The author has searched for these phenomena in the 42 major works of Shakespeare and in 46 genre-matched works by his contemporaries, and in this paper the author focuses on sensory changes other than those involving vision, taste, the heart and the alimentary tract (all considered in other papers). Vertigo is experienced by five distressed Shakespearean characters, all men, but

The failure to detect drug-induced sensory loss in standard preclinical studies.

Over the years a number of drugs have been approved for human use with limited signs of toxicity noted during preclinical risk assessment study designs but then show adverse events in compliant patients taking the drugs as prescribed within the first few years on the market. Loss or impairments in sensory systems, such as hearing, vision, taste, and smell have been reported to the FDA or have been described in the literature appearing in peer-reviewed scientific journals within the first five years of widespread use. This review highlights the interactive cross-modal compensation within sensor
