Statistical power in UK genetic syndrome research; evidence from studies of Down syndrome, Fragile X syndrome and Williams syndrome as model syndrome groups.

Research on genetic syndromes is vital to our understanding of how development unfolds, but the rarity of genetic syndromes can mean that studies are carried out with small sample sizes. Small sample sizes can reduce the statistical power of a study to produce reliable and replicable results. Here, we review all UK journal articles on three target genetic syndromes published from 2013 to 2022. There were 368 eligible articles. The median sample size of genetic syndrome groups was N = 30, and only 6.5% of articles reported a power analysis. Power analysis was performed on the 123 articles class

Estimating the Number of HIV+ Latino MSM Using RDS, SS-PSE, and the Census.

This paper presents a method for estimating the overall size of a hidden population using results from a respondent driven sampling (RDS) survey. We use data from the Latino MSM Community Involvement survey (LMSM-CI), an RDS dataset that contains information collected regarding the Latino MSM communities in Chicago and San Francisco. A novel model is developed in which data collected in the LMSM-CI survey serves as a bridge for use of data from other sources. In particular, American Community Survey Same-Sex Householder data along with UCLA's Williams Institute data on LGBT population by count

Interrelationships between the size of the pancreas and the weight of patients with eating disorders.

OBJECTIVE: Starvation severely affects normal pancreatic function in children suffering from Kwashiorkor and in animals undergoing food deprivation. This study examines whether pancreatic size, as determined by ultrasound, is dependent on starvation or on eating patterns in patients with eating disorders. METHOD: In 109 inpatients with eating disorders, 86 with anorexia nervosa and 23 with bulimia nervosa, we determined the pancreatic size by means of abdominal ultrasonography before increase in weight. Twenty-four inpatients with other psychiatric disorders served as controls. Pancreatic siz

Cardiac fibroma in an infant: single ventricle palliation as a bridge to heart transplantation.

A prenatal echocardiogram revealed a large right ventricular mass. Following birth, there was obstruction to pulmonary blood flow and cyanosis. The tumor's size and location prevented resection. The patient underwent "single ventricle palliation," including placement of a systemic-to-pulmonary shunt as a newborn. This palliation served as a successful bridge to heart transplantation at 7 months of age. Pathologic examination revealed cardiac fibroma.

The Relationship Between Tumor Size and Electrocardiographic Findings in Carotid Body Paragangliomas: A Retrospective Observational Study.

OBJECTIVE: Carotid body tumors (CBTs) are rare neurogenic tumors that may indirectly affect cardiac autonomic regulation. This study aims to investigate the relationship between tumor size and electrocardiographic (ECG) findings, particularly the corrected QT (QTc) interval. METHODS: This retrospective study included 21 patients with histologically or radiologically confirmed CBTs treated at a tertiary center between 2021 and 2025. Patients with comorbidities or medications affecting cardiac conduction were excluded. Tumor sizes were measured via contrast-enhanced computed tomography or magne

The Effect of Intraoperative Glove Choice on Carpal Tunnel Pressure.

Introduction The aim of this study was to quantify the effect of surgical gown and glove wear on carpal tunnel pressure. The authors hypothesized that gowning and gloving is associated with an increase in carpal tunnel pressure in cadaveric specimens wearing appropriately sized gloves. Furthermore, they hypothesized that increased glove thickness, double gloving, and smaller-than-appropriately sized gloves would all serve to increase carpal tunnel pressure. Materials and Methods Baseline carpal tunnel pressure measurements were obtained in 11 cadaveric specimens. Each specimen was subsequently

Proposal of Patescibacterium danicum gen. nov., sp. nov. in the ubiquitous bacterial phylum Patescibacteriota phyl. nov.

Candidatus Patescibacteria is a diverse bacterial phylum that is notable for members with ultrasmall cell size, reduced genomes, limited metabolic capabilities, and dependence on other prokaryotic hosts. Despite the prevalence of the name Ca. Patescibacteria in the scientific literature, it is not officially recognized under the International Code of Nomenclature of Prokaryotes and lacks a nomenclatural type. Here, we rectify this situation by describing two closely related circular metagenome-assembled genomes and by proposing one of them (ABY1TS) to serve as the nomenclatural type for the sp

Prognostic Value of Preoperative Serum Carcinoembryonic Antigen for Overall Survival and Recurrence-Free Survival in Resectable Thymic Epithelial Tumors.

Introduction: Tumor markers have been shown to be closely related to the long-term survival of patients with cancer and the recurrence of various malignant tumors. However, their role in thymic epithelial tumors (TETs) remains to be elucidated. We aimed to investigate whether the preoperative tumor biomarkers carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA) and neuron-specific enolase (NSE) could serve as independent predictors of postoperative prognosis in patients with TETs. Materials and Methods: We retrospectively included a total of 111 patients with TETs who underwent thymectomy at our hospital. Cox regre

Pea Protein Nanoemulsion Effectively Stabilizes Vitamin D in Food Products: A Potential Supplementation during the COVID-19 Pandemic.

Vitamin D deficiency is a global issue which has been exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic-related lockdowns. Fortification of food staples with vitamin D provides a solution to alleviate this problem. This research explored the use of pea protein nanoemulsion (PPN) to improve the stability of vitamin D in various food products. PPN was created using a pH-shifting and ultrasonication combined method. The physicochemical properties were studied, including particle size, foaming ability, water holding capacity, antioxidant activity, and total phenolic contents. The fortification of several food

Sexual selection targets cetacean pelvic bones.

Male genitalia evolve rapidly, probably as a result of sexual selection. Whether this pattern extends to the internal infrastructure that influences genital movements remains unknown. Cetaceans (whales and dolphins) offer a unique opportunity to test this hypothesis: since evolving from land-dwelling ancestors, they lost external hind limbs and evolved a highly reduced pelvis that seems to serve no other function except to anchor muscles that maneuver the penis. Here, we create a novel morphometric pipeline to analyze the size and shape evolution of pelvic bones from 130 individuals (29 specie

Biocompatibility of PLGA/sP(EO-stat-PO)-coated mesh surfaces under constant shearing stress.

BACKGROUND: In order to allow inflammatory response modification and ultimately improvement in tissue remodeling, we developed a new surface modification for meshes that will serve as a carrier for other substances. Biocompatibility is tested in an animal model. METHODS: The animal model for diaphragmatic hernia repair was established in prior studies. Meshes were surface modified with star-configured PEO (polyethylene oxide)-based molecules [sP(EO-stat-PO)]. An electrospun nanoweb of short-term absorbable PLGA (polylactide-co-glycolide) with integrated sP(EO-stat-PO) molecules was applied on

Defining "enlarged" sentinel lymph nodes in the setting of endometrial cancer: What is the size cut-off?

BACKGROUND: Sentinel lymph node (SLN) mapping has become standard-of-care in endometrial cancer surgical staging. While removal of "enlarged" lymph nodes is recommended regardless of SLN mapping, there is no data to support definitive size criteria for intra-operative assessment. We sought to assess the size of negative and positive SLN in surgically-staged endometrial cancer patients. METHODS: Surgically-staged endometrial cancer patients undergoing SLN assessment of at least one hemipelvis at a single comprehensive cancer center were retrospectively reviewed from 2017 to 2020. SLN were cate

Multimodal Body Representation of Obese Children and Adolescents before and after Weight-Loss Treatment in Comparison to Normal-Weight Children.

OBJECTIVE: The aim of the study was to investigate whether obese children and adolescents have a disturbed body representation as compared to normal-weight participants matched for age and gender and whether their body representation changes in the course of an inpatient weight-reduction program. METHODS: Sixty obese (OBE) and 27 normal-weight (NW) children and adolescents (age: 9-17) were assessed for body representation using a multi-method approach. Therefore, we assessed body size estimation, tactile size estimation, heartbeat detection accuracy, and attitudes towards one's own body. OBE

Bimetallic Cu-Rh Nanoparticles on Diazonium-Modified Carbon Powders for the Electrocatalytic Reduction of Nitrates.

4-Benzenethiol-functionalized high-surface-area graphite powder was prepared and decorated with bimetallic Cu100-xRhx nanoparticles (NPs) to serve as electrocatalysts for the reduction of nitrates. In the first step, the HSAG powder was grafted with in-situ-generated diazonium compounds from 4-aminothiophenol (ATP) in an acidic medium using NaNO2 for the diazotization process. The surface composition was tuned using different initial quantities of ATP. The surface XPS-determined S/C atomic ratio was found to increase stepwise with the initial quantity of amine. In a second step, the grafted an

Endoreduplication underlies body size variation in monomorphic ants.

BACKGROUND: In ants, morphological variation is particularly important, as it constitutes a key mechanism underlying the division of labor. Despite this, relatively few studies have addressed the proximate cellular mechanisms responsible for worker size variation. Endoreduplication represents a promising contributor to morphological diversity, as it is a process with a well-established cellular basis. METHODS: In this study, we investigated whether endoreduplication can account for variation in body size in monomorphic ants, analogous to patterns previously reported in polymorphic species. We

A Bayesian Adaptive Design for Assessing Treatment Effect Consistency in Bridging Studies.

Bridging studies serve as an efficient approach to evaluate the applicability of findings from an original study to a new population. We propose a Bayesian adaptive design for bridging studies with time-to-event endpoints, aiming to assess the consistency of treatment effects with those observed in the original study. The design adopts a group sequential framework, using posterior probabilities at interim and final analyses to evaluate the evidence for consistency between the bridging and original studies. If strong evidence of consistency or inconsistency is observed, the trial may be stopped

Sulfate aerosol as a potential transport medium of radiocesium from the Fukushima nuclear accident.

To date, areas contaminated by radionuclides discharged from the Fukushima Dai-ichi nuclear power plant accident have been mapped in detail. However, size of the radionuclides and their mixing state with other aerosol components, which are critical in their removal from the atmosphere, have not yet been revealed. We measured activity size distributions of (134)Cs and (137)Cs in aerosols collected 47 days after the accident at Tsukuba, Japan, and found that the activity median aerodynamic diameters of (134)Cs and (137)Cs in the first sample (April 28-May 12) were 0.54 and 0.53 μm, respectively,

Nutritional Characteristics of Menus in State Prisons.

Nutrition-related health disparities plague prisons in the United States. Unregulated and inadequate prison menus may contribute to noncommunicable chronic health conditions in this vulnerable population. The purpose of this research was to assess nutrition offerings provided by prison menus. Researchers requested the most current version of all master menus and associated nutrition analyses for gendered and age-centric (pediatric vs geriatric) menus. Menu and nutrient data were extracted and entered into a spreadsheet for analysis. Prisons serve gendered or nongendered menus to the general po

Variation in Post-Cardiac Arrest Care Within a Regional EMS System.

Objective: Within Emergency Medical Systems (EMS) regional systems, there may be significant differences in the approach to patient care despite efforts to promote standardization. Identifying hospital-level factors that contribute to variations in care can provide opportunities to improve patient outcomes. The purpose of this analysis was to evaluate variation in post-cardiac arrest care within a large EMS system and explore the contribution of hospital-level factors. Methods: This was a retrospective analysis from a regional cardiac system serving over 10 million persons. Patients with out-o
