METHODS: Sixteen patients (5 with parotid and 11 with submandibular sialolithiasis) were treated with a stone retrieval catheter (Dormia basket) under fluoroscopy. Digital subtraction sialography (DSS) and direct digital dental imaging (RVG) were performed in addition for 11 of the cases (DSS for 7 and RVG for 4 cases).

Twelve of 25 patients with mixed connective tissue disease complained of xerostomia and/or ocular symptoms of keratoconjunctivitis sicca. Transoral removal of a distal salivary stone is common. We have used postoperative sialography to evaluate the results and changes in the salivary ducts after removal of a salivary distal stone without sialodochoplasty. Of 20 patients who had had transoral operations for submandibular stones, 19 recovered normally with no recurrence. One developed partial stenosis and one a spontaneous neo-opening as a result of severe adhesions and inflammation between the salivary stone and the duct. The histopathological diagnosis 'benign lympho-epithelial lesion' characterizes the major salivary gland disease in Sjögren's syndrome.
