First Indications of Omsk Haemorrhagic Fever Virus beyond Russia.

Omsk haemorrhagic fever virus (OHFV) is the agent leading to Omsk haemorrhagic fever (OHF), a viral disease currently only known in Western Siberia in Russia. The symptoms include fever, headache, nausea, muscle pain, cough and haemorrhages. The transmission cycle of OHFV is complex. Tick bites or contact with infected small mammals are the main source of infection. The Republic of Kazakhstan is adjacent to the endemic areas of OHFV in Russia and febrile diseases with haemorrhages occur throughout the country-often with unclear aetiology. In this study, we examined human cerebrospinal fluid sa…

Baltic lineage of tick-borne encephalitis virus: A putative evolutionary pathway.

Tick-borne encephalitis virus (TBEV) is transmitted by ixodid ticks and has three subtypes. The most genetically heterogeneous and widely distributed is the Siberian subtype which is subdivided into two main phylogenetic lineages, Asian (TBEV-SibAsia) and Baltic (TBEV-SibBaltic). According to the hypothesis of quantum evolution of TBEV (Kovalev et al., 2014b), TBEV-SibAsia originated about 370 years ago in Siberia, but the question concerning the time and place of origin of TBEV-SibBaltic is still to be solved. In the present paper, the sequences of a gene E fragment of 20 newly obtained TBEV-…

Histopathological, molecular, clinical and radiological characterization of rosette-forming glioneuronal tumor in the central nervous system.

BACKGROUND: Poor state of water supply systems, shortage of water purification facilities and disinfection systems, low quality of drinking water generally in Russia and particularly in the regions of the Russian Arctic, Siberia and Far East have been defined in the literature. However, no standard protocol of water security assessment has been used in the majority of studies. STUDY DESIGN AND METHODS: Uniform water security indicators collected from Russian official statistical sources for the period 2000-2011 were used for comparison for 18 selected regions in the Russian Arctic, Siberia an…

[High frequency of subtotal deletion of the Y-chromosome hetero-chromatin in Khanty from the lower Ob River area].

High frequency of the Y chromosome heterochromatin subtotal deletion, del(Y) (q12) has been detected in the course of cytogenetic study of Khanty from the lower Ob river in West Siberia. This deletion was found in 32 out of 154 males examined, i.e. in 20.8%. Taking into account a small size and a long distance isolation of the population, it has been concluded that the high frequency of the del(Y) (q12) is caused by genetic drift of the marker chromosome.

The "Ice Age" in Cardiac Surgery: Evolution of the "Siberian" Method of Brain Protection During Deep Hypothermic Perfusionless Circulatory Arrest.

Deep hypothermic perfusionless circulatory arrest was the first practical neuroprotective technique used for open-heart surgery. It was refined at the Novosibirsk Medical Research Center in Siberia and was actively used from the mid-1950s until 2001.This review describes the development of this technique and its contribution to our understanding of the dynamic changes in human physiology during induced hypothermia for circulatory arrest without extracorporeal perfusion. Deep hypothermic perfusionless circulatory arrest was an important stepping stone in the development of modern approaches in …

[Mathematical modeling and prognosis of incidence of enteric anthroponoses with aqueous route of transmission].

Using data on long-term dynamics of epidemic process of acute enteric infections enteric with aqueous route of transmission (typhoid fever, shigellosis caused by Shigella flexneri, hepatitis A, rotavirus gastroenteritis, etc.)the equation of regression was developed with the help of Chebyshev's polynoms. Predicted incidences of these infections for 2005 were on 61.2-99.5% in agree with the real ones on two territories of north region of West Siberia. Predicted incidence for 2006 is reflecting tendencies of epidemic process of mentioned infections.

Tick-borne Encephalitis: Stroke-like Presentation.

Tick-borne encephalitis, caused by the tick-borne virus (TBEV), is endemic in central, eastern, and northern Europe eastwards through Russian Siberia and China. For the year 2009, the highest incidence in Scandinavian countries was in Sweden. The clinical symptoms have a wide spectrum. We report a unique case of clinical symptoms and radiological findings compatible with a stroke-like inflammatory lesion in the thalamus, suggesting microangiopathy from TBEV. Our case shows that TBEV could be a possible cause of stroke-like lesions.

Hypolactasia in the indigenous populations of northern Russia.

The distribution of hypolactasia (PH) in the indigenous populations of the polar and related territories of the Russian Federation was investigated by an oral lactose tolerance. The frequency of hypolactasia in Kildin Saami population is 48%, Komi-Izhem-63%, Northern Mansi-71%, Northern Khanty-72%, West Siberia Nenets-78%. Generally hypolactasia frequencies in indigenous groups of Arctic and Sub-Arctic territories of Russia are higher than in the "reference" samples of Slav (Russian, 40-49%) and Permian Finn (Komi-Permiak and Udmurtian, 50-59%) groups.

The First Record of Omsk Hemorrhagic Fever Virus and Tick-Borne Encephalitis Virus of Baltic Lineage from the Kemerovo Region of Russia.

Objectives: Tick-borne encephalitis virus Siberian subtype (TBEV-Sib) and Omsk hemorrhagic fever virus (OHFV) are causative agents of natural focal infections in Western Siberia, Russia. The distribution of TBEV phylogenetic lineages and OHFV in the Kemerovo Region of Western Siberia remains poorly investigated. Methods: The phylogenetic analyses of fragment genome sequences 26 flaviviruses identified in 2019 were performed, and the amino acid variation was determined to reveal to which clusteron they belong. The age of Baltic and Asian lineages of the TBEV-Sib was calculated for Kemerovo Dist…

Omsk hemorrhagic fever virus is a tick-borne encephalitis virus adapted to muskrat through host-jumping.

Omsk hemorrhagic fever was first described in the early 1940s and is a natural focal infection, spread exclusively in four regions of Western Siberia, and associated with muskrat (Ondatra zibethicus). The etiological agent of this disease is the Omsk hemorrhagic fever virus (OHFV) which is closely related to the tick-borne encephalitis virus (TBEV), and its range entirely lies within the TBEV area. OHFV belongs to the mammalian tick-borne flaviviruses and the ecological group of arboviruses. The problem concerning the origin of OHFV remains unresolved to date. This study analyzed all nucleotid…

Pan-Continental Genomic Analysis of Eurasian Perch Uncovers Global Diversity Hotspots and Postglacial Recolonization Patterns.

The contemporary distribution of genetic diversity in widespread freshwater species reflects a complex interplay between historical processes and recent demographic events. We investigated the postglacial recolonization history of the Eurasian perch (Perca fluviatilis L.) across its native range spanning Europe and Western Siberia, aiming to understand how historical and recent demographic processes have shaped contemporary genetic diversity in a widespread freshwater species. Using an integrative genomic approach, we combined whole mitochondrial genome resequencing with nuclear SNP-array geno…

[Detection of Rickettsia hulinii in ticks of the Haemaphysalis concinna species in Russia].

The presence of Rickettsia hulinii was detected in ticks of the Haemaphysalis concinna species in the Asiatic part of Russia. It was the first detection of these rickettsiae outside the territory of the Chinese People's Republic. This tick is spread over a broken area and may occur in different regions of Eurasia. At present at least 3 rickettsial species of the tick-borne spotted fever group were found in Ixodes ticks on the territory of Eastern Siberia: R. sibirica, known to be the etiological agent of tick-borne rickettsiosis, R. hulinii with proved pathogenicity for laboratory animals and …

First Finding of a Representative of Giant Mustelids of the Genus Eomellivora (Carnivora, Mustelidae) in Russia (Tuva, Upper Miocene).

In the late Miocene deposits in the Taralik-Cher locality (Tuva Republic), fossil remains of a giant mustelid of the genus Eomellivora Zdansky, 1924 have been found. This finding is the first reliable evidence of the Eomellivora inhabiting the modern Russia. Teeth of the Eomelliovra from Taralik-Cher are similar in size to those of E. wimani and E. piveteaui from the late Miocene in Eurasia. The morphology of teeth of the material from Tuva is most similar to that of E. ursogulo; therefore, it is considered a small form of Eomellivora ursogulo. The described finding expands the understanding o

Pneumonic plague epidemic in Northeast China in 1910-1911: Dr. Wu Lien-Teh's epidemic preventive system for plague control.

Pneumonic plague that originated in Russian Siberia broke out in Northeast China in October 1910-March 1911. On the basis of field visits, autopsy, bacteriological identification, and close collaboration with local authorities and international colleagues, Dr. Wu Lien-Teh implemented a series of efficient antiplague measures, which successfully controlled the development of an extraordinary epidemic plague. In his subsequent work, Dr. Wu demonstrated the respiratory transmission of pneumonic plague and tarbagans' role in this spread. Dr.Wu's academic and cultural contributions are valuable in …

Genetic drift of marker Y chromosome del(Y)(q12) in Khanty from the lower Ob river.

A cytogenetic study of Khanty from the lower Ob river in West Siberia has detected a high frequency of the Y chromosome heterochromatin subtotal deletion--del(Y)(q12). This morphologically identical deletion was found in 32 of 154 males examined (20.8%). The carriers had 10 different surnames. Taking into account the small size, isolation by distance, and historical peculiarities of the surname formation of the population, it has been concluded that the high frequency of the del(Y)(q12) results from the genetic drift of the marker chromosome.
