Scintigraphic, histologic, and histomorphometric analyses of bovine bone mineral and autogenous bone mixture in sinus floor augmentation: a randomized controlled trial--results after 4 months of healing.

PURPOSE: To test our null hypothesis stating that the mixture of autogenous cortical bone scrapings and bovine bone mineral (BBM) in a ratio of 1:4, compared with BBM alone, would have no significant effect on new bone formation 4 months after maxillary sinus floor augmentation. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Twenty-four patients presenting with alveolar bone height of less than 5 mm in the narrowest zone between the sinus floor and alveolar crest were randomly assigned to 2 treatment groups in this randomized controlled trial. We augmented 12 maxillary sinuses with a mixture of BBM and cortical autog…

Short-term retrospective analysis of radiographic evaluation of graft height changes after maxillary sinus floor augmentation with xenograft and simultaneous dental implant placement: a two-dimensional radiographic study.

BACKGROUND: Progressive sinus pneumatization, stable sinus graft height and shrinkage of the graft material after maxillary sinus augmentation represent limitations for clinical practice. METHODS: Seventy-eight maxillary sinus floor augmentations and 83 dental implant positions were performed on 60 patients. The lateral window approach was used for maxillary sinus floor augmentation. A collagenated porcine bone xenograft (OsteoBiol® Gen-Os®, Tecnoss®, Giaveno, Italy) and a collagen membrane (OsteoBiol® Evolution, Tecnoss®, Giaveno, Italy) were used as grafting materials. Vertical bone gain wa…

Lateral augmentation of the sinus floor followed by regular implants versus short implants in the vertically deficient posterior maxilla: a systematic review and timewise meta-analysis of randomized studies.

The aim of this study was to perform a timewise meta-analysis of randomized clinical trials (RCTs) comparing the outcomes of short implants (≤6 mm) versus lateral sinus floor augmentation followed by regular implants (≥10 mm) in the deficient posterior maxilla. Eleven RCTs with 1, 3, and 5 years of follow-up were reported in 21 articles. There was no significant difference in the implant loss rate at the patient level after 1 and 3 years between the two groups (risk ratio 0.50, P = 0.17; risk ratio 1.71, P = 0.51). After 5 years, the risk ratio was in favour of regular implants with augmentati…
