Shifts in the skin microbiome associated with diaper dermatitis and emollient treatment amongst infants and toddlers in China.

BACKGROUND: The microbiological basis of diaper dermatitis has not been clearly elucidated; however, a better understanding of microbial colonization may be vital for developing appropriate therapies. METHODS: Using 16S-rRNA gene sequencing technology, we characterized and compared the bacterial communities obtained from the buttock skin sites of children with diaper dermatitis and from healthy controls. Bacterial diversity in the buttock lesion area and subsequent recovery after emollient treatment have been discussed herein. RESULTS: In buttock skin of children with or without diaper derma

Indoor air bacterial communities in Hong Kong households assemble independently of occupant skin microbiomes.

More than in any other habitat, humans exert a large influence on microbial communities indoors. Frequent contact between occupant skin and indoor surfaces causes indoor surface microbial communities to be largely assembled from and thus closely resemble occupant skin microbiomes. While indoor air and dust are known to also contain many human-associated taxa, household air communities have not yet been directly compared with occupant skin microbiomes. We sampled microorganisms from air, surfaces and occupant skin in 19 Hong Kong households and used Illumina sequencing of the V4 hypervariable r

Skin Infection Pathogenicity Associated with a Canine Microbiome Resident: Polygenic Architecture of Virulence Factors in Staphylococcus pseudintermedius.

Staphylococcus pseudintermedius is a common opportunistic pathogen in companion animals and a leading cause of skin and soft tissue infections (SSTIs). Despite its clinical relevance, the genomic determinants underlying pathogenicity and the transition from commensal carriage to invasive infection remain poorly understood. This study aimed to identify the genomic determinants of SSTI pathogenic potential in S. pseudintermedius and to determine whether pathogenicity is driven by single, major-effect virulence genes or by polygenic genome-wide genetic architecture. Using accessory gene-based and

Gut Microbiome Dysbiosis in Atopic Dermatitis: Pathogenic Mechanisms, Gut-Skin Axis Disruption, and Emerging Microbiota-Targeted Therapies.

Atopic dermatitis (AD) is a chronic inflammatory skin disease characterized by epidermal barrier dysfunction, immune dysregulation, and marked clinical heterogeneity. Growing evidence implicates the gut microbiome in AD-related pathways through microbial metabolites, intestinal barrier function, and systemic immune signaling. This narrative review synthesizes current evidence on gut microbial alterations in AD, with particular attention to short-chain fatty acids, tryptophan-derived aryl hydrocarbon receptor ligands, intestinal permeability, gut-skin microbiome interactions, and microbiota-tar

Targeting dysbiosis in psoriasis, atopic dermatitis, and hidradenitis suppurativa: the gut-skin axis and microbiome-directed therapy.

Emerging evidence highlights the gut-skin microbiota as a potential therapeutic target for the management of inflammatory-driven cutaneous diseases as well as the interconnection of the gut-skin microbiota in disease pathogenesis and progression. Although not fully understood, recent research has indicated that commensal microbiota and the interaction of the gut-skin axis play an important role in maintaining skin homeostasis. Dysbiosis and disruption of the skin-gut microbiome may lead to impaired skin barrier function, thus triggering downstream inflammatory responses involved in the develop

Skin-directed Solius UVB light therapy increases vitamin D levels and alters intestinal microbiome and metabolome homeostasis.

The recent global rise in immune and inflammatory diseases, such as psoriasis and inflammatory bowel diseases, has been linked to Western society-based changes in lifestyle and environment. These include decreased exposure to sunlight in the ultraviolet B (UVB) spectrum, leading to impaired production of 25-hydroxyvitamin D. In addition, many of these diseases are linked to dysbiotic changes in gut microbiota composition and function. Clinical overlap between skin and gut diseases, along with growing evidence for a bidirectional "skin-gut axis," supports the concept that exposing the skin to U

Causal association of the skin microbiome with human infertility: insights from a bidirectional two-sample Mendelian randomization.

Infertility is a disorder characterized by the inability to achieve a clinical pregnancy after 12 months of regular and unprotected sexual activity. Affecting 8-12% of the global population, with the continuous progress of microbial research in recent years, a variety of microorganisms may be associated with the onset of infertility. We therefore used a two-sample MR Analysis to investigate the association between skin microbes and infertility. we used preprocessed exposure data to correlate infertility measures (infertility in women, associated with anovulation; Female infertility, cervical i

Distinct anti-microbial peptides expression patterns and microbiome profiles in skin of Tunisian endemic Pemphigus foliaceus patients.

Pemphigus foliaceus (PF) is a multifactorial skin disease. Substantial evidence for microbiota dysbiosis in skin disorders was gradually revealed. In PF patients' skin lesions, we characterized the profile of microbial communities and the expression of microbial peptides. Using real-time reverse transcriptase PCR and immunohistochemistry, skin lesions were analyzed for gene and protein expression of human β-defensin (hBD) 1, 2, and 3, cathelicidin (LL-37), RNAse-7, and psoriasin. Bacterial 16S rRNA gene sequencing was used for assessing skin microbial communities in 15 samples from PF patients

Detection of lumpy skin disease virus reads in the human upper respiratory tract microbiome requires further investigation.

Lumpy skin disease virus (LSDV), a double-stranded DNA virus from the Capripoxvirus genus, primarily affects Bos indicus, Bos taurus breeds, and water buffalo. Arthropod vectors, including mosquitoes and biting flies, are the main LSDV transmitters. Although LSDV is not zoonotic, this study unexpectedly detected LSDV reads in the upper respiratory tract microbiome of humans from rural and urban areas in Maharashtra, India. Nasopharyngeal and oropharyngeal swab samples collected for SARS-CoV-2 surveillance underwent whole-genome metagenomics sequencing, revealing LSDV reads in 25% of samples. S

Sex-dependent effects of mechanical delousing on the skin microbiome of broodstock Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar L.).

Delousing strategies, including mechanical delousing, are typically used to treat Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar) sea lice infestations. In this study, we evaluate the impact of mechanical delousing (Hydrolicer) on the skin bacterial microbiome of broodstock female and male Atlantic salmon. 16S rDNA sequencing of salmon skin microbial communities was performed immediately before delousing, right after delousing and 2 and 13 days post-delousing (dpd). The skin bacterial community of female salmon was more diverse than that of males at the start of the experiment. Overall, hydrolycer caused losses

An insight into the microbiome associated with the damage of raw animal hide and skin-primarily protein, during leather making.

Leather processing is vital for the economy of many developing countries, nevertheless, this industry is faced with issues of leather down-grading owing to its low quality leading to economic loss. In addition to defects due to scratch, wound, scar, etc., the down-grading of hide and skin due to microbial putrefaction is also of concern. The major components of raw hide and skin being proteins, fats and minerals, they act as excellent medium for the growth and proliferation of bacteria, leading to putrefaction. Sometimes the damage is more apparent at pickled and wet-blue stage of leather maki

Eco-evolutionary impact of ultraviolet radiation (UVR) exposure on microorganisms, with a special focus on our skin microbiome.

Sunlight is pivotal for our survival, and daily UV exposure has impacted the evolutionary course of all forms of life, from microorganisms to humans. Deciphering the role of UVR in regulating the microbial dynamics of environmental and host-associated microbes is crucial. UVR may be responsible for affecting skin pathology by influencing the skin microbiome, both qualitatively and quantitatively, as evident in low-dose narrow-band UVB phototherapy. Some findings have suggested that the skin microbiome has immunomodulatory roles when exposed to UVR; however, its involvement in UV screening or p
